The gates slammed shut behind them with a heavy clang.

The sound echoed through the trees like a final warning.

Lena didn’t look back.

The iron doors of the enclave were already sealed again, cutting her off from the only home she had ever known. Cold wind rushed through the forest ahead, carrying the smell of damp earth and wild things that didn’t care about clan laws.

Kai’s grip stayed firm on her arm as he pulled her down the narrow path.

“Walk.”

His voice was low and controlled.

Lena yanked her arm free.

“I am walking.”

For a moment they stood there, facing each other in the dim forest light.

Inside the walls, Kai had looked untouchable. A commander surrounded by guards, power, and authority.

Out here, something about him felt different.

More dangerous.

More alone.

The silence stretched between them.

Then Lena spoke first.

“You knew.”

Kai didn’t react.

“You knew they were going to do this,” she continued, her voice tight. “You knew the council wanted me dead.”

He watched her for a long moment before answering.

“I suspected.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“No,” Kai agreed calmly. “It isn’t.”

Frustration burned through her chest.

“You forced them to give me a trial,” she said. “Why bother if they were just going to throw me out here to die?”

Kai started walking again.

Lena hesitated, then followed. The forest path twisted between thick trees and broken roots. Every shadow looked like something waiting to jump.

“Because,” Kai said finally, “a public trial meant witnesses.”

She frowned.

“And?”

“And witnesses ask questions.”

Lena processed that slowly.

“So you weren’t trying to save me,” she said.

Kai didn’t answer right away.

They walked deeper into the forest. The sounds of the village were gone now. Only wind and rustling branches filled the air.

Finally he said, “If I wanted you dead, Lena, you wouldn’t have made it past the square.”

The blunt honesty in his voice made her chest tighten.

They walked another few minutes in silence.

The deeper they went, the darker the forest became.

Then Lena stopped.

“Wait.”

Kai turned.

“What?”

“You said something back there,” she said. “When the council changed the sentence.”

His expression didn’t shift.

“You told them they were afraid of what I might reveal.”

Kai studied her carefully.

“So you did see something.”

It wasn’t a question.

Lena folded her arms.

“I saw a memory.”

His eyes sharpened.

“Whose?”

“One of the warriors,” she said. “The one with the curved blade.”

Kai’s jaw tightened slightly.

“What memory?”

Lena hesitated.

The image flashed through her mind again.

Stone walls. A torch. Three elders.

And that voice.

The girl must not leave the trial alive.

“They were talking about the trial,” she said slowly. “Before it even happened.”

Kai didn’t look surprised.

“They were planning it.”

That made Lena’s stomach twist.

“You already knew.”

Kai exhaled slowly.

“I know how the council works.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“No,” he said quietly. “It isn’t.”

Lena stared at him.

“You’re not shocked.”

“Should I be?”

“They were planning to murder someone in front of the entire clan.”

Kai met her gaze.

“They’ve done worse.”

The words landed heavily between them.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Then Lena asked the question burning in her mind.

“Why didn’t you expose them?”

Kai let out a short breath.

“Because accusing an elder without proof is treason.”

“You had proof.”

“You had a memory,” he corrected.

“That’s the same thing.”

“To you,” he said.

His voice stayed calm, but there was something sharp underneath it now.

“To the council, it’s the word of a newly awakened Echo who can’t control her power.”

Lena opened her mouth.

Then closed it again.

Because he was right.

Kai turned and continued down the path.

“Come on.”

Lena followed reluctantly.

The forest grew thicker the farther they walked. The air felt colder now. Strange animal cries echoed somewhere in the distance.

After a while, Lena spoke again.

“You knew this would happen, didn’t you?”

Kai didn’t turn.

“Knew what?”

“That the council wasn’t done with me.”

For a moment, only the wind moved through the trees.

Then Kai slowed.

“You’re an Echo,” he said.

“I’m starting to hate that word.”

“The council spent generations teaching the clan that Echoes are monsters.”

Lena let out a dry laugh.

“Yeah. I noticed.”

Kai stopped walking.

Slowly, he turned to face her.

“But monsters can be useful,” he said calmly.

A chill crept down Lena’s spine.

“What does that mean?”

Kai stepped a little closer, lowering his voice.

“Power like yours isn’t something rulers destroy.”

Lena’s stomach tightened.

“They control it.”

The truth hit her hard.

“They didn’t exile me to get rid of me.”

Kai didn’t answer.

Which told her everything.

“They’re going to hunt me,” she said quietly.

“They will.”

Her throat felt tight.

“And you’ll be leading the hunt.”

Kai shrugged slightly.

“That’s what they believe.”

Lena studied his face carefully.

“You’re not denying it.”

Kai shrugged slightly.

“I follow orders.”

Anger flared inside her.

“Then why bring me out here yourself?”

Kai held her gaze for a long moment.

Then he said quietly,

“Because if anyone else had escorted you…”

He glanced toward the dark forest behind them.

“You’d already be dead.”

The honesty in his voice silenced her.

Kai stepped back.

“We’re close enough.”

“Close enough to what?”

“The border.”

Lena followed his gaze.

Beyond the ridge ahead, the clan’s territory ended.

After that…

nothing but wilderness.

“You’re just leaving me here?” she asked.

“That was the sentence.”

The words landed like a blow.

For a moment she didn’t move.

Then she lifted her chin.

“Fine.”

Kai watched her carefully.

“Stay alive.”

She scoffed.

“That’s easy for you to say.”

“No,” he said quietly.

“It isn’t.”

Lena frowned.

Kai glanced toward the deeper forest.

Then he looked back at her.

“The forest might actually be safer than the clan right now.”

Her brows pulled together.

“That makes zero sense.”

Kai didn’t argue.

“The council will come for you,” he said simply.

“Hunters. Rogues. Anyone they can use.”

The weight of those words settled in Lena’s chest.

“So this was never exile,” she said.

“It was a hunt.”

Kai didn’t deny it.

Silence stretched between them.

Finally he turned away.

“This is where I go back.”

Lena watched him start walking.

“Commander.”

He paused.

But he didn’t look at her.

After a moment he said quietly,

“Don’t trust anyone you meet out here.”

“Why?”

Kai finally glanced over his shoulder.

His expression was unreadable.

“Because out here,” he said, “the clan’s rules don’t apply.”

Then he faced forward again.

“And survival belongs to whoever is strong enough to take it.”

Kai disappeared into the trees.

Gone.

Just like that.

Lena stood there alone.

Too quiet.

She rubbed the mark on her wrist.

The Echo stirred beneath her skin.

Then it flared.

Pain shot through her wrist, sharp enough to steal the breath from her lungs.

Lena gasped.

And suddenly…

something crashed into her senses.

A feeling.

Cold and violent

The emotions weren’t hers. She knew that instantly. They poured into her mind like freezing water.

Hunger.

Bloodlust.

Lena grabbed her wrist, trying to steady herself.

The Echo pulsed harder.

Like the woods were holding their breath.

“Kai?” she called.

No answer.

Only the wind slipping through the trees.

Snap.

A branch cracked behind her.

Lena froze.

Slowly, she turned.

Dark trees stared back at her.

Empty.

Then the Echo burned again.

Stronger.

Her heart began to pound.

Footsteps.

Heavy and careful.

Not one.

Several.

Shapes moved between the trees, barely visible in the darkness.

Closing in.

Lena stepped back.

The leaves crunched under her shoe.

The footsteps stopped.

Silence fell over the forest.

Then a voice came from the darkness behind her.

Low and satisfied.

“There you are.”

The forest was too quiet.Kai noticed it the moment he crossed the outer ridge. No birds. No wind in the leaves. Even the insects seemed to have gone silent.Bad sign.He slowed his pace slightly, eyes scanning the trees.Behind him, the rest of the hunting party moved through the dark forest in a loose formation. Six trackers in total. Skilled. Fast. Loyal to the council. At least on the surface.Kai didn’t bother looking back at them.“Tracks were last seen near the lower valley,” one of the men said quietly from behind him.Kai nodded once.“I know.”Of course he knew.He had been the one who escorted Lena to the border. The memory flashed through his mind before he could stop it.Her standing there at the edge of the forest.Alone.Trying not to show fear.Stay alive. He had told her that. Now the council wanted her dead.Kai pushed the thought away and kept walking.A few minutes passed in silence before one of the trackers spoke again.“You think she made it this far?”Kai didn’

Something not entirely human. The thought still hung in Lena’s mind when the man suddenly grabbed her arm.“Move.”His voice was low but sharp.Lena barely had time to react before he pulled her toward the trees.“What…”“Quiet.”Another howl ripped through the forest.Closer now.Much closer. The sound crawled down Lena’s spine. She stumbled as he dragged her forward, branches scratching her arms as they pushed through the dark undergrowth.“Are they coming here?” she whispered.“They’re already here.”That answer did nothing to calm her. They moved fast through the trees. The stranger walked like he knew every inch of the forest. Lena had to half-run to keep up with him.Her ribs protested with every step.“Slow down,” she muttered. He didn’t.“Then keep up.”Easy for him to say.A snap of twigs echoed somewhere behind them.Lena turned her head instinctively. The stranger’s grip tightened.“Don’t look back.”“Why?”“Because if you see them,” he said calmly, “you’ll panic.”Her stom

Lena stared at him.Her chest still rose and fell too fast. Her ribs ached where the rogue had kicked her. Dirt clung to her hands.Three bodies lay scattered across the clearing.Dead. Just like that. The man who had killed them stood calmly among them as if none of it mattered. He slid the blade into its sheath with an easy motion.Only then did Lena find her voice.“What did you mean?”His green eyes shifted to her.Sharp. Assessing.“What?”“That.” Lena swallowed. “What you said.”He didn’t answer immediately.Instead, he walked toward one of the fallen rogues and nudged the body with his boot, checking it like someone making sure a job was finished. Then he looked back at her.“You’re still alive,” he said.“That wasn’t the question.”A faint smile touched the corner of his mouth.“You’ve got nerve,” he said.Lena pushed herself to her feet. Her legs shook, but she forced herself to stand straight.“You called me a weapon.”The man studied her for a moment. Then his gaze dropped

Lena ran.Behind her, something howled in the forest. The forest swallowed her almost immediately.Branches whipped her face. Roots caught her boots. Cold air tore through her lungs as she pushed deeper into the trees.Run.That was all she could do now.Her legs burned. Her lungs burned worse. But she kept moving.Deeper.Farther.The ground sloped downward and the path vanished.Trees crowded closer, choking out most of the moonlight.Lena finally slowed, stumbling into a small clearing. She bent over, hands on her knees, dragging air into her chest.Silence pressed in around her.Too quiet. Her wrist throbbed under the cloth wrapped around it.The golden line beneath the band pulsed faintly. The Echo.It was calm now… but not gone.It felt restless.Like something was watching.Lena straightened slowly. Then…a twig snapped.Lena froze. Her heart skipped once.Another sound followed.Closer.Slow footsteps moved between the trees.Shadows shifted in the dark.Lena turned slowly.Th

And somewhere in the crowd…someone moved.Lena didn’t see who it was.But she felt it.A sudden ripple of intent cut through the storm of emotions flooding her mind.Fear. Curiosity. Excitement. All of it pressed against her senses at once. Her head throbbed. The golden mark on her wrist burned hotter.Across from her, the two remaining warriors hesitated. The one with the curved blade shifted his stance.“Commander,” he called uneasily, glancing at Kai. “What do we do?”Kai didn’t answer. His gaze was still scanning the crowd.Calculating and searching. The spearman stepped forward again, clearly trying to regain control of the moment.“It doesn’t matter what killed him,” he said loudly, gesturing at the fallen warrior. “The trial continues.”A few people in the crowd nodded.Others still looked nervous. The curved blade warrior swallowed but stepped forward beside the spearman. Two against one.Again.Lena’s heart slammed harder. Her vision blurred for a second. The noise inside he
