Chapter 2

Author: Disaster
The train shot down the tracks.

I'd be home in 30 minutes—three hours earlier than in my past life.

Staring out the window, I swore to myself over and over that I would drag Lisa and Ariah back from the brink of hell this time.

Right then, my phone screen lit up.

It was Lisa. "Honey, Aunt Caitlin's back from buying groceries. She's knocking at the door. Should I let her in?"

I snapped upright. The word "yes" was already on the tip of my tongue, but memories of my past life flashed through my mind.

Back then, Lisa met a horrific end, and Caitlin Booth was left unconscious on the floor, bleeding from a severe head wound.

When she woke up in the ICU, she fell to her knees in tears, apologizing and sobbing that she was useless for failing to stop the intruders.

Caitlin was Lisa's aunt. She'd spent her life in the countryside before moving to the city a year ago to work as a nanny. When Lisa got pregnant, Caitlin suggested hiring her after Ariah was born.

Lisa agreed. After all, they were family. So once Ariah arrived, Caitlin quit her job and moved straight in.

She was always hardworking and attentive, taking excellent care of Ariah and looking out for Lisa, too.

I couldn't bring myself to blame her for anything. Even though she was the sole survivor, she'd been critically injured, and she was the one who called the police. In my past life, I had never doubted her for a second.

But things were different now. I'd been reborn.

I had to be careful. I couldn't fully trust anyone.

Just thinking about the torture Lisa endured and three-month-old Ariah turning blue made my blood boil.

I clenched my fists until my knuckles cracked, my fingernails digging deep into my palms.

"Honey? Are you there?"

Lisa's voice pulled me back to reality.

I cut her off sharply, "Don't open it! Wait until I get there. I'm almost home!"

Lisa sounded completely lost. "Is that really okay? She's crying out there."

A flash of ruthless resolve crossed my eyes. "Turn on the door camera and check if anyone else is out there."

The line went quiet for a few seconds before Lisa spoke up, hesitant. "It's just Aunt Caitlin. She's crying, saying her hands are full of bags and asking why I locked her out."

I locked my eyes on the clock in the train car. "Look through the peephole."

Lisa did as she was told.

On the video feed, I watched her lean close to the door.

A second later, her face twisted in terror, and she whirled around, clapping a hand over her mouth.

"What is it?" I almost flew out of my seat.

Lisa gripped her phone, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "Honey, there's someone standing next to Aunt Caitlin. I can only see an arm, but… I think it's a man."

Shaun spun his juice glass around, avoiding my eyes as he grumbled softly, "How many times do I have to tell you? We're friends."Leon raised his eyes to glance at me, giving a firm nod without saying a word.I lowered my head, trying to suppress the heat swelling in my eyes, but I couldn't hold it back. A single tear quietly rolled down the corner of my eye and dripped onto the tablecloth.Lisa reached across the table, placing her warm palm over the back of my hand.I turned my hand over and squeezed hers tight.Outside the window, cars flowed steadily along the street.Laughter burst from the table next to us, while Leon began snatching shrimp straight off Shaun's plate. Holding his plate single-handedly, Shaun bumped him with his shoulder, the two of them jostling together in a lively mess.As I looked at the scene around the table, a sting remained in my eyes, but a smile slowly curved up the corners of my lips.It felt so good to be alive. The days that followed passed p

When we stepped out of the courthouse, we were hit by the blazing sun.Lisa raised her head, squinting into the sun as if trying to bake away every drop of darkness that had accumulated under her skin over the past two weeks.Standing beside her and watching her, I felt an indescribable warmth. It was a slow, steady warmth, like taking a sip of hot soup that warmed me all the way down to my stomach."Let's go." Lisa turned around, smiling at me. "Let's head back early to pick up Ariah."We didn't return to our old apartment. Before the sentencing, I had put it up for sale and picked an apartment with better lighting on a higher floor in a new neighborhood. I completely scrapped the old interior design, remodeling the place into the exact style Lisa had always dreamed of but felt was too much hassle to realize. On the day we moved into the new home, Lisa held Ariah in the middle of the living room, slowly spinning around as her eyes lit up."How is this exactly like what I had

Caitlin finally talked. The moment she gave up Braden's name, her lips trembled nonstop, and tears fell in an endless stream. It was as if she were dumping out years of buried baggage all at once. She looked lighter, yet entirely hollowed out.The police compiled the information and searched the orphanage archives overnight. The case moved forward much faster than I had anticipated. With a clear image of him from the hidden cameras and a solid lead on his identity, the airtight chain of evidence began to unravel. The officers said Braden had never been caught before because he always sent Caitlin to do the work in advance, never leaving a trace of himself at the scene.Caitlin was responsible for scouting the location, opening the door, and handling backup. Braden was only responsible for going in, getting the loot, and vanishing. That was why even when victims reported past break-ins, following the trail to the end only led back to Caitlin and never to him.But this time was d

On the third day, Caitlin was awake. I stepped through that door once again. This time, I didn't bring the police.I sat in the chair beside her bed, watching her in silence. Her complexion looked slightly better than it did two days ago, yet she still refused to look at me. Her gaze was glued to the bleak, gray sky outside the window. She looked resigned to her fate.I didn't beat around the bush and got straight to the point. "Caitlin, the person you're trying to protect almost killed you."Her eyelids twitched violently.I continued, "You shielded him, lied to Lisa, lied to me, lied to an innocent baby, and got stabbed twice for your trouble."Caitlin's lips moved slightly, but no sound came out."He didn't need to know anything about our home, but you willingly gave him all the details. You scoped out the security cameras for him and opened the door to let him in."I paused. "Has Lisa been good to you?"She closed her eyes."Before I left for my trip, she transferred ext

The next day, Caitlin woke up.The police officer contacted me to ask if I wanted to go inside with them.I followed the officer into the small private room in the ICU.Caitlin was huddled under the white bedsheet, her lips cracked with fine bleeding cuts. She had suffered two stab wounds—one in the left abdomen and another grazing her shoulder blade. The doctor said it was less than an inch away from puncturing her lung. When Caitlin saw me, she turned her face away, staring fixedly at the wall. The young officer spoke up from beside the bed. "Ms. Caitlin Booth, you are currently a criminal suspect, and you have a legal obligation to tell the truth. Cooperating with the investigation can help you get a lenient sentence. Who was that man yesterday, and what is your relationship with him?"Caitlin's throat twitched, but she didn't utter a word."You've already done enough for him," the officer said calmly.Caitlin's fingers tightened slightly, clutching a corner of the bedsheet

I stared up at a stark white ceiling. The sharp smell of antiseptic filled the air. Someone was crying softly, stifling their sobs.I blinked hard several times as my blurry vision slowly pulled into focus."Lisa," I called out.Lisa's crying abruptly stopped. She lowered her head, and a warm tear splashed onto the back of my hand, sending a sudden jolt through me."Honey, I'm here."I tried to move, but it felt as though my entire body was nailed down to the hospital bed. I felt nothing from the neck down.Gritting my teeth, I squeezed out a raspy voice. "How's Ariah?"Lisa covered her mouth with her hand. Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably as she nodded frantically at me. "She's fine. She was a bit low on oxygen, but the doctor said she's recovered completely. She's fast asleep right now."I closed my eyes. The burning weight choking my chest for so long shattered into pieces at that very moment."How's Shaun?" I asked.Leon, who was sitting on the other side of
