KATHERINE

I drove my car and parked a little far from the place. I didn’t want anyone to see me. My heart was beating really fast. Like, really really fast. I was so scared but I had to do this. I looked through the windshield.

The delivery bus was already gone. I groaned. “Ugh, why now?” I muttered. I hated being late.

I got out anyway. My feet made soft noises on the ground. Everything was quiet. The streets were empty. No one was around.

I kept walking slowly, looking at the shops and stal

  • BOUND TO THE ALPHA KING   CHAPTER 58

KATHERINE I walked into the small, cramped living room and saw them already waiting for me. Alicia, her mother, and three other women from the village were sitting in a circle on the floor, their faces long and solemn like they were attending a funeral instead of a simple prayer meeting. I didn't want to be there, my skin was crawling the moment I stepped over the threshold, but Alicia’s mother had practically dragged me from the hallway, and I didn't have the energy to fight her off. I sat down on a hard wooden stool, feeling out of place in my palace clothes, and felt Alicia’s mother grab my left hand while another woman took my right. We held hands in a tight, sweaty circle as the older woman closed her eyes and began to drone on, praying to the Moon Goddess to descend upon us and provide solutions for the burdens we carried. I stared at a crack in the floorboards, feeling a surge of irritation. It all felt so extreme and performative, and the mention of the Goddess made a bitter

  • BOUND TO THE ALPHA KING   CHAPTER 57

KATHERINE Stephen took a step closer, his height looming over me as the elders watched from their seats. He told me he wasn’t trying to own me, but that he was trying to help me survive being a noblewoman in a court that wanted to see me fail. I looked him dead in the eye and let out a short, sarcastic laugh. I asked him if that was what he considered me to be when he decided to force me to be his mate against my will. I reminded him that my survival hadn't been his priority when he destroyed my life, and I didn't need his help to navigate a world he threw me into.We argued back and forth, with the kind of heat that usually ended in a shouting match, but we were interrupted. A guard hurried into the hall, his face pale and tight with urgency. He stepped up to Stephen and spoke in a voice that was meant to be quiet, but I heard every word."Alpha, there’s a disturbance with the package," the guard said.Stephen’s expression changed instantly. The anger he had for me didn't vanish, bu

  • BOUND TO THE ALPHA KING   CHAPTER 56

KATHERINE Rowan stuttered as he tried to find a way around my question, but I didn't let him move an inch. I kept my eyes locked on his until he finally sighed and shifted. He told me that the rebels couldn't be trusted under any circumstances, and that was why we needed to have something over them. He argued that if we were hoping to use them as a weapon against Stephen, we had to be the ones holding the leash.I felt a wave of irritation wash over me, and I shook my head. I told him straight out that I wasn't going to be like Stephen or his council of elders. I wasn't interested in playing those kinds of games. I told him I was going to do things purely because they were the right thing to do, not because I had a hidden agenda or a trap to set. That sparked a sharp disagreement between us. Rowan looked at me like I was being naive, and for a second, the air between us felt brittle. But then he backed down. He apologized, his voice softening as he suggested that maybe I should try

  • BOUND TO THE ALPHA KING   Chapter 55

CHAPTER 55KATHERINE I spent the entire morning hunched over my computer, staring at a screen until the white light made my eyes ache. I was searching for the wolf I had seen through the barred windows at the academy. I pulled up every available file on the five vanquished Alphas, scouring digital archives and forbidden history forums for any image of their wolf forms. I found nothing. I wasn't surprised because Alphas didn't just publicize their wolves for the world to see, and the Magnus government had been thorough in scrubbing the records of the men they defeated.A shadow fell over my desk, and I didn't need to look up to know it was Rowan. He leaned down, his hand brushing against my shoulder. He was being touchy again, keeping his movements casual as if he wasn't aware of the boundary he was crossing."You look like you haven't slept," he said, his voice dropping an octave.I pulled away slightly and finally looked at him. "Where have you been, Rowan?" I tried to make my voice

  • BOUND TO THE ALPHA KING   Chapter 54

CHAPTER 54KATHERINE The classroom emptied quickly, and I lingered by my desk, pretending to organize my notes. A girl from the front row eyes darted oward the tutor’s office with a look of pure desperation. She approached me, her voice trembling as she begged me not to do anything to hurt him or report what I’d seen. I was shocked by how easily she begged, and I realized then that she wasn’t just a bully; she was a terrified girl caught in a trap of her own making. I didn’t give her an answer, I just told her to leave before someone else saw her, and I watched her rush down the hall until she disappeared.I walked into the tutor’s office without knocking. He looked up, his face pale and his hands shaking as he gripped the edge of his desk. He started talking immediately, trying to convince me that going down into the lair was a mistake. He admitted he had never actually been inside, only that he knew the entrance was there, and he suggested we find another way to get the information

  • BOUND TO THE ALPHA KING   Chapter 53

CHAPTER 53KATHERINEThe car slowed as we approached the academy, and my eyes were already scanning the grounds. I looked for Alex without making it obvious, checking the walkway, the entrance, the side road where students sometimes cut through. I didn’t see him, and that didn’t relax me the way it should have.I stepped out and adjusted my bag, keeping my posture easy, my face neutral. I’d been careful in the palace, quiet, subdued, letting them think the backlash had broken me. Stephen needed to believe that. Everyone did. If they thought I was done planning, they’d stop watching so closely. The truth was, I’d done more thinking in the last day than I had in weeks. The rebels weren’t the way forward.I’d wanted them to be, because they were loud and angry and visible, and it felt good to imagine Stephen losing everything the same way I had. But even if they succeeded one day, it wouldn’t be because of me. I’d just be another name on the list of people they used and discarded, and th
