"Mia!"

Dad's terrified shout rang out from the riverbank.

He didn't even stop to take off his shoes. He dove straight into the deep water and swam toward me with everything he had.

"Grab my hand! Don't be scared!"

His rough hands caught me under the arms and pushed me above the surface.

Air rushed back into my lungs, and I gasped for breath.

Then a strong current surged beneath us.

Derek Lawson, the man who had been "drowning" in the middle of the river, suddenly cut through the water toward us.

There was no panic in his movements.

Because Derek wasn't drowning at all.

He was a shady influencer who built his following by staging fake emergencies and baiting Good Samaritans into his setups.

Before every stunt, he scripted the whole thing, planted hidden cameras along the shore, and wore a concealed flotation vest under his clothes.

Then he picked an unsuspecting passerby who looked like an easy target.

Anyone who tried to save him became his next prey, all for views.

Beneath the murky water, Derek grabbed Dad's right ankle with both hands and yanked hard.

Dad grunted in shock as he was dragged under.

A stream of bubbles burst across the surface.

I clung to his neck and sank with him.

The water was dark and cloudy, but I forced my eyes open. I could see Derek's face clearly.

He was holding his breath, a cold smile on his lips.

He wasn't fighting to survive. He was deliberately trying to drag the man who had come to save him under.

"Let go!"

I clawed desperately at his fingers.

Dad had already burned through most of his strength trying to keep me above water.

Now, Derek had him trapped. Dad's face had turned purple from lack of air, his eyes bulging as he struggled for oxygen.

Suddenly, I saw him exactly as he had looked in my last life when they pulled him from the river.

No.

I couldn't let that happen again.

Dad's survival instinct kicked in. He lifted his left leg and kicked Derek hard in the shoulder.

Once.

Twice.

Derek flinched and let go.

With the last of his strength, Dad held me up and fought his way back to shore.

"Cough... cough..."

The second he crawled onto the bank, he collapsed in the mud, coughing up river water.

His whole body shook. His fingers dug into the wet gravel until his fingertips were scraped raw.

He had come terrifyingly close to dying. And his body knew it.

A few yards away, Derek was calmly treading water. When he realized he hadn't managed to take us down with him, he swam casually back to shore.

He barely looked winded. He shook the water from his hair.

"Just my damn luck!"

Then he pointed at Dad, who was still coughing on the ground.

"What kind of man are you? You just left me there to drown!

"All you cared about was your own kid. You watched me struggle and did nothing!"

People rushed over. Within seconds, dozens of phones were pointed at us.

"Everybody look at this guy!" Derek shouted at the cameras. "He's heartless!

"My leg cramped up. I almost drowned!

"He was already swimming toward me, but the second his daughter jumped in, he turned around and kicked me away!

"What kind of person does that? So a decent person is just supposed to drown?"

Angry voices rose from the crowd.

"What's wrong with this guy?"

"He was already in the water. How hard would it have been to help?"

"That's unbelievably selfish."

Dad slowly lifted his head. His lips trembled as he tried to explain.

"No... that's not what happened. Under the water, he..."

"What about underwater?"

Derek cut him off. "Does that somehow give you the right to kick me?"

He marched over and pointed a finger in Dad's face.

"This isn't over. Everyone online is watching."

I scrambled to my feet and spread my arms in front of Dad.

"You're lying!"

I glared at Derek, shaking with anger.

"You grabbed my dad's ankle underwater and tried to pull him down!

"You weren't drowning at all!"

Derek froze for a second. Then he burst out laughing.

"You hear that?"

He turned toward the crowd. "Now even the little girl's making up lies!

"She'll say anything to protect her heartless dad."

He shook his head, putting on an injured expression.

"Think about it. I'm a grown man. Why would I grab his ankle underwater and risk my own life?"

The crowd got even louder.

"Already lying at her age?"

"Like father, like daughter."

"Put them on blast! Let everyone see what kind of people they are!"

I shook with fury, my nails digging into my palms.

Dad struggled to his feet and pulled me against his chest, shielding my face from the cameras.

"Stop filming..." His voice was hoarse. "Please. Don't film my daughter."

His plea only drew more cameras.

That night, a maliciously edited video went viral across the city.

The title read:

[Cold-Blooded Father Leaves Man to Drown - Seven-Year-Old Daughter Can't Stop Lying]

The footage had been deliberately cut to show only Dad kicking Derek away and me arguing back afterward.

Within hours, the comments were flooded with abuse.

[Doxx him! Ruin his life!]

[People like him don't deserve to live. Throw him back in the river!]

It was that time of year again, when families visited the graves of loved ones.Around this time in my last life, Grandma would take me to the two lonely graves by the river and lay flowers there. She would cry and murmur over and over, "If only I hadn't taken you to the river that day. If only I hadn't let your dad go save that man."After paying her respects, she'd crouch beside the graves, unable to bring herself to leave. But in this life, everything was different.Dad had quit his job as a bus driver. His work in drowning prevention and safe rescue had caught the attention of a major local company, which recruited him as its safety manager. His salary tripled. He had every weekend off and even received holiday bonuses.Mom didn't have to work three jobs anymore, either. She quit the backbreaking job at the textile mill and used their savings to lease a small storefront just outside our apartment complex, where she opened a neighborhood convenience store. The shelves were always ne

After the case was finally over, life wasn't the same anymore.Between the police report and the nonstop media coverage, Dad became known all over the city as the "hero bus driver."Several major creator management agencies came knocking, leaving a stack of business cards on our coffee table. They were throwing around six-figure offers, all hoping to turn Dad into a livestream shopping host. One sharply dressed agent sat on our couch and slid a thick contract across the coffee table, leaning forward eagerly."Mr. Carter, all you have to do is go live and talk about what it was like being falsely accused."With all the attention you're getting, you'd go viral instantly!"Dad didn't even open it.He stood, walked to the door, and held it open."I didn't save anyone to get famous online."The agent opened his mouth to argue, but Dad had already picked up the gift basket he'd brought and pressed it back into his arms."And I'm not turning my family's scars into content just so you can cash

Six months later.Superior Court, Courtroom 3.Every seat in the gallery was taken, and a row of reporters with cameras lined the hallway outside.Derek Lawson stood at the defense table in jail-issued clothing, his hands restrained in front of him.He was almost unrecognizable. He'd lost so much weight that his cheekbones jutted out, his eyes were sunken, and deep hollows had formed in his cheeks. There was no trace left of the arrogance he'd shown at the river.Still, he refused to admit what he'd done."Your Honor, I'm innocent!"Derek's face was a mess of tears and snot."I admit I staged the drowning for views."But it was just a prank. I was only trying to make it more dramatic!"I never meant to kill Michael Carter!"Brenda brought that knife herself. I didn't even know she had it!"His defense attorney rose and argued that Derek had never intended to kill Michael, pushing for a lesser charge. He spoke for more than ten minutes, citing case after case and laying out his argument

News of Derek's arrest at the train station hadn't even spread yet when the rest of his crew started stirring up trouble online. They edited together footage of the police pinning Brenda down on the bridge, added dramatic, heroic-sounding music, and posted it under a sensational title:[Derek Tried to Do the Right Thing - Now Thugs and Corrupt Cops Are Coming After Him!]The moment the video went up, his rabid followers went wild. They flooded every major platform with posts and even swarmed the police department's official account with angry comments.[Free Derek! [This account has been permanently banned for suspected violations of platform rules.]All three livestreams went black at once.Instead of Brenda's updates, all Derek could hear over the radio were sirens and her panicked screams."It's over..."His hand jerked. The wineglass slipped from his fingers and hit the carpet, splashing wine across his shoes.Derek froze for three full seconds. Then he shot to his feet, grabbed his backpack, and swept every hard drive and USB drive on the table into it.He booked the first available train out of state, planning to flee that night....Under the harsh overhead light in the interrogation room, Brenda's face looked ghostly pale. She was still holding out, insisting it had all been "just a prank video to scare him."Officer Cooper slapped the folding knife down on the table."Brenda, you know how much time you could get for reckless endangerment, right?"And then there's this knife..."He tapped the nick in the blade with the tip of his pen."We

The cruiser doors flew open.Officer Cooper led several officers in full tactical gear onto the bridge, cutting through the cloud of white powder."Police! Nobody move!"The command stopped everyone cold.Brenda's eyes were red and watering from the extinguisher powder. She bent down, fumbling for the folding knife she'd dropped. Before she could reach it, a black boot pinned the blade to the pavement."You're going after the wrong people!" Brenda cried as she dropped to the ground and started making a scene."That crazy little girl sprayed us with a fire extinguisher! We were only trying to help!"Officer Cooper didn't bother arguing with her. He twisted Brenda's arm behind her back and pinned her to the ground.A pair of handcuffs clicked around her wrists.Just then, a phone slipped out of her loose sleeve. The screen was hot to the touch, and the live chat was still racing across it.[Why did the screen go black?
