After the wedding, the reception followed later. And it was total chaos. Ava might not flow with Damian on many things. But she definitely would have preferred a quiet wedding and reception. They were surrounded by many people. The “congratulations" could not just stop coming. Handshakes. Photographs. It was entirely overwhelming. Women in the corners were all whispering about Ava. It was clear that everyone wanted a piece of the newly wedded couple. And in all of the chaos, Ava had to smile every now and then. She smiled until her cheeks hurt. Then, the opportunity finally presented itself and she withdrew from the whole noise and went to a quiet balcony to catch her breath. She leaned against the railing as she sucked in the air. The door opened. Who was it? “Go away," she said without turning. She needed a moment of her own without being interrupted. But, somehow, someone didn't want her to have it. “I can't do that," the voice replied. She knew the voice. Damian Blackwood

Sleep was completely out of the equation for Ava. She could not sleep. Not after the strange caller gave a warning. She had heard really strange things tonight. There was evidence that could destroy everything. What was Damian talking about back there? She was standing by the window and looking out into the darkness. Suddenly, the weight of everything seemed to be pressing down on her. “... don't marry Damian Blackwood." Those words kept on echoing in her head. She looked at the diamond ring by the bedside. It was glistening and looked peaceful. But the price that came with it was outrageous. It was a trap…that she walked right into. Her phone buzzed. It was a message from Damian. And it read, “The car leaves at eight. Be ready.” Very short and direct message. He didn't care to ask how she was doing after all she heard them discussing. It irritated her. Damian was walking in the hallway when Ava found him. He saw her but kept walking, not minding the fiery gaze that came from her eyes. “Who was that man?" She queried him in a really demanding tone. Damian didn't stop. He didn't even look in her direction. “What man?" “Don't give me that act. The old man." “I already told you before," he replied. “No one?" “Yes." Ava heaved a heavy sigh at that. It was frustrating for her that Damian seemed to have little regard for her. “If he's no one as you have claimed, why on earth does he keep appearing?" Damian's gaze furrowed there. “You have been watching me?" “I have eyes and I see with them." Her response was solid. “If you have eyes, use them well. Be careful." He wanted to move but Ava stepp d right in front of him. “What does he know?" She pressed on. Her persistence was tiring for Damian. “Nothing." Ava woke up the next morning with one thought all over her mind. It was the photograph she had seen. She had barely slept. Each time she tried to get some sleep, the same faces flashed before her. Her father had been smiling with Damian's people like they had been family. And then, everything fell apart. Damian spent the past fifteen years hating them. She sat on the edge of her bed and stared at the floor as she tried to wrap her hands around the whole chaos. She had intended to visit the headquarters last night. But the opportunity never presented itself. Something wasn't adding up. Damian sounded too certain. At the same time, he admitted he wasn't sure. Soon, she would become Mrs Blackwood. That evening, Ava returned to the Blackwood manor alone. Damian had returned after dropping her off. The mansion was unusually quiet. It didn't seem like anyone lived there at all. It was already late in the night but sleep was far from her. So, she decided to take a little stroll within the mansion. She passed the study as she walked through the hallway. It was slightly open. She stopped as her curiosity got piqued and peeped inside. The room was dark except for the faint light that came through the windows. For a moment, she was hesitant. Maybe she could have just continued walking. But then, she stepped into the room. Her eyes scanned the whole place without searching for anything in particular.“Hmmm," she exhaled heavily as she looked around. Shelves. Books. Photographs….then, she saw it. An hour later, Ava sat beside Damian in the back seat of his car. Neither of them had spoken a word since they left the Blackwood Manor. Ava looked at him. His gaze was forward with an expressionless that could not be read. Ava could not say what he was thinking. “Okay." She finally broke the silence. “Do you mind telling me where exactly you are taking me to right now?" Damian didn't look at her. “You will find out. I already told you that." “You will," she muttered. “I see you enjoy saying that." “I enjoy making you curious," he replied. Ava scoffed at that. “You wish. I am not curious." He looked at her. “Are you not?" A wry smile escaped the corner of his lips, but quickly faded. “You have asked me the same question a good number of times to show you are curious."
