Chapter 1

Author: Goodtale
"A villa in Riverview Isle worth a million and two-hundred dollars. Wedding gift from my side," Ada Sutton's voice came through the phone, cool and distant as always.

I hummed once and hung up. Not long later, a notification from the bank came in.

Three-hundred and seventy-eight thousand dollars had just been received.

I looked up and smiled politely at the buyer. "I had already reset the password for the lock on the door. Six zeroes."

After leaving the agency, I walked toward the underground parking garage. It was at this time that my phone rang.

Lydia Shaw's voice was cold as she said, "You staged the whole thing so good this time. You even hired an actor."

I opened my mouth wanting to say something, but she cut me off.

"Do you think pretending to sell the house will scare me? Too bad. You miscalculated."

There was no debating with her.

"Tell your people to leave right now, then come apologize to Evan. He's angry," she went on.

Angry.

I remembered lying in the ICU as the doctor told me I had almost suffered brain death. I had almost died, but all Evan Smith had to go through was anger.

"I sold the house." My voice was so flat it sounded strange even to me. "Move out soon. Don't force the new owner to call the police."

The other end of the line went quiet.

Then, Lydia lost patience. "Enough! Take this act too far, and no one will come to comfort you anymore. Who do you think you are, Evan?"

The more she spoke, the louder she became.

"Evan's only using the house for a while! It's for a medical experiment. He has ideals and ambition, unlike you. All you do all day is get jealous. You're petty, and you embarrass me."

I laughed suddenly. "Right, of course. A medical experiment. Discuss with the new owner and see if they agree."

After saying that, I hung up. Lydia's name flashed on the screen again less than a minute later.

Her tone had changed. "You really sold it?"

I held the phone tight.

"I paid 420 thousand cash for the house, and the renovations cost another hundred and fifty thousand. I listed it for four-hundred thousand dollars, and the final sale price was three-hundred and seventy-eight thousand dollars."

I spoke every number clearly.

"The money is already in my account, and I've signed all the paperwork. The title has already been transferred as well."

The silence on the other end was deafening. After a long moment, she forced out each word as she gritted her teeth.

"James, are you insane?! That was our future home!"

"I bought it. I paid for it myself," I said.

She cut me off. "So what? You bought it so you could marry me! That was our future home. Half of it belongs to me. What gave you the right to sell it without my permission?!"

I went to Evan and Lydia's trial. After the prosecutor finished reading the indictment, the gallery was so quiet that only the hum of the air conditioning remained. The evidence was presented one piece at a time. The smart home operation logs, the door lock commands during the incident, and the timestamp showing when the gas valve was opened remotely. There was also the recording of the call Lydia made to me on the day I was admitted to the ICU."Couldn't you have held on a little longer? Who gave you permission to run?! We were even going to ignite the gas and see what would happen."The recording echoed through the courtroom.Lydia sat in the defendant's seat with her head lowered, her expression unreadable.Evan's defense attorney tried to push all responsibility onto her, claiming she had operated the remote controls. She was the one who had locked the doors and windows, while Evan had only given her the idea. The prosecutor brought up their chat records in court. They had

The next morning, someone stopped Lydia downstairs. The hotel lobby manager wore a smile and held a paper envelope in his hand."Ms. Shaw, Mr. Gomez didn't pay for the bill. Since it was signed under your name, you'll need to settle it."Twenty-seven thousand one-hundred and thirty dollars.Lydia stared at the signature on the bill. She took out her phone and checked her banking app. Her personal checking account and her credit account could pay for no more than three thousand dollars. The manager's smile remained, but his gaze had already changed. "Will you be paying by card or bank transfer?"Lydia asked him to give her a minute as she called Evan. The phone rang for a long time before he picked up. Lydia asked, "Evan, how much is still left of the money you took from me earlier?"Evan stammered on the other end. "It all went into the experiment..."Lydia hung up. She tried to discuss installments with the manager. Finally, the manager stopped smiling. "Ms. Shaw, this is t

Ada turned off the engine of her vehicle at the entrance to the clerk's office. She kept both hands on the steering wheel, but she was in no hurry to get out. "Your judgment really is so, so terrible."I froze for a moment.Half a month ago, I had been happily preparing to get engaged to Lydia. I sent out the invitations, chose the hotel, and tried on suits... I was so busy, just like a headless chicken. One night, I received a text from an unfamiliar number.[Your judgment is so, so terrible. Are you sure you want to get married?]I looked at the number for a long time before remembering whose it was. I was so angry that I blocked it at once. Then, I turned to look at her.Ada suddenly held my forearm. "Do you regret it?"The question came without warning.I looked into her eyes. There was no inquisitiveness in them, no teasing; only a rare, almost cautious seriousness. The girl who had fought me over candy when we were children and blocked my doorway, refusing to leave unt

The crystal chandelier in the hotel lobby was bright enough to sting one's eyes. After a long moment, Lydia's mouth turned into a mocking smile. "James, you really outdid yourself this time around."She shook her head, her tone full of disdainful pity. "You even hired actors just to get me to react. How long did you rehearse all of this?"Evan stood beside her and gently placed his hand on Lydia's arm. The look he gave me was cold, distant, and almost pitiful."I saw through him from the very start," he said, his voice gentle. "James hired someone to put on this show because he wants to force you to give in. I know people like him best. They feel insecure, so they use stunts like this to prove how important they are to you."Lydia seemed to take that as proof, and her back straightened even more. She raised a hand and pointed at Ada behind me, her tone as certain as a verdict. "James, this act won't work on me. How many times have you threatened to break up with me over the year

My eyes went red as I listened to Evan. My parents' deaths were the one thing I could never get over.I stared at Lydia, but her expression was cold and calm. "Evan isn't an outsider. There's nothing in my life that he doesn't have a right to know."She paused. "You insisted on making a scene. Evan only blurted it out in public because he was defending me. In the end, this is your fault."A desperate despair made my whole body tremble. I forced down the anger that was close to breaking loose and enunciated each word. "Lydia, we can still end this without making enemies of each other. I've never done anything to hurt you..."Lydia cut me off. "You have mental issues. Who knows if it's true that you've never wronged me? After your parents died, you took over all their assets. For all we know, you arranged that robbery yourself! Someone like you wouldn't even spare your own parents. Who would believe you?"My ears rang.I rushed forward, but a hotel security guard grabbed my

The air went still for a moment.Lydia let out a relieved sigh and laughed."I know you're in a hurry to get married." She nodded to herself before continuing. "But if Evan is upset, I won't agree to the wedding. Your priority right now is making Evan happy."Evan walked over and looked at me with a cold, distant gaze. "James, I know you're desperate to get married, but you don't need to come after me. I'm different from you. I have my own goals. My mind isn't filled with love and romance all the time."After a pause, he sighed. "Forget it. You wouldn't understand even if I explained it. You don't need to apologize. Come with us to the DMV now and transfer the car to my brother's name, so he won't feel awkward driving it later."I stopped listening and walked away.Their angry shouts followed me, but I pretended not to hear any of it.-After that, I rented a small apartment for myself.I had just laid myself down when a call came in. It was from the nursing home in Easton
