The second I unlocked my dorm room door, a muffled scream hit me square in the face.

Allie was face down on her unmade bed, burying her head into a throw pillow like she was trying to suffocate herself. Wadded-up, mascara-stained paper towels littered the floor around her mattress like tiny white landmines.

I stepped over a crumpled bag of pretzel sticks and closed the door with my heel, still holding my half-empty iced caramel macchiato.

"Allie?" I dropped my backpack onto my desk chair. "W

She threw a crumpled, half-used baby wipe right at my head, but it missed and slapped onto the floorboards with a wet thud.Allie stumbled out of the closet half-naked, violently scrubbing at her cheeks until her skin looked bright red. Her mascara was completely smeared, making her look like a frantic raccoon, but she didn't even care. She hopped on one foot, cursing under her breath while trying to force her hips into those skin-tight black vinyl pants."Book the Uber," she barked at me, yanking a bright red cropped halter top over her head. "Do it right now while I do my lip gloss, Clara. We need to get there before I start crying again."I pulled my phone out of my jacket pocket, unlocked it, and just stared at the home screen."Girl, there's a reason I ride my bike everywhere," I said, leaning back against my wall and turning my phone screen toward her.Allie paused, her lip gloss wand hovering two inches from her mouth. She blinked at me, looking totally confused. "And why do yo

Allie snorted, leaning her head back against the cold dorm wall. "You are boring, girl.""Whatever," I muttered, sliding off my desk chair and flopping onto my own unmade mattress.I pulled my phone out of my jacket pocket, unlocking the screen to scroll through mind-numbing campus group chats and TikToks just to give my hands something to do.Across the tiny rug, Allie sat bolt upright, her thumb moving across her phone screen with terrifying, surgical precision."Fourteen minutes ago," she muttered under her breath, her voice dropping into full, unhinged detective mode. "He posted fourteen minutes ago, Clara.""Allie, do not do this to yourself," I said without looking up from a video of a golden retriever eating watermelon. "Lock the phone. You're literally picking at an open wound.""No, you don't understand, look at the contrast!" she demanded, shoving her screen so close to my nose I had to lean my head back to focus. "He used a pitch-black background. Plain white text. Times N

"So... you really want a man who would choke the life out of you, all in the name of sex?" I asked, my mouth hanging open while I stared at her in total, unfiltered shock. Allie didn't even flinch. She didn't blush or look away. She just stared right back at me across the two feet of rug separating our twin beds, her dark eyes deadpan and serious. "You really get me," she said, leaning forward until her elbows were digging into her knees. "I need a man who would slap me in the face while banging my little ass, Clara. I need to reach climax, girl! I need to be caught by surprise, not sitting there predicting every single micro-move my man is gonna do in the bedroom!" She pointed a jagged, acrylic nail right at my nose. "Come on Clara, you surely do have a wild fantasy as well?" "Yeah, but not as wild as yours," I said, quickly pulling my legs up against my chest and wrapping my arms around my knees like a shield. "I just want to feel loved by a guy I love... which is Justin. I don'

I turned her phone ninety degrees to the left, squinting at the screen until my eyes started watering. Position fourteen looked less like an actual romantic move and more like an orthopedic emergency. The stick figure drawn on top had both legs hooked behind its own head while somehow balancing its entire body weight on one elbow against a nightstand. "Allie, be dead serious with me for two seconds," I said, holding the glowing screen out at arm's length like it was a live grenade. "Do human limbs even bend like this?" Allie wiped a fresh smear of dark mascara off her cheekbone, glaring at me through her swollen, red eyelids. "No, Clara! Obviously not right now!" she barked, her raspy voice echoing off our paper-thin dorm walls. "I get a cramp if I sit cross-legged on our rug for more than ten minutes!" "Then how were you planning to pull off... whatever this is?" I turned the phone upside down, zooming in on position eighteen. "This one literally looks like a game of Twister pl

"What is happening right now? Did somebody die?" She bolted upright, her dark hair sticking out in five different directions. Her eyes were puffy red, eyeliner smeared all the way down to her cheekbones. "Shawn and I are over," she choked out, her voice cracking in the middle. "It’s done. I broke up with him." I stood dead still by my desk, holding my coffee cup in midair. "Wait. You broke up with him?" "Yes!" She grabbed another paper towel off her nightstand and blew her nose with a sound li

"Five minutes," I said, pointing past his massive truck toward the curved stone bench sitting near the science library. "And we stand nowhere near your car. I don't need half the hockey team taking photos and blowing up the group chat." Carter didn't argue. He didn't offer a witty comeback or try that lazy half-smile he usually flexed when he wanted his way. He just nodded, his shoulders slumping like he’d been running heavy drills all afternoon. "Lead the way," he said quietly. We walked over to the bench. I sat down on the cold concrete, clutching the iced macchiato between both hands. The plastic was sweating against my palms, but the drink itself was a total lifesaver. He sat on the far edge, leaving a good three feet of empty space between us. He stared straight at the asphalt between his beat-up sneakers, his hands shoved deep into his hoodie pocket. "I blew it," he said. His voice sounded like gravel, raspy and totally stripped of that smooth, easy confidence he wore like
