Chapter 8: The New Blood Pact

The rain fell without mercy, as if trying to wash something away from Valenfort. Forked lightning ripped the night, reflecting off the hundreds of iron-and-steel buildings that shuddered under emergency alarms. Newsfeeds lit up across the city: a mysterious explosion in the northern suburbs, suspected involvement of a pureblood vampire.

Evelyn stood at the window of the ruined house, watching distant red lights blink like predator eyes.

Outside, Lucien, coat plastered to his shoulders, hair soaked, talked with a group of strangers. They weren’t Guild agents and they weren’t purebloods, just survivors rejected by both worlds.

“These people…” Evelyn said softly as she stepped out. “Are you sure they’re trustworthy?”

Lucien looked at her, his gaze cold and deep. “No one in this world is truly trustworthy, not even me. But they want to live. That’s the only reason I need them.”

A bearded man nearby inclined his head. “My name is Kael. Ex-Guild operative until they killed my wife for helping vampires escape. Now I owe the Blood King a life.”

Lucien turned to Evelyn. “Kael will lead the outlaw human faction. I will gather the rebel vampires.”

“You intend to do what both worlds call heresy,” Evelyn said, her voice roughening. “A new blood covenant.”

Lucien answered with a faint smile, eyes touched by an ancient sorrow. “Peace is not granted. It is taken with blood.”

That night they held their first meeting in a cellar beneath an abandoned theater, a place left to rot since the Great Massacre. Weak lights threw shadows across the faces of those fate had crushed.

To the left sat rebel vampires hunted by the Guild led by Selene Vahl, silver-eyed and once Lucien’s guard.

To the right were outcast humans: thieves, arms runners, defected agents. They looked at one another with hatred, fear, and distrust.

Evelyn stepped to the center; her voice rang through the thick air. “You may hate one another. You may have killed one another. But without an alliance, we will all be wiped out. The Guild is creating synthetic blood weapons that can annihilate both species.”

The murmurs died. Eyes fixed on her. Lucien stepped forward, his voice low and river-strong. “They forgot that we, humans or vampires were born from the same blood. And blood… cannot be tamed.”

Selene drew a silver blade and nicked her palm. Her blood fell to the floor, the red flare like an oath. “If this is the only way to survive… then I, Selene Vahl, swear under the New Blood Pact.”

Kael followed, letting his blood mix into the red pool. One by one, hesitant or furious, each person bled into the circle, forming a living ring that beat in time with Valenfort’s heart beyond the walls.

Lucien placed his sword at the center. “From this night, beneath blood and shadow, we form The Crimson Pact, the New Blood Pact. Once our blood is joined, no Guild, no god, no one can divide us.”

Light flared and a black-blood seal was imprinted on the floor, the mark of the pact, twin wings of inked blood.

After the ceremony, Evelyn and Lucien lingered on the old stage where tattered curtains fluttered in the draft.

She looked at him and murmured, “You know the Guild won’t sit idle. Alaric is sure to be watching.”

Lucien considered, quiet. “He will come. He always knows where I am. But now it isn’t only me he’ll have to face those he once called refuse.”

“Will you strike first?” she asked.

“No,” Lucien replied, eyes on the bright roofs outside. “I will let him come to us. When Valenfort begins to bleed, the Guild will have to show itself.”

Evelyn leaned against the wall, breath heavy. “You aren’t afraid? We’re building another nightmare.”

Lucien smiled, a sadness older than the city touching it. “I’ve lived long enough to know peace is a short dream between wars.”

She was silent. Outside, the rain tapped on the tin roof, a staccato like blood drops.

Three days later.

The Hunters launched Operation Sanctum, sweeping the entire southern district claimed to be vampire hideouts.

News channels ran rolling footage labeling the “Crimson Pact” a terrorist organization, accusing it of inciting unrest and practicing forbidden blood sorcery.

Beneath the city, Evelyn and Lucien stood over a holographic map. Red dots marked Guild outposts.

Kael pointed to the center of the map the Astra Research Institute, Dr. Alaric’s headquarters. “This is the synthetic-blood hub. Take it down and the Guild loses its weapon supply.”

Selene added, “It’s protected by plasma fences and hundreds of elite troops.”

Evelyn scanned the room and said with resolve, “We don’t need to destroy it. We need to steal what they’re developing.”

Lucien tilted his head. “Do you have a plan?”

She smiled, a dangerous gleam in her eyes. “I was a senior operative of the Guild. I know how to breach it. But I’ll need a distraction something only you can be.”

Lucien arched an eyebrow. “A king as bait? Bold, Evelyn Cross.”

“Want to end this cycle? Hit the Guild where it hurts and break its heart.”

He was silent for a moment, then laughed softly, a smile tasting of doom. “Very well. Show them that the New Blood Pact is not mere words.”

When dawn’s first light slit over Valenfort, small teams of the Crimson Pact moved into position. Evelyn looked up at the pewter sky, feeling an odd mix of fear and calm.

In the shadows, Lucien came close and placed a cold hand on her shoulder. “When this ends, what do you want?”

Evelyn met his eyes the same abyssal eyes from the night they first met, both void and salvation. “I want freedom. Not a hunter, not a tool, not a monster. Just… me.”

Lucien leaned down, his voice equal parts curse and promise. “Then, Evelyn Cross… I will give you that world, even if I must burn Valenfort to ash.”
