KATHERINE

I woke up hot and annoyed and way too aware of my own skin. The dream was already slipping away, but the feeling wasn’t. Stephen’s mouth on my neck, his hands sliding under my shirt, that low laugh he does when he knows he’s winning.

I hated that my body remembered every second even when my brain was screaming no. I kicked the covers off like they were his fault and just lay there staring at the ceiling trying to burn the memory out of my head.

Didn’t work.

So I did the only thing I could think of: get out of the room and drown him out with old ladies gossiping. Figured if anyone could talk nonstop about boring crap, it was them.

I threw on the least fancy dress I owned, still fancier than anything I ever wore back home and went looking for Jessie’s little tea circle. Found them in the east parlor, all pastel dresses and tiny cups. Jessie, Alicia’s mom, the Broadcast elder’s wife, Mrs. Helford, the Transport elder’s wife, Mrs. Crane and Jessie’s actual mom. • BOUND TO THE ALPHA KING    CHAPTER 42

STEPHEN I punched his face hard, and blood spurted out of his mouth. He was shaking, his body trembling. His face was severely battered by me, and I wasn't planning on stopping anytime soon. I had him tied up in a chair alongside the other smugglers. But he was the one I really needed. After all, he led the troops.I punched him again. His lips bled badly, and his eyes swollen up. I grabbed him by the collar, his face close to mine. “I'm going to ask you this once again. Where are the goods transported too?”He swirled his head back and forth, trying to ease the pain I had inflicted on him. “I've told you time and again that I don't know where they're being transported too. I have no fucking idea.”Anger submerged through me. I kicked him hard out of anger, he coughed hard and blood spurted on the ground. I didn't even know where the anger came from, I continued punching him hard until there was hardly any breath left in him.Alaric had to step in, stopping me before I took his life.

  • BOUND TO THE ALPHA KING   CHAPTER 41

KATHERINE I sat at my desk long after the judgment hall cleared out, staring at the blank computer screen till my eyes started stinging bad.The words I voiced inside kept ringing in my mind. Everyone shifted their gaze toward me as if I’d sprouted a head or something unusual. Stephen and his senior members believed they had the insurgents completely understood. They remained stuck pursuing illusions convinced the detained smugglers were the players but the true scheme—the actual method of getting supplies to the rebels—remained deeply concealed.I didn't eat lunch at all. The maids knocked at times their voices were polite and soft, asking if I wanted a tray delivered or if I planned to join everyone downstairs for the meal. I simply muttered that I wasn't hungry and continued scrolling through tabs tapping links that went nowhere.I had been searching for hours by now. Initially I looked into the five alphas Stephen defeated years back—Aaron Bradley and his fellows. Mostly public

STEPHENShe walked in gracefully, clearly oblivious to the stares she received—or maybe she just ignored them. Everyone marveled at how she comfortably walked in with Rowan and that too in my presence. The growing feelings in my chest annoyed me. I hated the way it controlled me, and my mood depended on it. She was the only who had such power, and I couldn't even tell if this was intentional. But whichever one it was; it was definitely working.Rowan took a seat, and tapped the next chair signifying her to sit beside me. For a split second—just a split. I noticed the uncertainty that appeared in her eyes. They disappeared as quickly as it came.As though as if she weighed the pros and the cons, but decided it was fine pushing everyone to the edge. Giving them something to really talk about. The fact that I never even wanted a mate, but she messed so easily with my head. The elders forced me to take a mate leading to my throne. I knew I shouldn't feel this way. It shouldn't affect me.

  • BOUND TO THE ALPHA KING   CHAPTER 39

KATHERINE Before I could speak, a maid arrived. Rowan immediately dispersed himself from me and composed himself. I noticed a slight shift in his gaze, but could comprehend why he was acting so awkward all of a sudden. The maid approached us. All smiles on her face. “Sorry to interrupt you, Luna. But I wanted to ask if you'd be interested in some bakeries we baked.”I exchanged glance with Rowan, who just remained quiet. “Sure,” I replied. I returned my gaze to Rowan. “Wed speak some other time.”He nodded simply. I left with the maid as we both made our way to the kitchen where a bunch of pastries were laid out on the pan. My mouth watered at the sight. They looked so delectable and smelled so good.I wasted no time in rushing one into my mouth. The taste was divine. I didn't realize when I let out a small moan. It baffled me deeply how I never came across something as delicious as this. The head maids noticed my reaction and just chuckled lightly. “I see you're enjoying the pastrie

KATHERINE I barely slept. Again. For like the third night in a row. The stupid bet was stuck in my head on repeat. If I fall for Stephen, I have to accept the bond, accept him, kneel, submit, call him Alpha in bed and everywhere else like some perfect little Luna. If I don’t fall, he lets me walk free. No chains. No nothing. Forever. I’d rather swallow nails than fall for that murderer. But before I walk out that gate with my head high, I’m going to burn every single thing he loves to the ground. His throne, his reputation, his whole fake-perfect kingdom. He’ll be left picking up ashes and wondering how the girl he thought he broke actually broke him. That’s the plan. That’s always been the plan.Breakfast was the usual torture. All the fancy plates and fake laughs and people pretending they weren’t watching my every move. I was stabbing my eggs like they owed me money when Leona showed up looking like she’d spent an hour making sure she was the prettiest poison in the room. Dr
