Chapter 2

Author: Goodtale
When I heard Lydia claimed half the house belonged to her, my fingers tightened around the phone. "Did you ask for my permission before letting Evan move in?"

The other end went silent for a moment before she let out a cold laugh.

"So that's why you're making such a scene. This is all about Evan."

She spoke again, her tone clear.

"You're vicious, James. You went to all this trouble just to make things hard for a great medical researcher."

Vicious. Just because I hadn't died by their hands and had taken back what belonged to me, I was vicious.

I said nothing and hung up.

I went down into the garage and stopped in front of my parking space, but I found it empty.

I opened the location tracker on my phone. The brand-new BMW I had bought for seventy-two thousand dollars was in the next city.

That was Evan's hometown.

I didn't hesitate to mark the car as stolen in the app before calling the police.

The police moved faster than I expected. The car was driven back, and a young man got out of the driver's seat. It was Zack, Evan's brother.

He glared at me viciously, snarling, "My older brother gave me that car! Who do you think you are to call the police on me?"

Soon, hurried footsteps came from the entrance.

Evan rushed in wearing white and went straight to Zack as he choked out a sob. "Zack has never set foot in a police station, and now, you have him treated like a thief..."

Lydia came in behind him and grabbed my wrist without a second thought. "Apologize!"

I pulled free. "This is my car. You gave it to him without my permission."

"This is our car for the wedding!" Lydia snapped, cutting me off. "I have the right to give it to anyone!"

I picked up the car a month ago. She chose the model and the color, then I paid for it.

On the day it was registered, she took Evan out for a test drive while I sat alone at the Department of Motor Vehicles for three hours.

My chest tightened, and I said, "I paid for it in full."

Before I could finish, she slapped me. My head turned to the side from the force, and I froze.

I had known Lydia for a decade and dated her for five years. Before Evan appeared, she would feel so guilty if she even spoke to me a little too harshly that she couldn't sleep.

Now, she had slapped me in front of a room full of people for another man.

Lydia's fingertips trembled. She stepped forward by instinct, but Evan immediately let out another sob.

She stopped, and the coldness returned to her face.

"James, every single word from you is about money now. You're full of greed. You disappoint me! That slap was a lesson. From now on, don't embarrass me by arguing about money in front of outsiders."

I touched my face. "We don't have a future."

I didn't cry or throw a tantrum. Instead, I followed police procedure, signed every document, and closed the case.

When I walked out of the mediation room, a hand grabbed my wrist.

Lydia's tone softened. "I booked a restaurant. You have low blood sugar, and you can't go hungry."

I stopped.

Her voice stayed gentle. "Apologize to Evan at dinner, buy the house back, and let Zack drive the car. Listen to me, and we can still go back to before."

My hands slowly went cold as I pushed her hand away.

"Lydia, we can't go back to how we were."

She frowned, and I gave her a faint smile.

"I'm getting married."

I went to Evan and Lydia's trial. After the prosecutor finished reading the indictment, the gallery was so quiet that only the hum of the air conditioning remained. The evidence was presented one piece at a time. The smart home operation logs, the door lock commands during the incident, and the timestamp showing when the gas valve was opened remotely. There was also the recording of the call Lydia made to me on the day I was admitted to the ICU."Couldn't you have held on a little longer? Who gave you permission to run?! We were even going to ignite the gas and see what would happen."The recording echoed through the courtroom.Lydia sat in the defendant's seat with her head lowered, her expression unreadable.Evan's defense attorney tried to push all responsibility onto her, claiming she had operated the remote controls. She was the one who had locked the doors and windows, while Evan had only given her the idea. The prosecutor brought up their chat records in court. They had

The next morning, someone stopped Lydia downstairs. The hotel lobby manager wore a smile and held a paper envelope in his hand."Ms. Shaw, Mr. Gomez didn't pay for the bill. Since it was signed under your name, you'll need to settle it."Twenty-seven thousand one-hundred and thirty dollars.Lydia stared at the signature on the bill. She took out her phone and checked her banking app. Her personal checking account and her credit account could pay for no more than three thousand dollars. The manager's smile remained, but his gaze had already changed. "Will you be paying by card or bank transfer?"Lydia asked him to give her a minute as she called Evan. The phone rang for a long time before he picked up. Lydia asked, "Evan, how much is still left of the money you took from me earlier?"Evan stammered on the other end. "It all went into the experiment..."Lydia hung up. She tried to discuss installments with the manager. Finally, the manager stopped smiling. "Ms. Shaw, this is t

Ada turned off the engine of her vehicle at the entrance to the clerk's office. She kept both hands on the steering wheel, but she was in no hurry to get out. "Your judgment really is so, so terrible."I froze for a moment.Half a month ago, I had been happily preparing to get engaged to Lydia. I sent out the invitations, chose the hotel, and tried on suits... I was so busy, just like a headless chicken. One night, I received a text from an unfamiliar number.[Your judgment is so, so terrible. Are you sure you want to get married?]I looked at the number for a long time before remembering whose it was. I was so angry that I blocked it at once. Then, I turned to look at her.Ada suddenly held my forearm. "Do you regret it?"The question came without warning.I looked into her eyes. There was no inquisitiveness in them, no teasing; only a rare, almost cautious seriousness. The girl who had fought me over candy when we were children and blocked my doorway, refusing to leave unt

The crystal chandelier in the hotel lobby was bright enough to sting one's eyes. After a long moment, Lydia's mouth turned into a mocking smile. "James, you really outdid yourself this time around."She shook her head, her tone full of disdainful pity. "You even hired actors just to get me to react. How long did you rehearse all of this?"Evan stood beside her and gently placed his hand on Lydia's arm. The look he gave me was cold, distant, and almost pitiful."I saw through him from the very start," he said, his voice gentle. "James hired someone to put on this show because he wants to force you to give in. I know people like him best. They feel insecure, so they use stunts like this to prove how important they are to you."Lydia seemed to take that as proof, and her back straightened even more. She raised a hand and pointed at Ada behind me, her tone as certain as a verdict. "James, this act won't work on me. How many times have you threatened to break up with me over the year

My eyes went red as I listened to Evan. My parents' deaths were the one thing I could never get over.I stared at Lydia, but her expression was cold and calm. "Evan isn't an outsider. There's nothing in my life that he doesn't have a right to know."She paused. "You insisted on making a scene. Evan only blurted it out in public because he was defending me. In the end, this is your fault."A desperate despair made my whole body tremble. I forced down the anger that was close to breaking loose and enunciated each word. "Lydia, we can still end this without making enemies of each other. I've never done anything to hurt you..."Lydia cut me off. "You have mental issues. Who knows if it's true that you've never wronged me? After your parents died, you took over all their assets. For all we know, you arranged that robbery yourself! Someone like you wouldn't even spare your own parents. Who would believe you?"My ears rang.I rushed forward, but a hotel security guard grabbed my

The air went still for a moment.Lydia let out a relieved sigh and laughed."I know you're in a hurry to get married." She nodded to herself before continuing. "But if Evan is upset, I won't agree to the wedding. Your priority right now is making Evan happy."Evan walked over and looked at me with a cold, distant gaze. "James, I know you're desperate to get married, but you don't need to come after me. I'm different from you. I have my own goals. My mind isn't filled with love and romance all the time."After a pause, he sighed. "Forget it. You wouldn't understand even if I explained it. You don't need to apologize. Come with us to the DMV now and transfer the car to my brother's name, so he won't feel awkward driving it later."I stopped listening and walked away.Their angry shouts followed me, but I pretended not to hear any of it.-After that, I rented a small apartment for myself.I had just laid myself down when a call came in. It was from the nursing home in Easton
