POV: LUCIAN

The door clicked shut behind her, and I stood frozen right there in the middle of my room like some idiot who had forgotten how to move.

Her scent still filled the air. Warm and complex, wrapping around me in a way that made my wolf sit up and snarl for more. I did not breathe for a long second. My jaw locked tight. My hands curled into fists so hard the knuckles ached.

Seven fucking years. Seven years since anything hit me this hard.

she smelt.. not like Lysandra. Not exactly the same. But close enough to tear open every scar I had stitched shut with pure rage and stubborn will.

I could still picture Nyx standing there in that scrap of ivory lingerie. Shoulders back, chin up, refusing to shrink even an inch. Those full curves and breasts on full display, skin flushed hot, eyes locked on mine with fear flickering behind the cold wall she tried to hide behind. She looked ready to fight the whole damn world rather than apologize for existing.

My wolf lunged hard toward the door. Wanting to track her scent down the hall. Wanting her. The pull felt sharp and specific, nothing like the cold plan I had laid out. I slammed it back down with every bit of Alpha control I had forged since I was seventeen.

"Enough," I growled under my breath.

The word came out rough. More animal than man. I hated the sound of it.

I crossed the room and dropped into the chair at my desk. Her file waited there. Thin black folder with her name printed neat on the tab.

Nyx.

I flipped it open. Stared at the first page without really seeing the words.

She smelled like courage wrapped tight around terror. The exact way Lysandra used to mask her fear behind steel and quiet strength. Same tilt of the chin. Same refusal to break even when everything around her was already shattered.

And my body had cataloged every damn detail before my brain could stop it. The way that lingerie clung to her. The soft rise of her breasts with every careful breath. The small cut on her lower lip that made something dark and hungry twist low in my gut.

I slammed the file shut.

She killed the woman you loved.

The thought sliced through me clean and cold. The same reminder I had repeated like a prayer every single day for seven years.

I opened the file again. My eyes landed on the drawing of her clipped inside. Sharp features. Dark wavy hair. Eyes staring straight like she dared whoever took it to try her.

My wolf whined low in my chest and pushed again. Harder this time.

I shoved it back down with everything I had. The same iron control that had kept me breathing when grief tried to swallow me whole.

I could still feel the heat of her body from when I had pulled her close earlier. She had not flinched away. Not really. She just met my stare like she would burn right along with me if that was what it took.

I hated how badly I wanted to test that fire.

"She's here for one reason," I said out loud. My voice came out flat and precise. The voice I used when I needed to remind myself who the fuck I was. "She killed Lysandra. Everything else is noise. She suffers. Then she ends."

The words tasted like ash in my mouth.

My wolf did not give a damn about my rules. It wanted her scent again. Wanted to follow it down the hall. Wanted to know exactly how that warmth would feel pressed tight against my chest.

I shoved up from the chair fast. The legs scraped loud against the floor.

I paced across the room once. Stopped and paced back.

That image of her in the lingerie flashed again. Uninvited. The defiant set of her mouth. The way her body curved under that thin fabric. The slight cut on her lip that made me want lean down and kiss it.

I stopped at the desk. Snapped the file closed.

Opened it again.

Closed it.

"Fuck."

I walked over to the tall window and stared out into the night. The estate grounds lay dark and quiet below. Moonlight cut silver across the trees. Somewhere out there she was walking back to whatever room they had put her in.

I kept staring into the black.

Her name sat heavy on my tongue. Unwanted and dangerous.

I said it anyway. Quiet. Just once.

"Nyx."

It settled in my mouth like it belonged there. Like it had been waiting years to be spoken out loud.

Rage flooded through me hot and fast.

I was already losing the war I had declared the second she stepped foot in my territory. And I had not even started the real fight yet.

I closed the file one last time. The sharp click echoed in the silent room.

But my eyes stayed fixed on the window. On the dark. On the path she had taken.

And the wolf inside me kept pushing. Kept pulling. Kept whispering that this broken bride might just ruin me in ways I had never planned for.

POV: NyxI had performed in front of difficult audiences before. The Calloway pack gatherings, Edric's business dinners, where I was expected to be present and invisible simultaneously. Ren's friends, who had made a sport of finding the exact thing to say that would crack my composure in public.I had never cracked.Tonight was larger than any of that and the stakes were different, but the skill was the same, read the room faster than the room reads you, give them the face they expect, and keep everything that is actually happening behind it somewhere they cannot reach.I dressed without help. The gown that had been laid out for me was deep green, fitted, the kind of thing that said *I belong here* without trying too hard. I put it on, looked at my reflection and said to Mara, who had been quietly present all day: *we perform tonight.* She did not object. The hall was full when we arrived.Every senior pack member of the Ironfang Dominion, their mates, their ranking subordinates. Enou

POV: Lucian (3rd person limited)"She is here to suffer," Lucian said. "And when I am satisfied that she has suffered enough, she is finished. That is the plan. It has not changed."Thorne stood across the desk with his hands behind his back and his face doing nothing in particular, which was his default and also, Lucian had learned over twelve years, the expression he wore specifically when he had an opinion he was deciding whether to share."You have something to say?" Lucian asked."I said what I had to say.""You said four words and then stopped. That is not saying something, that is suggesting something and then making me ask for it."Thorne was quiet for a moment. Then, "I think she is not what you expected."Lucian looked at him. "What does that mean."Thorne said nothing further. He simply held the silence with the patience of a man who had made his point and was not going to be moved to elaborate on it.This was their dynamic and had been for over a decade. Thorne saw things

POV: NyxI found the kitchen by following the smell of something warm.It wasn’t a difficult trail. The estate's north corridor opened into a passage that smelled of woodsmoke, baked sugar and something savory underneath both, and I followed it. I had not been invited to the kitchen. I had not been told I could go there but I went anyway, because the alternative was sitting in my beautiful rooms feeling like a piece of furniture, and I had done enough of that in the Calloway house to last several lifetimes. The woman at the worktable was older, broad shouldered, with flour on her forearms and the unhurried movements of someone who had been doing this particular thing for so long that it had become part of how she existed in a room. She looked up when I came in.She did not look surprised. She did not look deferential." Oh hello, will you like to sit? You look like you haven't eaten a proper meal since before the wedding."I had eaten breakfast two hours ago but fuck it I sat down anyw

POV: NyxThe tray was outside my door when I woke up.It left on the floor with the specific care of someone who had decided not to knock, which told me something about the person who left it. A bowl of something warm. A cup of tea that was still steaming, which meant they had timed it. And beside the cup, wrapped in a small cloth, a moon-cake and a folded note beneath it with one word written inside.*Eat.*Just that. No signature, No title, No Good morning, my lady performance.I sat on the floor of my doorway and ate the moon cake before I touched anything else, and I did not examine why.Hilda came an hour later with the efficiency of someone who had a schedule and intended to keep it. She walked me through the estate's structure. Very clear, thorough, and entirely without warmth. My rooms and the east corridor were mine. The Alpha King's wing was on the west side of the upper floor and I was not to go there unless summoned. The public rooms like the dining hall, the receiving roo

POV: NyxThe reception ended and the maids came for me. Again.Three of them, appearing at my elbow with the seamless timing. They guided me upstairs without making it feel like guiding, which was its own kind of skill, and the bath was already drawn when we got there, steam rising from water that smelled of crushed flowers and warm oil. Something expensive. Something chosen by someone else, like everything in this house.I let them work. That was the thing about being handled your whole life. You learned when resistance cost more than it bought you. I stood still while they unhooked the dress, unwound my hair and helped me into the water. I kept my face neutral while their hands moved through the practiced steps of an arrangement I had no part in designing. They were kind in the way that professionally instructed people were kind. Thorough and Impersonal. Nobody asked how I was feeling. Nobody was going to.They oiled my skin after and Let my hair fall loose. And then one of them o
