Jenny’s POV

“Let me walk you home."

I froze, my fingers clutching the strap of my worn-out backpack. Rex stood there, hands casually shoved into his pockets, looking at me as if he hadn’t just turned my world upside down with a simple request.

“What?” I stammered, glancing around nervously.

“I said,” he repeated, his lips twitching into that infuriatingly confident smirk, “let me walk you home, Jenny.”

“Why?” I asked, more defensive than I meant to be.

He shrugged, his smirk softening into something almost sweet. “Because I want to.”

It became our routine after that. Every day, Rex would wait for me by the school gates, ignoring the whispers and stares from our classmates. He didn’t seem to care about the rumours and the way people nudged each other when they saw us together.

At first, I tried to refuse him. “You don’t have to do this,” I told him one afternoon as we walked down the quiet streets leading to Aunt Lucy’s house.

“I know,” he said simply. “But I want to.”

There was something about the way he said it, something that made me stop questioning his intentions. And as the days turned into weeks, I found myself looking forward to those walks. They were the only moments in my day that felt light, free of judgment or fear.

On Thursday, as we reached the corner near my house, Rex stopped abruptly.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, confused.

He looked at me, his expression unusually serious. “I was thinking… what if we made this more than just walks home?”

I blinked at him. “More?”

“Yeah,” he said, a teasing smile creeping onto his face. “Like, a date. You and me. Ice cream. After school tomorrow.”

My heart skipped a beat. “You’re asking me out?”

“That depends,” he said, stepping closer. “Are you saying yes?”

I couldn’t stop the smile that spread across my face. “I guess I am.”

The next day, I found myself nervously adjusting my hair in the bathroom mirror, debating whether or not to wear lip gloss. It wasn’t a formal date—just ice cream—but it felt monumental.

Rex showed up at the shop exactly on time, looking effortlessly cool in a plain black t-shirt and jeans. He greeted me with a crooked grin and a casual, “You look nice.”

The date itself was simple, but it was perfect. We talked about everything and nothing, laughing over melting ice cream and teasing each other about the ridiculous fflavourswe’d chosen. For the first time in years, I felt like a normal teenager.

As we walked back to my house, the air between us grew quiet, charged with something unspoken.

“Jenny,” Rex said suddenly, stopping in his tracks.

I turned to face him. “Yeah?”

He hesitated, looking almost… nervous. It was such a rare sight that I almost laughed, but then he reached for my hand, his fingers brushing against mine.

“I like you,” he said, his voice low but steady. “I mean, really like you. And I’m done pretending I don’t.”

My breath caught. I’d dreamed of hearing those words, but now that they were here, I didn’t know what to say.

“I… I like you too,” I admitted, my cheeks heating.

His smile widened, and for a moment, he looked like a little boy who’d just won his favourite toy. “Good. Because I was going to ask you to be my girlfriend.”

I stared at him, my heart pounding. “You’re serious?”

“Dead serious,” he said, his tone leaving no room for doubt.

And just like that, my world shifted.

Dating Rex was like stepping into a whirlwind. He didn’t believe in half-measures or subtlety, and he made sure everyone at school knew we were together.

“Rexford Blankson and Jenny Walker? Never saw that coming,” I overheard someone whisper in the hallway.

“They’re so cute together,” Vanessa gushed during lunch. “I mean, you’re like Beauty and the Beast, but in a good way.”

Despite the attention, Rex remained protective of me. He’d walk me to class, carry my books, and glare at anyone who so much looked at me the wrong way.

But while school felt like a dream, home was still a nightmare.

Aunt Lucy didn’t know about Rex, and I intended to keep it that way. She would never approve, not that she cared much about my life outside of cleaning and cooking.

One evening, after a particularly gruelling day, I vented to Vanessa over the phone.

“All am waiting for is my scholarship to the university, so that I can get out of here.” I admitted, my voice thick with emotion. “If I didn’t need to graduate, I wouldn’t stay here another second.”

“Jenny…” Vanessa began, but I cut her off.

“I just want to remain invisible,” I said. “It’s easier that way.”

But Rex made it impossible to be invisible.

One Monday morning, I found a single rose taped to my locker, along with a note in Rex’s messy handwriting: For the prettiest girl in school. Meet me by the bleachers after class.

The gesture made me smile, but it also made me nervous. Rex’s affection was overwhelming, and I wasn’t used to being the center of attention.

When I met him by the bleachers, he was waiting with his signature smirk.

“You liked the rose?” he asked, pulling me into his arms.

“It was sweet,” I admitted, resting my head against his chest.

“Good,” he said, pressing a kiss to my hair. “Because I’m not done spoiling you yet.”

As much as I wanted to enjoy the moment, a nagging voice in the back of my mind wouldn’t let me.

What happens when this ends?

Could I really trust Rex with my heart, knowing his reputation ?

Jenny’s POV The room was so silent after Rex’s words that I swore I could hear the beating of my own heart. “I am Rexford Jordan Knight… and the woman sitting there, Jenny Walker, is my fiancée.” His words still echoed in my head, like a bell that refused to stop ringing. Everyone stared at me. Some with wide eyes, some with tight lips, some with pity, and others with envy so sharp I could feel it piercing my skin. My throat was dry, but I sat perfectly still. Rex didn’t even flinch. His aura filled the room like a wall no one dared to break through. When he finally dismissed the meeting, people filed out with hushed murmurs. No one dared speak loudly, but their glances said enough. “She’s really the fiancée?” “So it’s true…” “No wonder Rachel Madison has been restless…” “But he looks serious, did you see his eyes?” I wanted to melt into the floor. Back in my office, I locked the door and sank into my chair. My phone buzzed like it had gone mad. Dozens of notifications—Twit

Jenny’s POVI should have hated him.Every fiber of my being screamed that I should still hate him for what he did all those years ago. For the humiliation, for the betrayal, for the moment my world crashed down in high school when I discovered the truth—that Rexford Jordan Knight, the boy I loved, the boy I trusted with every heartbeat, had made a bet with his friends to win my heart. And he won. He won me. He had me, completely, before I learned it was all a game. Except it wasn’t—not to him. Not fully. He had tried to explain, stumbling over words, swearing that he was already in love with me long before the bet, that he never wanted me to find out like that. But by then, I was broken. His words were knives and his love felt like poison. So I walked away. And I never wanted to see him again. Until now. Until this man standing in front of me—the same boy, yet so much more dangerous. Rexford Knight, the CEO, the mysterious J who had been lurking in my shadows for years, pro

Jenny’s POVThe internet was in flames.Every corner of it—blogs, tabloids, gossip accounts, even business forums—carried Rex’s name tied to mine. My face and my life story had become a headline overnight. The Madison family’s secrets weren’t whispered rumours anymore. There was evidence of Affairs and Forged wills. A fortune stolen through deceit. Their empire was crumbling in real time, and Rex was the one holding the match. And all of it was because of me.My fingers trembled as I scrolled through endless posts. Some called me the silent queen, praising me for standing beside him without saying a word. Strangers I didn’t know were writing essays about my dignity, my “strength.” Others painted me as a thief who ruined Rachel Madison’s life, a woman who had taken what didn’t belong to her.I didn’t feel like either. I wasn’t a queen, and I wasn’t a thief. My phone buzzed. Rex: Don’t leave the building. Paparazzi are waiting. Stay put.I stared at the text until the words blurred. He

The last thing I wanted was her getting caught in the middle of this circus.Minutes later, the Madison counterattack came.Their PR machine was brutal. Articles spread like wildfire:“Jenny Walker—the secretary who slept her way to the top.” “Was Rexford Knight manipulated by a social climber?” “Rachel Madison, the true victim of betrayal.”Anonymous accounts posted fabricated “proof”—edited pictures of Jenny with men she had never met, fake screenshots of conversations painting her as greedy and manipulative. Rex’s POVWhen the statement from the Madison family hit the news, I felt my blood boil. Two weeks to a wedding? A wedding that I never agreed to? A wedding they blackmailed me into? They thought I would stay silent.I grabbed my phone and dialled Charles Madison directly. He picked up after the third ring, his tone smug.“Rexford,” he said smoothly, “I assume you’ve seen the clarification. Don’t worry, we’ll handle the noise. Rachel will be your wife in two weeks, and everything will settle down.”I clenched my jaw, forcing my voice to stay calm. “Mr Madison, let’s make something clear. Whatever you and your family are doing—it ends today. My engagement to your daughter is over. Officially. There will be no wedding.”Silence. Then a sharp, mocking laugh. “Over? You think you can walk away that easily? Rexford, you owe us. Don’t forget who gave you leverage when your company needed political backing. Don’t forget the sacrifices we made. If you humiliate my daughter, you will pay dearl

Rachel’s POVI had never felt humiliation like this before. My face was everywhere. Every blog, every gossip page, every headline. Not because of my so-called “engagement” to Rex, but because of her. Jenny Walker. That nobody.I smashed my phone on the marble floor, my screams echoing through the mansion. My mother rushed into my room, followed closely by my father.“What is it this time, Rachel?” Father barked, clearly fed up with my tantrums.“What is it?” I snapped back, pointing at the TV mounted on my wall. “LOOK at it! The entire country is mocking me. Do you see this?”The news anchor’s voice filled the room:“Last night, Sterling Corporation’s CEO, Rexford Knight, appeared at the Imperial Gala with an unidentified woman. The chemistry between them has ignited social media, raising questions about his relationship with fiancée Rachel Madison…”I could hardly breathe as the clip replayed—Rex stepping out of the car, holding Jenny’s hand, guiding her into the ballroom as if she w
