Chapter 7: The Abyss District

The cold rising from Valenfort’s depths felt like invisible fingers tightening around their throats. There was no light, only the smell of rust, dried blood, and the ash of buried eras.

Evelyn Cross stepped past a broken sign: THE ABYSS DISTRICT FORBIDDEN ZONE.

Adrian muttered behind her, his voice hoarse: “Good God, we’re walking into the city’s tomb.”

Ahead, Lucien Draven’s silhouette moved slowly once the terror of both worlds. His dark red eyes reflected in the gloom like a ghostly lantern leading them through hell.

Evelyn watched him, her heart a mixture of fresh rage and a trembling something deeper than memory.

“You disappeared for three days, Lucien. Do you know what happened at the chapel?” she asked, her tone sharp but a little shaken.

Lucien did not look back. He answered quietly:

“I know. And I know who ordered the ‘Purge.’ The Black Blood is no longer only a curse, Evelyn. It is a weapon the Guild wants to recreate.”

“They already have,” Adrian cut in. “Dr. Alaric’s cloning bio-soldiers. That blood… it’s no longer natural.”

Lucien stopped. Something dangerous flared in his eyes.

“Black Blood was never natural. It is punishment.”

---

The three of them pressed deeper. The tunnel opened into a vast square ruined building wrapped in red vines like arteries. In the center stood a black stone pillar, so tall it nearly touched the shattered metal dome. Ancient characters were carved along its shaft, both vampire script and human tongue woven together.

When Evelyn laid a hand on the stone, a jolt ran up her wrist and the blood-petal sigil on her arm flared, blazing scarlet.

Lucien moved forward immediately, voice low:

“Don’t touch it! It is the Blood Mark of the Origin.”

“Origin?” Adrian frowned.

Lucien looked at them as if staring into a faraway past.

“Centuries ago, before Valenfort existed, this was the heart of a ritual called the Blood Covenant. Humans and vampires sealed peace with a sacrificial rite. But they made a terrible mistake…”

His voice fell like a stone from the rock itself.

“To secure that peace, they imprisoned a hybrid being the first to bear both lines of blood. They used his blood to forge the seal and split the worlds apart.”

Evelyn felt her pulse hammer.

“A hybrid… the first?”

Lucien nodded, his red eyes like a pre-storm sky.

“His name was Cain Draven. Founder of my bloodline and the one called by the forbidden name, The Abyss King.”

---

A cold ran down Evelyn’s spine. The pillar began to crack; black blood seeped from the fissures like tears.

Adrian raised his gun and stepped back.

“It’s… bleeding?”

Lucien placed a hand on the stone and murmured in an old tongue. The air warped, and for an instant they saw thousands of shackled souls drifting about the pillar, human shapes, vampires, even children.

“This is the price of peace,” Lucien said softly.

“The Abyss is not simply a sealed place, it is the graveyard of the Covenant.”

Evelyn recoiled, feeling something boil under her skin. Her eyes flashed red.

“Why does my blood react to this?”

Lucien looked at her, sorrow heavy in his voice.

“Because you are the descendant of the one who was offered.”

The world seemed to tilt. Evelyn went rigid, unable to speak. Adrian stared at her in disbelief.

“You… you’re descended from the Abyss King?”

Lucien nodded.

“The Black Blood in you is the sign. The Guild knows this. They mean to use you to break the seal and harness the ancient power. But they do not understand that if the seal falls, both worlds will be consumed.”

---

At that moment a deafening explosion ripped through the chamber. The dome shuddered.

Figures in silver armor fell from above Aster Crowe among them, half his face scorched, blue-silver blood leaking.

“I warned you, Evelyn…” he said, voice warped. “You cannot run from the Guild. Dr. Alaric found you, and he will come.”

Lucien stepped forward, eyes flashing.

“You should have died.”

Crowe rasped a laugh.

“Maybe. But I have one last task to get her out of here.”

Evelyn looked at him. There was still a flicker of humanity in his gaze.

“Why help me?”

“Because I don’t want this world to repeat our sin.”

Crowe opened his palm and revealed a shard of black crystal, the broken piece of the seal. The moment it touched the floor, the stone cracked wide, and from the fissure hundreds of black-blooded hands clawed up.

“Run, Eve!” Adrian shouted.

Lucien pulled her toward an escape passage, but Evelyn tore free.

“If we leave, they’ll die! The whole city will be swallowed!”

Lucien bellowed:“I won’t lose you again!”

His eyes flared, and in an instant the air twisted into a tide of blood he summoned the Blood Sovereign’s Authority, the vampire king’s ultimate power. Crimson spirals coiled around the pillar, countering the rising black tide.

The Abyss shook. Crowe planted his sword into the ground, blue-silver blood pooled and merged with the light.

“Go! I’ll hold the seal!”

“Aster!” Evelyn cried, but Lucien shoved her down the passage, forcing her backward into the depths.

In the last moment, Crowe’s eyes met hers not the eyes of an assassin, but of a penitent man.

“Don’t let them repeat this… Evelyn.”

A torrent of light detonated. Everything was swallowed by blinding white.

---

When Evelyn woke, she lay in a shabby room. Outside, the wind howled and alarms echoed across Valenfort. Lucien sat by the window; his red eyes darker than before.

“The seal didn’t break… but it cracked. The Abyss is stirring,” he said.

Evelyn clenched her fist, the black-blood sigil on her skin still smoldered.

“If they want war… I’ll show them what true hell looks like.”

Lucien turned to her, pain and a cold resolve gleaming in his face.

“And this time… I will walk into it with you.”
