Ava
Hot tears welled up in my eyes as the door slammed shut, the echo of my mother’s scorn still ringing in my ears. "You’re a disgrace," she’d said, her words like knives carving into the fragile shell of my pride. "You’ll never run with the pack. You’ll always hide indoors, just like you always do.”
It was the full moon tonight—a night that called every wolf to the run, to revel in their strength and unity. Every wolf but me.
The tears I’d fought so hard to contain now spilled freely, streaking my cheeks as I collapsed onto the edge of my bed.
My eyes, already swollen from the countless nights I’d cried, burned with fresh grief. Was it my fault that I was born prematurely , Was it my fault that my spine twisted as it did, or that I couldn’t shift when others did .
I remembered my father’s stories about my mother when I was younger, how she was the pride of the pack. She had admirers, wolves who envied the one destined to be her mate.
My father had beamed with pride when he discovered she was his. But when I was born—early, weak, and deformed—it was as if all that pride turned to ash.
The pack had mocked her, whispering that she was cursed, that she had birthed a runt. Her friends turned their backs, and the males who had once desired her gloated that fate had spared them.
Desperate to restore her reputation, she bore three healthy, strong sons. It was proof that she wasn’t to blame—that I, Ava, was the problem.
And so, she hid me. If the pack could forget I existed, maybe she could reclaim her place among them.
My presence was a reminder of her shame, a scar she couldn’t erase. She didn’t hit me or scream all the time; she simply ignored me, her silence louder than any words.
My brothers, Joshua and Paul, followed her lead, pretending I didn’t exist. But Blake... Blake was different. Blake saw me.
He was my lifeline, the only reason I hadn’t ended it all when the darkness became too much to bear.
A soft knock interrupted my spiral of despair. Blake slipped into my room, closing the door quietly behind him.
He held a finger to his lips, signaling for silence as he tiptoed inside, his playful grin softening the ache in my chest.
Blake pulled out a pen and paper, scribbling quickly before sliding the note to me. “The pack is running to the east side of the mountain tonight.”
“You can go to the west side for a quick run. Just be back before we return.”
Hope flickered in my chest, but fear snuffed it out just as quickly. "What if I get caught?" I whispered, my voice trembling.
Blake took the paper back and wrote: “Ava, you need to let your wolf out. You’ve only shifted once, and if you keep suppressing her, she could leave you. I asked my wolf about it, and he said the same thing.”
My heart clenched. Losing my wolf? Could things get any worse? She was more daring, more resilient than I ever could be.
But she’d told me once, in her quiet, steady voice, You don’t need to be fixed. You just need to trust me.
Trust. It felt impossible. But Blake was right. If I didn’t shift tonight, I might never get another chance. So, I nodded, took the pen, and scribbled back: “I’ll go. But just for an hour.”
Blake’s smile lit up his face as he kissed my cheek. Nervousness churned in my stomach as I waited for the pack to leave.
Finally, the sound of paws pounding the earth signaled that the run had begun. I slipped out and darted toward the west wing of the woods, my heart hammering in my chest.
The moment my wolf took over, everything changed. She ran, her paws pounding the earth as the moon bathed us in silver light.
For the first time in months, I felt alive, free. She stretched her limbs, reveling in the freedom she’d been denied for so long, until we finally collapsed under the glow of the full moon.
“Ava. Her voice whispered through my mind, gentle yet firm. Don’t block me out. We’re special. That’s why they treat us this way. You’ll see. Soon.”
I wanted to argue, to cry out against her optimism, but then a sound shattered the peace—a low, steady rumble of paws against the earth.
My breath hitched as a massive black wolf emerged from the shadows, its golden eyes locking onto mine.
In one powerful leap, it landed in front of me, and my wolf cursed under her breath. I almost laughed, but then his scent hit me like a tidal wave.
"Derek."
Panic surged. Why was he here? Was the pack coming this way?
Before I could move, Derek shifted back into his human form, standing tall and unashamed in his nakedness.
He pulled on a pair of shorts and crossed his arms, his piercing gaze fixed on me. "What are you doing here?”
"I... I..." I stammered, trying to find my voice. "My wolf wanted to run. I snuck out. Are the others here?”
He sighed heavily, frustration etched into his face. "No. But you shouldn’t be here. Do you even know what happens on the full moon?”
Confusion must have shown on my face because he sighed again, stepping closer. "On the full moon, wolves are either hunting or mating," he said bluntly.
"And my wolf..." His voice dropped, his gaze darkening. "It scented you. It wants to claim you. To make you mine.”
He leaned in, his breath hot against my skin as he sniffed my hair. My body betrayed me, shivering under his touch. "But don’t push your luck," he said coldly. "My body might want you, but it can never have you. We can never mate.”
Then, with a voice like steel, he said the words that broke me: "I, Derek Blackthorn, reject you, Ava Silverclaw, as my mate.”
The pain was a dagger to my heart, but I swallowed my tears, refusing to let him see me break. Summoning all my courage, I looked him in the eye and said, "I, Ava Silverclaw, reject you, Derek Blackthorn, as my mate.”
Shock flashed across his face. He hadn’t expected me to reject him, not without prompting.
"This isn’t right," he muttered, pacing in frustration. "The mate bond should’ve broken by now.”
In a fit of rage, he shifted back into his wolf form and disappeared into the forest,
leaving me alone under the moon, fighting back tears as his scent lingered in the air.
AVASEVERAL YEARS LATER " Luna, where would you like these ? "I turned to see a male wolf standing holding two large bowls in his hands. "They're over on the food table, thank you. " He smiled at me and scurried off. Tomorrow is the kids' eighteenth birthdays. Tonight we planned a family meal , just us and them. We needed to come clean about a secret we had kept their whole lives. At midnight tonight , they will get their wolves and their magic back. They would also realise what pack members had speculated and teased them about their whole lives. That they were in fact mates. We thought telling them that part would be the easy part. The kids were left with most of their bond. But for two of our lovely children , I fear the news will come to them like a nightmare. Leo and Lena had been forever inseparable , to the point I had to kick him out of her room most nights still. They wished to be mates , hoped for it and had even gone as far as saying if they weren't they would reject their f
It started with a low current , flowing through one hand around my body and out the other. It felt like a pulse , the power of it getting stronger with time it passed through me.The low breeze that had flowed around us became a strong wind wiping through our hair and clothes. But the leaves kept floating through it all. My eyes were focused on the babies. Making sure they were OK , at one sign they weren't, I would break this link with no issues. But they seemed fine. When the leaves dropped from floating and the babies' eyes turned back to their usual colors, I knew that their magic was gone for now. Locked away until they turned eighteen. The girls didn't stop. Their chant turned to a different one. The pulsing feeling kept going , but this time the babies started getting a little upset. I looked at Derek, who looked like he wanted to go to them and I knew how he was feeling hearing them cry was not sitting well with me. But as he went to move forward , Ava pulled him back and shoo
ONE MONTH AFTER BIRTH . . . ." Ava, can you throw me the lotion please ? " I asked, turning towards her. She was dressing Keon and Kesha her son and my daughter at the other side of the room. While I was dressing Leo and Lena , my son and her daughter. It was pretty obvious from the get go who was mated to who. That first night of the babies being born , they wouldn't settle to sleep until Adrian threw out the idea of testing who was mated to who. We had laid them brother to sister and they hadn't been happy with that. Since then, they have only been happy being beside each other. Before Ava had the chance to throw me the lotion, it started floating through the air to me. Ava looked at the babies she had , and I looked at mine. Shaking my head and smiling at Leo.You could tell which baby was using magic. For some reason, we didn't know their eyes would turn white when they were using their gifts . " Leo stop being a show off ", I smiled at him . I went to lotion him first and he sta
The council stayed for two days , they met everyone in the pack. They stayed and caught up with the Derek dad and got to know Derek and Ava. They even offered us to be on the council but we all respectfully declined. But we agreed to help them if we were needed and Ava and Derek agreed to visit the council to discuss how Ava would be helping them too. They wanted us to be close with the council and after getting to know the three of them , we were happy with that. They were actually really nice, it just goes to show one rotten egg could rot a whole dozen. We still kept our children's future to ourselves though. All seemed to be well and good for now , but seeing it take action would be another thing. When they finally left and we got into our quadruple bed , we were all drained. It seemed coming down from the high of so much adrenaline we had been running on caused everyone involved to crash." Well , that actually resolved itself easily " I laughed, still not believing it. " Don't ji
ADRIAN The council had just been let through at the borders , after a meeting this morning and sharing what had happened with the moon goddess. We had all decided to keep what our babies were to be a secret. No one but our closest people could know. Muting their magic and the fact they were mates was the only way forward. That was clear now. Me and Ava didn't like it , we understood their magic being muted. But their mating , we can feel their bond already. It was beautiful , and to keep that from them. Well , it just felt wrong. But if it was what was needed to protect them , then that is what we would do.All of the new members were gathered , Derek wanted them on and off of our land as soon as possible. All the newcomers from the island , and the others that had joined too. Even the panthers were there. Even though Derek had done the decent thing and not made them a part of this pack , they kept their own pride. They had their leader and we were allies. He decided to have them her
After a few more minutes and the doctor taking some pictures of them , he pulled the little thing off of Ava's belly and cleaned it. He handed Derek some paper to clean the gel he had put on her belly off too. He gently wiped it off and then helped her up. Pulling her into a tight hug. They then got pulled into more hugs by their parents. After that, Ava' mum and dad left , to give me privacy. Ava' mum was clutching one of the pictures on her chest. The difference in her was outstanding to what I had seen when I met her." Are you ready Vee ? "the doctor asked me. My heart started hammering in my chest. Adrian grabbed my hand and squeezed it for support. Looking at Ava, she looked a little nervous now too. This could possibly prove the theory right. " Yes I'm ready " the doctor looked a little confused by the mood in the room. He didn't know what this could mean. Going to the table , Adrian helped me slowly lay down and then he lifted my shirt up for me. " The gel will be a little col
