*Chapter 22: The Dubai trap

The cuffs clicked shut at 3:47 AM Dubai time.

Cold metal. Too tight. Jennifer didn’t flinch.

She stood in the marble courtyard of Harry’s compound with Elena asleep against her shoulder, David’s hand on the small of her back, and Ravenna’s eyes locked on the Dubai police captain reading charges in perfect English.

“Jennifer Benz,” the captain said. “You are under arrest for kidnapping, unlawful detention, and extortion under Article 344 of the UAE Penal Code. Footage has been presented to this court showing you threatening Mr. Harry Argent with a firearm.”

“It’s fake,” David said. His voice was low. Dangerous. The same voice he used when Benz Holdings lost a billion in futures and he didn’t blink. “Deepfake. Run the metadata.”

The captain didn’t look up. “The court will determine authenticity. Until then, you are both coming with us.”

“They took my daughter,” Jennifer said. She kept her voice steady for Elena. “Harry Argent kidnapped Elena. We came to get her back.”

The captain finally met her eyes. “Then you should have called us first, Ms. Benz. Not bring a gun to a private residence.”

Jennifer almost laughed. “I didn’t have a gun.”

“You did on the broadcast,” the captain said. He gestured to the two officers behind him. “Ms. Benz. Hands.”

David stepped forward. “If you touch her, I’ll buy this police district before sunrise.”

“David,” Jennifer said quietly. She shifted Elena’s weight. The little girl stirred and whispered, “Mom?”

“I’m here,” Jennifer whispered back. “Close your eyes.”

She held out her wrists. The cuffs snapped shut.

Ravenna hadn’t moved. She stood three feet away, watching. No cuffs on her. Not yet.

“Interesting,” Ravenna said. “They arrest the mother but not the aunt who walked in with two guns.”

The captain’s eyes flicked to her. “Ms. Loriss, you will come with us as a witness.”

Ravenna smiled. It wasn’t pleasant. “I’m not a witness. I’m evidence.”

They were led out to waiting police SUVs. No sirens. No press. Yet.

But Jennifer knew it was coming. Harry’s deepfake was already on every screen. By sunrise, the world would think she was a criminal.

David was put in a separate SUV. Through the window, his eyes met hers. He didn’t say “I’ll fix this.” He didn’t have to. His jaw was set the way it got during board wars. Calculating. Ruthless. Patient.

Jennifer looked down at Elena. “Baby, it’s going to be okay.”

Elena’s small hand found hers, even through the cuffs. “Are we going to jail, Mom?”

“No,” Jennifer said. “We’re going to a place where people ask questions. You just tell the truth, okay?”

Elena nodded. She was six, but she’d learned early that truth was a weapon.

The SUV doors closed.

---

_Dubai Police Headquarters, 4:22 AM_

The interrogation room was white. No windows. One table. One camera in the corner, red light blinking.

Jennifer sat with her hands cuffed to a metal ring on the table. Elena sat on her lap, asleep again. A female officer had offered to take her. Jennifer said no.

The door opened.

Not the captain. A woman in a tailored black suit. Late 40s. Eyes like flint.

“Ms. Benz,” the woman said. “I’m Prosecutor Amina Al-Farsi. You have the right to remain silent. You have the right to an attorney.”

Jennifer nodded. “I want David Benz as my attorney.”

Prosecutor Al-Farsi almost smiled. “Mr. Benz is also under investigation for assault and threats against a UAE citizen. He cannot represent you.”

“Then I’ll represent myself,” Jennifer said.

Al-Farsi sat down. She placed a tablet on the table. Pressed play.

The deepfake filled the screen. Jennifer, holding a gun. Jennifer, voice shaking: “Confess or she dies.”

Jennifer watched it once. Twice. Then she looked up.

“It’s not me,” she said.

Al-Farsi tilted her head. “Our forensic team says it’s 99.8% accurate. Same voice pattern. Same facial micro-expressions. Same ring on your finger.”

“Because Harry Argent had access to eleven years of footage,” Jennifer said. “Press conferences. Interviews. He could fake anything.”

Al-Farsi leaned forward. “Then explain why Elena was found in his compound. With you.”

“Because he took her,” Jennifer said. “Check the Geneva CCTV. Check the flight logs. Check—”

“We did,” Al-Farsi interrupted. “The SUV that took Elena was registered to a shell company dissolved in 2019. The men in the footage are dead. Found in the desert this morning. Bullet wounds. Execution style.”

Jennifer’s blood went cold. “Harry’s covering tracks.”

“Or you are,” Al-Farsi said. She slid another tablet across the table. Financial records. Wire transfers. “Three hours before Elena disappeared, 40 million USD moved from a Benz Holdings account to an offshore entity. Then to Dubai.”

Jennifer stared at it. “I didn’t authorize that.”

“Your biometric signature did,” Al-Farsi said.

Jennifer closed her eyes. Frame job. Clean. Perfect.

The door opened again.

David walked in. No cuffs. Two officers behind him, but they stopped at the threshold.

“I’m her attorney,” David said.

Al-Farsi stood. “You’re not licensed in the UAE.”

“I’m licensed in 14 jurisdictions,” David said. “And I own 18% of the firm that funds this department. Let me sit down before I buy it.”

He sat. He didn’t look at the prosecutor. He looked at Jennifer. Then at Elena.

“Baby,” he said softly.

Elena opened her eyes. “Uncle David.”

David’s expression cracked, just for a second. Then it was steel again.

Al-Farsi cleared her throat. “Mr. Benz, if you interfere—”

“I’m not interfering,” David said. “I’m correcting the record.” He placed a drive on the table. “Forensic analysis of the deepfake. Frame-by-frame. AI artifacts in the shadow mapping. Voice synthesis markers in the sibilant sounds. This was generated by software registered to Loriss Corp three weeks ago.”

Al-Farsi didn’t touch the drive. “That can be faked too.”

David leaned forward. “Then run it through Interpol. Run it through the FBI. Run it through anyone who isn’t on Harry Argent’s payroll.”

The prosecutor’s eyes narrowed. “You’re accusing a UAE citizen of international fraud.”

“I’m accusing a murderer of framing an innocent woman,” David said. “There’s a difference.”

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Then the red light on the camera blinked twice.

Al-Farsi stood. “We’ll review your evidence. Ms. Benz, you’ll remain in custody for 48 hours.”

Jennifer stood too, Elena in her arms. “I want a phone call.”

“You get one,” Al-Farsi said. “After booking.”

As they led Jennifer out, David caught her wrist. His thumb brushed her knuckles. Just once.

“I’m not letting them keep you,” he said. So quiet only she could hear.

Jennifer nodded. She believed him.

She had to.

_Geneva, 6:03 AM_

The news hit like a bomb.

_Benz Holdings CEO Arrested in Dubai Kidnapping Scandal._

_Footage Shows Jennifer Benz Threatening Harry Argent._

_Stock Plummets 32% in Pre-Market Trading._

Ravenna watched it on a screen in Laurent’s office. Her wrists were cuffed now. Real ones. But the officers left her in the room alone.

She picked up the phone. Dialed a number she hadn’t used in eleven years.

It rang twice.

“Who is this?” A woman’s voice. Older. Tired.

“Elise,” Ravenna said.

Silence.

Then: “You’re supposed to be dead.”

“I am,” Ravenna said. “And you’re supposed to be dead too. Yet here we are.”

Elise laughed. Soft. “Robert trained you well. You always call when you want something.”

“I don’t want anything,” Ravenna said. “Except my niece is back.”

Another pause. “Elena isn’t your niece, Ravenna. She’s leveraged.”

Ravenna closed her eyes. “Harry framed Jennifer. You know it.”

“I know Jennifer Benz is going to prison,” Elise said. “And when she does, Benz Holdings collapses. And when it collapses, the 400 million Robert laundered becomes worthless. And when that happens, Harry has nothing left to threaten me with.”

Ravenna’s grip tightened on the phone. “You’re helping him.”

“I’m surviving,” Elise said. “Same as you did. Eleven years in prison for me. Was it worth it, sister?”

The line went dead.

Ravenna set the phone down. She looked at her cuffed wrists.

Then she smiled.

“Yeah,” she whispered. “It was.”

She stood up. The cuffs were an old police issue. She’d picked locks in worse places.

She walked to the door. The guard outside didn’t stop her.

Because Ravenna Loriss didn’t ask permission anymore.

She took it.

---

_Dubai, 7:15 AM_

Jennifer sat on a thin mattress in a holding cell. Concrete walls. One light. Elena asleep beside her, head on Jennifer’s thigh.

The TV in the corner was on. Muted. But the headline scrolled across the bottom:

_BREAKING: Jennifer Benz to be extradited to Switzerland for trial. Benz Holdings faces liquidation.

Jennifer pressed her forehead to Elena’s hair.

“I’m sorry, baby,” she whispered.

Elena’s eyes opened. “You didn’t do it, Mom. I know you didn’t.”

Jennifer’s throat closed. “How do you know?”

“Because you don’t lie,” Elena said simply. “Even when it’s easier.”

Jennifer pulled her closer.

The door opened.

Not a guard. David.

No lawyer. No prosecutor. Just David, in the same suit from last night, tie loosened, eyes bloodshot.

“How?” Jennifer asked.

“I own the building,” David said simply. He unlocked her cuffs with a key. Then Elena’s small plastic ones.

Jennifer rubbed her wrists. “We can’t run. It’ll look worse.”

“I’m not running,” David said. He knelt in front of her. “I’m taking you home.”

Jennifer shook her head. “Harry wins if we run.”

David took her face in both hands. His thumbs brushed her cheeks. “Harry wins if you sit in a cell while he destroys everything you built. We fight him from outside.”

Jennifer stared at him. “This is illegal.”

“So was what he did to your father,” David said. “Sometimes the law isn’t justice. Sometimes justice is breaking the law.”

Elena tugged Jennifer’s sleeve. “Mom, can we go home?”

Jennifer looked at David. Really looked at him. Eleven years of trust issues. Eleven years of “don’t get close.”

She nodded once.

David stood. He didn’t touch her again. He didn’t have to.

As they walked out, Jennifer’s phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

_“You broke her out. Now the world believes you’re guilty. Good. Phase 3 begins.”_

Attached: a photo.

Elise Loriss, holding a tablet. On the screen: the Benz Holdings board vote. Live for 12 hours.

And a caption: _“One vote left. Make it count, sister.”_

Jennifer stopped walking.

David saw her face. “What is it?”

Jennifer showed him the phone.

David’s jaw tightened. “Elise.”

“She has the last 0.3% of shares,” Jennifer said. “If she votes for Ravenna, Ravenna takes the company. If she votes for us, we win. But she won’t vote for us unless…”

“Unless we give her what Harry has,” David finished. “The real evidence.”

Jennifer looked at Elena. Asleep again, trusting completely.

“Where is it?” Jennifer asked.

David was quiet for a long moment.

Then he said, “Geneva. In a safety deposit box only Edward Benz could open.”

Jennifer frowned. “Edward’s dead.”

David met her eyes. “Not his biometrics.”

Jennifer’s blood went cold. “What does that mean?”

David didn’t answer.

Because the lights went out.

Again.

And this time, when they came back on—

Ravenna was standing in the doorway.

Blood on her knuckles.

And behind her, two armed men in Loriss Corp uniforms.

“Sorry I’m late,” Ravenna said. “Traffic.”

She looked at Jennifer.

“Jennifer,” she said. “We need to talk about your father.”

Jennifer stood up, putting herself between Ravenna and Elena.

“What about him?” Jennifer asked.

Ravenna held up a key. Old. Brass. Engraved with the Benz family crest.

“This was in his pocket when I found him,” Ravenna said. “He pressed it into my hand right before he died.”

Jennifer stared at it.

David went still.

“Edward Benz didn’t die because he found the laundered money,” Ravenna said quietly.

She paused.

“He died because he found something worse.”

The key gleamed in the dim light.

And Jennifer’s phone buzzed again.

_“6:00 AM. Watch the news. Your father isn’t the only Benz who kept secrets.”_

On screen, a live feed started.

A basement. Concrete walls. A chair.

And a man tied to it.

Old. Bearded. Eyes like David’s.

A voice off-camera: “Say hello to your son, Robert.”

The man looked up. Straight into the camera.

“David,” he said. “I’m sorry.”

Jennifer dropped the key.

It hit the floor with a sound like a gunshot.

POV: Jennifer_The Benz Foundation office smelled like new paint and old ghosts. Three months after the roof. Three months after Clause Seven burned in the Geneva wind. Three months after I learned that the man I’d spent eleven years hating was the same man who’d saved my life with his body. David was at the window. Back to me. Shoulders tight. The way they got when he was trying not to break something. Or someone. Harry was in the boardroom with Elena, teaching her how to read a P&L sheet. She was six. She called it “money coloring.” He called it “redemption.” Me? I was staring at a file on the desk. His file. The one I wasn’t supposed to find. *1. The Discovery*It was an accident. I was looking for Elena’s school registration forms in David’s office. The drawer stuck. I yanked it. The false bottom popped open. Inside: a thin medical folder. No name. Just a date. 11 years ago. The night Edward Benz Sr. faked his death. I should’ve closed it. I should’ve put it ba

  • BRIDE FOR LEASE   Chapter 27: Boardroom War

POV: David_The elevator doors slid open on the 150th floor and cold hit me like a fist. Benz Tower wasn’t a building. It was a blade. Glass and steel drove into Geneva’s sky, and tonight every window was dark except one. Floor 150. The boardroom. Harry’s boardroom. “Don’t,” Jennifer whispered behind me. Her hand caught my sleeve. “David, if we walk in there, there’s no contract left to save. Only war.” I looked down at her. Elena. The woman who’d spent eleven years hating me, hiding from me, raising our daughter alone because she thought I’d chosen the company over her. She wasn’t wrong. But she was wrong about tonight. I wasn’t choosing the company. I was choosing her. “The bomb’s on a timer,” I said quietly. I showed her my phone. 2:58:00. Counting down. “Harry wants the Benz legacy to die with us in that room. Unless we give him Elena.” Jennifer’s jaw tightened. “Then we won't give him to me.” “We give him something better,” I said. And I pushed the elevator but

  • BRIDE FOR LEASE   Chapter 26: The Broker

POV: David The market opened in 47 minutes. I knew because every second was ticking on Laurent’s dashboard. Red numbers. Benz Holdings bleeding out at 18% pre-market because of the kiss video in Ch 25. Harry stood in front of his SUV with 12 men and enough guns to start a war. Elena in my arms. Jennifer’s hand in mine, a gun pressed into her palm that she hated but held anyway. “Hello, family,” Harry said. He smiled. The same smile Robert used before he pulled a trigger. “Time to choose which Benz dies first.” I didn’t choose. I shot the tire on his lead SUV. Chaos. Bullets. Laurent floored it. The car fishtailed around Harry’s blockade and we were moving, Geneva streets blurring past at 5:12 AM. Jennifer twisted in her seat. “You just started a war.” “No,” I said. “Harry did, ten years ago, when he killed my father.” Elena’s small voice cut through the gunfire behind us. “Mom, what’s a broker?” Jennifer pulled her closer. “Nothing you need to worry about, baby.” She was

  • BRIDE FOR LEASE   The Choice

Chapter 24: The Choice_POV: Jennifer The key hit the floor and the sound was louder than the explosion. Brass on marble. Eleven years of lies distilled into one second. “You lied to me for eleven years,” I said. My voice didn’t shake. It couldn’t. If it shook, Elena would see it. If Elena saw it, she’d break. “Get out.” David didn’t move. Of course he didn’t. David Benz didn’t follow orders. He gave them. He owned buildings. He owned airspace. He owned the moment you thought you had control. But he didn’t own me. Not anymore. Elena pressed her face into my leg. “Mom? What’s wrong?” I crouched. Put my hands on her shoulders. It made my face calm. The same face I used in boardrooms when men tried to tell me I didn’t belong. “Nothing’s wrong, baby. We’re just playing a game. Hide and seek.” “Hide and seek with bombs?” Elena whispered. “Especially with bombs,” I said. I kissed her forehead. It tasted like smoke and fear. Behind me, David spoke. “Jennifer—” “Don’t

  • BRIDE FOR LEASE   The Ghost

Chapter 23: The Ghost_POV: David Benz David didn’t panic. David never panicked. Panic was for men who hadn’t watched their father bleed out on a parking garage floor at age seventeen. Panic was for boys who thought the world was fair. So when the Dubai police captain read Jennifer’s charges at 3:47 AM, David catalogued the room. Three exits. Six armed men. One camera with a blinking red light that meant live feed to someone who wasn’t in the room. Harry was watching. David let them cuff Jennifer. He let them take Elena. He didn’t move. Not yet. Because the first rule of Benz Holdings board wars: let them think you’re cornered. Then buy the corner. He was led to a separate SUV. No cuffs. That told him everything. They weren’t arresting him. They were isolating him. Making Jennifer think she was alone. Harry’s game. Always Harry’s game. Through the window, Jennifer looked at him. No fear in her eyes. Just that steel she got when she was cornered and calculating. She
