The car smelled like gunpowder and rain.

Zara’s hands wouldn’t stop shaking.

The folder was in her lap.

38 hours left.

POV: ZARA

Damien was driving.

Marcus was in the passenger seat, gun ready, watching the rearview.

And she was in the back.

Alone.

No one spoke.

Not until they were inside the penthouse.

Doors locked.

Guards at every entrance.

Then it hit her.

She threw up in the bathroom.

Nothing came out.

Just fear.

Damien knocked.

The house didn’t feel like home anymore. The blue torches flickered. The walls were cold. And sometimes, in the corner of her eye, Lyra saw movement.“Did you see that?” she asked Kael.He nodded, sword already in hand.“It’s here.”The curse was inside House Virel. And it wanted the babies.DAY 1 OF THE HUNTThe Keepers drew lines.Salt. Blood. Virel sigils.Around the nursery. Around the heart room.Around Lyra.“It won’t cross,” the oldest Keeper said.“But it will try,” Kael finished.Kael didn’t leave the nursery. Not to eat.Not to sleep. He sat in the chair with a sword across his lap.Lyra tried to make him rest.“I’m fine,” he said. “They’re not.”Rowan cried.Baby Lyra screamed.Normal baby things. But every time they did, the torches dimmed.DAY 3First attack.Lyra was feeding Baby Lyra.Kael was changing Rowan. The temperature dropped.Frost crawled up the window.“Kael,” Lyra whispered. The shadow formed in the corner. No face.Just Lord Virel’s coat.It didn’t speak. It

  • BLOODLINE SWAP   CHAPTER 18: THE CRACK

The crack was thin.Like a hairline.Running from the top of the crystal to the center. But it was glowing.Red. Not blue.Kael stared at it. “How long?”“Since dawn,” the Keeper said. “It grows when she feeds. When she sleeps. When she breathes.”Lyra was still in bed.Rowan and Baby Lyra on her chest. She didn’t know yet.Kael didn’t tell her.Not today.DAY 1The nursery was chaos and peace at the same time.Crying. Feeding. Diapers.Kael was terrible at all of it and kept doing it anyway.Mira showed him how to swaddle. He tied Rowan too tight.Untied him.Tried again.“Let me,” Lyra laughed.“I’ve got it,” Kael said. Determined.Rowan stopped crying.Kael looked like he’d won a war.Baby Lyra screamed instead.Kael handed her to Lyra. “Tag in.”They figured it out. Slowly. At night, Kael slept 2 hours.Sat in the chair the rest of the time. Watching. The crack in the crystal grew 1 inch.DAY 3Visitors.Servants. Guards. Even the cook.Everyone wanted to see the twins.Lyra was e

    It started as a cramp.Lyra rolled over in bed. 3am.“Kael,” she whispered.He was awake instantly.“What is it?”“Just a cramp. I think.”He put his hand on her stomach.Hard.“Braxton Hicks?”“Maybe.”They waited.Ten minutes.Nothing.Kael exhaled.“Okay. Back to sleep.”She nodded.Closed her eyes.Five minutes later—Clench.This time it took her breath.“Kael.”He was already sitting up.“How bad? One to ten?”“Four? Maybe five.”He swung out of bed.Bare feet.No shirt.“I’m getting Mira.”“Kael, it’s probably nothing—”“I don't care.”He was back with Mira in three minutes.The nurse checked her.Felt her stomach.Listened.“Not labor,” Mira said.“But close. Could be days. Could be hours.”Lyra groaned.“You're joking.”“I wish.”Kael didn't leave the room after that.DAWNThe contractions kept coming.Irregular.Twenty minutes apart.Then fifteen.Then thirty.Lyra tried to eat.Threw it up.Tried to walk.Had to stop halfway.Kael carried her to the nursery.Set her on the f

  • BLOODLINE SWAP   CHAPTER 16: THE NURSERY

It took three days to clean Kael’s brother’s room.Three days of dust, old toys, and memories Kael wouldn’t talk about.Lyra didn’t push. She just painted.White walls. Blue trim. She couldn’t stand for long. So Kael held the ladder and she sat on a stool.“You don’t have to do this,” he said. “I want to,” Lyra answered. “They deserve a room that’s loved.”On day 3, the last wall dried. Kael carried in the crib. Hand-carved. Virel oak.It was too big for one baby. Perfect for two.Lyra ran her hand over the wood. “Rowan and Lyra Virel.” Kael came up behind her. Arms around her waist. “Fits.”The babies kicked. Like agreement.THE SHOPPING TRIP“You can’t go,” Kael said. “I can walk,” Lyra argued. “To the market. In your condition.” “My condition is bored.”He sighed. “Fine. But I’m carrying everything. And you. If you get tired.”The market was loud. Too loud. People stared. Whispered. “That’s the new Lady Virel.” “She’s huge.”Lyra ignored them. She touched everything. Tiny

  • BLOODLINE SWAP   CHAPTER 15: THE FIRST KICK

The penthouse was too quiet at 5AM. Like everyone was holding their breath. Zara was awake. Again. Hand on her stomach. Ring back on her finger. POV: ZARA She hadn’t told anyone about the email. About Dr. Amina. About the folder. And now this. A flutter. Low. Like bubbles. Then again. The twins were moving. "Hey," she whispered to no one. "Hey you two." Tears came. Stupid. She was married to one man. In love with another. And pregnant with maybe both. A knock. Soft. "Zara?" Damien. "Come in." He stood in the doorway. Hair messy. Eyes tired. "You okay?" "I felt them." Damien froze. "What?" "They kicked. Just now." Damien crossed the room in 2 steps. Stopped. Hand hovering over her stomach. "Can I?" Zara nodded. His hand was warm. Big. Still. Nothing for 10 seconds. Then another flutter. Damien’s eyes widened. "I felt that." Zara laughed. Watery. "Me too." F

  • BLOODLINE SWAP   CHAPTER 14: THE WEDDING

The safe house smelled like coffee and fear. No windows. One door. Three people. And a lie that had to look real. POV: ZARA She hadn’t slept. Not with Damien on the floor. Not with Marcus outside. 35 hours left. Till the results. Till Obasi moved. Till her life stopped being hers. "Legal sent the papers," Damien said. Voice rough. "Courthouse. 9AM." Zara nodded. "Okay." "Are you sure?" "No. But I’m doing it anyway." Damien didn’t push. He just handed her a cup of coffee. Black. The way she drank it. POV: MARCUS He came in at 6AM. Wet. Tired. Gun still on him. He didn’t look at Zara. Didn’t look at Damien. Just went to the sink. Washed his face. "They’re backing off," he said. "For now." "Good," Damien said. Marcus finally looked up. At Zara. In a white blouse. Hair down. No makeup. She looked like she was going to a funeral. POV: ZARA The courthouse was small. Cold. 5 people i
