Chapter 4

Author: Goodtale
My eyes went red as I listened to Evan. My parents' deaths were the one thing I could never get over.

I stared at Lydia, but her expression was cold and calm.

"Evan isn't an outsider. There's nothing in my life that he doesn't have a right to know."

She paused.

"You insisted on making a scene. Evan only blurted it out in public because he was defending me. In the end, this is your fault."

A desperate despair made my whole body tremble. I forced down the anger that was close to breaking loose and enunciated each word.

"Lydia, we can still end this without making enemies of each other. I've never done anything to hurt you..."

Lydia cut me off.

"You have mental issues. Who knows if it's true that you've never wronged me? After your parents died, you took over all their assets. For all we know, you arranged that robbery yourself! Someone like you wouldn't even spare your own parents. Who would believe you?"

My ears rang.

I rushed forward, but a hotel security guard grabbed my arm, his tone impatient. "Sir, please calm down. This isn't the place for you to lose control!"

Evan frowned. "James, did I hit a nerve?"

Just then, a wheelchair rolled in from the hotel entrance. Lydia's mother was pushed in by several of Lydia's relatives. She didn't even glance at me before taking Lydia's face in her hands with concern.

Lydia froze. "Mom, why are you here? Didn't you have care services today?"

Her mother's voice was cold as iron. "Someone cut off the nursing home payments. I was kicked out. What care services would I still have?"

Lydia raised her head and glared at me.

The fury in her eyes almost spilled over as she screamed at me. "James, I can tolerate any tantrum you throw, but you should never have hurt my mother! If you act like this, I really will get angry!"

Her mother gave a cold laugh.

"He hasn't even married with you yet, and he's already bullying his future mother-in-law. Just because he has some money, he thinks he can throw his weight around in our family."

She slammed the armrest and said with righteous anger, "I'm still alive!"

Several of Lydia's relatives stood in a row, staring at me coldly.

"This is why it's important to have parents. What kind of upbringing is this? He doesn't even know how to honor his future mother-in-law."

"He wants to hit Lydia in front of us over just a few words. Who knows what he does in private? What a disgusting domestic abuser!"

"Lydia, think this through. You can't let him marry you so easily."

Lydia took a deep breath and turned to look at me.

"James, you really went too far this time." She held out her hand as if giving me one last chance. "Now, apologize and pay."

I took a step back and stared at her. "No."

Lydia's expression darkened completely. "If you keep being stubborn, it won't be my fault if things get harsh."

Evan clicked his tongue softly. "Lydia, why waste your breath on him? You're his fiancee. His money is practically yours."

As soon as he finished speaking, he reached out to snatch my phone. I moved, but Lydia stepped forward and grabbed my arm. Evan seized the chance to take my phone, held it up to my face to unlock it, and moved his fingers quickly across the screen.

Just then, a rush of footsteps came from the hotel's main entrance. More than twenty men in suits walked in and quickly blocked every exit.

The hotel manager hurried forward. "Who are you people? We don't allow..."

The leader took out an ID card and flashed it in front of him.

The manager's expression changed at once. He stepped back and lowered his head. He didn't dare raise his head again.

Members of Lydia's family were all stunned.

Lydia was forced to let go as she watched as the bodyguards moved in to protect me behind them. "Who are you? Why are you interfering in my family matters? He's my fiance..."

As soon as she finished speaking, the sound of an engine shut down came from outside.

A discreet black luxury van stopped. The door opened, and a woman in a white dress tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear before walking in without looking around. She stopped in front of me, raised her head, and smiled faintly.

"Didn't you say you were going to get a marriage certificate with me, you big liar? Why are you still standing here?"

Lydia's expression turned to shock as panic rose in front of her uncontrollably. "What marriage certificate?"

I gently took Ada's hand.

The moment I pulled Ada into my arms, Lydia's face twisted with rage.

I went to Evan and Lydia's trial. After the prosecutor finished reading the indictment, the gallery was so quiet that only the hum of the air conditioning remained. The evidence was presented one piece at a time. The smart home operation logs, the door lock commands during the incident, and the timestamp showing when the gas valve was opened remotely. There was also the recording of the call Lydia made to me on the day I was admitted to the ICU."Couldn't you have held on a little longer? Who gave you permission to run?! We were even going to ignite the gas and see what would happen."The recording echoed through the courtroom.Lydia sat in the defendant's seat with her head lowered, her expression unreadable.Evan's defense attorney tried to push all responsibility onto her, claiming she had operated the remote controls. She was the one who had locked the doors and windows, while Evan had only given her the idea. The prosecutor brought up their chat records in court. They had

The next morning, someone stopped Lydia downstairs. The hotel lobby manager wore a smile and held a paper envelope in his hand."Ms. Shaw, Mr. Gomez didn't pay for the bill. Since it was signed under your name, you'll need to settle it."Twenty-seven thousand one-hundred and thirty dollars.Lydia stared at the signature on the bill. She took out her phone and checked her banking app. Her personal checking account and her credit account could pay for no more than three thousand dollars. The manager's smile remained, but his gaze had already changed. "Will you be paying by card or bank transfer?"Lydia asked him to give her a minute as she called Evan. The phone rang for a long time before he picked up. Lydia asked, "Evan, how much is still left of the money you took from me earlier?"Evan stammered on the other end. "It all went into the experiment..."Lydia hung up. She tried to discuss installments with the manager. Finally, the manager stopped smiling. "Ms. Shaw, this is t

Ada turned off the engine of her vehicle at the entrance to the clerk's office. She kept both hands on the steering wheel, but she was in no hurry to get out. "Your judgment really is so, so terrible."I froze for a moment.Half a month ago, I had been happily preparing to get engaged to Lydia. I sent out the invitations, chose the hotel, and tried on suits... I was so busy, just like a headless chicken. One night, I received a text from an unfamiliar number.[Your judgment is so, so terrible. Are you sure you want to get married?]I looked at the number for a long time before remembering whose it was. I was so angry that I blocked it at once. Then, I turned to look at her.Ada suddenly held my forearm. "Do you regret it?"The question came without warning.I looked into her eyes. There was no inquisitiveness in them, no teasing; only a rare, almost cautious seriousness. The girl who had fought me over candy when we were children and blocked my doorway, refusing to leave unt

The crystal chandelier in the hotel lobby was bright enough to sting one's eyes. After a long moment, Lydia's mouth turned into a mocking smile. "James, you really outdid yourself this time around."She shook her head, her tone full of disdainful pity. "You even hired actors just to get me to react. How long did you rehearse all of this?"Evan stood beside her and gently placed his hand on Lydia's arm. The look he gave me was cold, distant, and almost pitiful."I saw through him from the very start," he said, his voice gentle. "James hired someone to put on this show because he wants to force you to give in. I know people like him best. They feel insecure, so they use stunts like this to prove how important they are to you."Lydia seemed to take that as proof, and her back straightened even more. She raised a hand and pointed at Ada behind me, her tone as certain as a verdict. "James, this act won't work on me. How many times have you threatened to break up with me over the year

The air went still for a moment.Lydia let out a relieved sigh and laughed."I know you're in a hurry to get married." She nodded to herself before continuing. "But if Evan is upset, I won't agree to the wedding. Your priority right now is making Evan happy."Evan walked over and looked at me with a cold, distant gaze. "James, I know you're desperate to get married, but you don't need to come after me. I'm different from you. I have my own goals. My mind isn't filled with love and romance all the time."After a pause, he sighed. "Forget it. You wouldn't understand even if I explained it. You don't need to apologize. Come with us to the DMV now and transfer the car to my brother's name, so he won't feel awkward driving it later."I stopped listening and walked away.Their angry shouts followed me, but I pretended not to hear any of it.-After that, I rented a small apartment for myself.I had just laid myself down when a call came in. It was from the nursing home in Easton
