Liam was a lot of nasty things, but one thing he never did during our marriage was raise his hand against me. He was a devil, sure… but not a wife beater. His tongue was sharp enough to do the dirty work on its own.

“That’s not true,” I snapped. “My babies are alive. They’re not dead! And Liam never hit me, not once!”

Nancy only blinked at me, then patted my arm like I was a lost child. “Of course, dear. You take care.”

Her pity clung to my skin like dirt.

A few blocks down, Mr. Evans from the hardware store stopped me. His weathered face was lined with concern, but his words stabbed just as deep as hers.

“Heard about your loss, Olivia. Tough break. Your folks said you… kinda lost it after.” He sighed softly, then his voice dropped lower. “Don’t worry, you’ll heal up quicker than you think. My wife and I did, back in the ’80s, when we lost our firstborn girl right after birth. What matters now is finding a decent man, not chasing junkies.”

“My babies aren’t dead!” The words ripped out
