Something was different in the palace.

At first, not much. The walls were all the same, the soldiers all wore the same armor, and the servants still bowed to me. But the air felt different. Each corridor seemed to have eyes. Every word felt like it had been overheard.

And Adrian felt… further away.

But that was the problem.

He still put his hand on my back in public. He still took my hand when we had to. He still looked at me like he used to. But I had begun to notice things in him.

Small ones.

I arrived at the war chamber to a flurry of activity.I could tell something was up even before I saw it. I could sense it in the air, in the way the guards were moving too quickly, the doors opening and closing without permission, and the people talking in short bursts, which only happened in times of crises. As I entered, a soldier called to me.“My lady,” he said, bowing halfheartedly. “The eastern border is down. We have multiple breaches. Reports of attacks on three high points in the hills."I didn’t sit. I headed for the map table.“Show me,” I said.He laid the parchment out on the table. Red lines had already been marked out along the border wall. There were three areas glaring in magical markers for active conflict. My stomach tightened.“This is not random,” I said immediately. “These are coordinated attacks.”One of the generals nodded. “Yes. Timing is too good. They are attacking when the patrols are weakest in numbers.I looked up. “Where is Morgana?”As if she knew, she

They did not give me time to think. When I arrived at the lower ritual chamber, Adrian was already in the circle. It was a chamber hidden deep in the palace, where ancient stone met ancient magic. It felt thick, like I couldn't take a deep breath. The floor was covered in a ring of runes that glowed with a silver-blue light.Adrian was in the middle. He was bound, not with chains this time, but with cuffs bound by rune. He wasn’t struggling. He wasn’t speaking. He stood, watching the people around him, like he was weighing them up.Morgana was standing outside with the ritual overseer.Thorne stood close, with arms folded and a satisfied look on his face. And I was just outside the boundary line.“Go back, Selene,” Morgana said, not looking at me."No," I replied straight away. The overseer raised his hands. “The ceremony will soon begin. Any interference—”I don't care," I snapped.Adrian looked at me then. Not surprised. Not calm.Just… focused. Like he knew I would be here. That ma

I didn't sleep after what I saw. Or I did, but I didn't feel rested. It felt like waiting. I heard the voice again, when I shut my eyes. They are close to identifying you. I couldn't help but keep hearing that sentence until I felt like it was a message to me as well as her. I couldn't sleep that night. When I awoke Adrian was not there. That in itself wasn't surprising anymore. This time, though, it didn't bother me and, even more notably, I didn't follow. I told myself that I was just checking on him. But I didn't go to the council or the trade. I went to the gardens. Where I saw him head the night before. I ducked and hid between the hedgerows. And then I saw him. Adrian was standing by the stone wall, hidden behind the ivy and crumbling arches. He wasn’t alone. The hooded man stood beside him. I stopped behind a stone column. Close enough to hear. Far enough to not be seen. The hooded man spoke first. "They are ratcheting up the pressure", it said. It was low, controlled. “

Right but not satisfactory answers. I hated that I was thinking like this. I hated that I still felt the connection. And it still drew me to him.I was summoned to the archive of the council that morning. I didn't tell Adrian.I told myself I was curious. But it wasn’t. Thorne was there when I arrived. Of course he was.He was standing next to a long table with a pile of papers in front of him. Morgana was sitting beside him, perusing another pile o

Selene’s povThe sound of the alarm had not ceased since daybreak. It was a repeating and persistent rhythm that felt like the palace was on edge. Soldiers were dashing down the halls, their doors were slammed open and closed, and the order of the palace had collapsed.I stood by my window, observing the commotion. I watched the soldiers marching in lines through the courtyard, towards the outer gates and the forests on the horizon. The thief had fled sometime in the night, and now everyone was panicking as if the kingdom was at war.My fingers were still numb from the draining of magic Thorne had forced on me earlier. I wiggled my fingers again, trying to feel even the faintest flicker, but it was gone. Just emptiness. I felt more irritated than I should have.I heard a knock at my door. But it was opened.Morgana entered the room, two guards at her heels. It became tense as soon as she entered. She appeared serene, but her gaze was focused and wary, as if she was sizing up who was g

Selene's POV.Everyone in the hall fell silent as I spoke.Morgana placed her wine glass slowly.“And what,” she said levelly, is it you wish to say, selene?I didn't back down.I didn't soften my tone.“I desire to know,” I said, “what Alaric Vale you communed with, who said he had no son.”A shudder ran through the room.Thorne stiffened slightly.Morgana did not change her expression, but her fingers became tight around her glass stem.“Also, I would want to know why my mate was hurled down into the dungeon without due verification,” I added. “Why he was interrogated. Why they had held him like a criminal. And why you claimed he was a fraud despite him not being one?”The air felt heavy.Slowly Alaric turned his head to look at Morgana."What is she referring to?" he asked. There was no anger yet.Just confusion.Morgana lost his composure half a second.“It was a misconception,” she started with an easy fluency."Misunderstanding?" I cut in. “You have charged him with being a pret
