I’m up on the balcony waiting for the car headlights to come down the estate's driveway telling me Connor has gotten home. I can feel my wolf Jace pacing inside me getting more frustrated at second ticks away on the clock.
Since I saw her last week, she has plagued my thoughts. Her flowing chestnut hair, sapphire blue eyes I got lost in, the pale silk-like skin I wanted to kiss all over, and curves that make me want to hold tight and never let go. Even the amount of disrespect in her attitude was amazing. The fire and passion in her words make me want to tame her more. Make her mine.
At 1 am I see the headlights so bolt down the stairs to meet him at the front door.
“How did it go”. I couldn’t contain myself and was talking as soon as Connor opened the door.
Connor can’t make eye contact with me as he talks and just stares at the ground. “Her friends seem nice, but she was furious. Sorry Alpha King but she won’t come”.
The noise woke my Beta Liam’s and his half asleep brain starts to slowly put things together. “What the hell did you do”.
“Nightstalker found her, so I sent Connor to make sure she is OK. She’s been living with humans since she was 13. Can you believe that”. I can’t help the pride in my voice that I found her after she escaped the hunters.
Liam’s face starts to go wide-eyed with frustration. “YOU SENT A HUNTER AFTER A ROGUE AND YOU'RE CONFUSED AT WHY SHE’S PISSED AT YOU”.
When he phrases it like that it does sound bad. It’s not how I intended it to come across. Surely, she can see that as she wasn’t attacked. Right.
I try to defend myself to Liam. “You know that’s not what I did. Connor was under strict orders not to harm her or her friends. Just ask for her to meet me. And that’s what you did right”.
I look over at Connor who is nodding but I can tell he is leaving something out. “What else did she say”.
He takes a deep sigh and avoids eye contact again. “She said she is fine on her own and if we ever go near her again, she will disappear again”.
My heart dropped. I start running my hands through my hair to calm myself down. Jace is howling inside me and I can feel my breathing increase and my heart beating in my throat. How did I screw up this badly? I just wanted to see her again.
Liam can sense my turmoil and starts planning to resolve the situation. “Alright. Everyone into the study so we can work out what to do next. And you”, pointing a finger straight into my face, “you are not to do anything regarding her before running it past me. This girl is under yours and Jace’s skin you’re not thinking rationally. You’re also clearly not going to move on without some sort of closure so for your own sanity you follow the plan we come up with. Understood”.
Liam my be my Beta and second in command but he's always been more of a brother and so I always value his advice and support. “Fine”, I growl back.
Liam looks at me, a mix of concern and confusion on his face. “What exactly is your end goal here”.
The words leave my mouth before I process their potential reactions. “Jace says she is my mate, so I want her as part of the pack and to be my Queen”.
The study door shuts behind us and Liam turns to me with a horrified look on his face. “Are you insane. You know the dangers that poses to every member of this pack. Rouges have a permanent ban from rejoining all packs for a reason”.
Connor instantly agrees. “I get that she’s powerful, but she kicked our asses in the raid, has avoided detection in the human world since she was a pup and tonight, managed to slice my arm with a concealed silver blade in a public setting without a single human noticing. You need to get over this obsession and leave her alone”.
I charge across the room and before I know it, I have my claws out and my hand around Connor’s throat pinning him against a wall. My eyes glow with Alpha energy and I stare at his fear in his.
In a low growl, I sneer at him. “NO. She belongs with me”.
I feel Liam come up to the side of me and gently place his hand on my arm as he tries to get me to loosen my grip on Connor. “It’s alright buddy. Connor didn’t mean any disrespect. Let him go and we can talk about what to do next”. He always calls me buddy when he doesn’t know if it’s me or Jace who has lost control.
I release Connor and he starts coughing as he moves away from me. I go and get a drink of whisky from my office stash to try and calm my nerves.
I hear Connor mutter under his breath to Liam, “Could she really be his mate”.
I skull back the whiskey and feel the burn go down to the emptiness since I lost her. “Jace is certain. She’s mine”.
I can hear the hesitation in Liam’s voice as he asks for clarification. “I get that you or Jace might like her, but I have never known anyone to have mate bond. The stories we were told as pups of the Moon Goddess curse to take them away was just a fairy tale. Right”.
Doesn’t matter if this bedtime story is true or not, I can’t leave her out there to fend for herself anymore. I want her to come home.
Lewana POVThe kitchen is silent for several minutes until Willow speaks. "So, what are your options?". I don't reply and keep staring deep in thought. Conrad is the one to reply to her. "Basically, we need to decide if we euthanise him". All the men nod in agreement, but their heads snap to Kimberly's sharp, disbelieving tone. "You're going to kill him because he's vulnerable and confused".Connor tries to calm Kimberly. "If he were tried for his crimes, he would be tried for treason, among other things, and the sentence for that is death". Kimberly looked horrified. "Wouldn't he be found not guilty due to manipulation or insanity or something?". I speak up as I can tell none of them understands. "That's not the problem, Kimberly. I'm not sure any of you understand the main problem here". Everyone stops and turns to me with a look of confusion. I try to explain. "Does anyone know where the word Lunatic comes from?". Willow, of course, knows the answer. "Yeah. They noticed c
Lewana POVI eventually got some control back from Serena. I used that energy to walk us straight into the private living room. To say I was mortified at her declaring herself the ultimate bridezilla was an understatement. Once the door is closed, I lay into her. "What the hell were you thinking, declaring us a bridezilla?". I could feel Serena roll her eyes at me. "So what if I did? We are awesome, have won a battle against the shadows, marked by our mate, and been accepted as Luna Queen. We should get everything we want". "I couldn't agree more". I jump at the voice. Conrad followed us down from the kitchen and was watching Serena and I argue with an amused smirk on his face. I cover my face with my hands and groan, and he walks over, chuckling, and pulls me into a hug. He lifts my chin up to meet his eyes and stares deeply and lovingly into them. "Lewana, what is it you want?". I don't even need to think about it. "A small ceremony with just the pack. Having it as quick as
Liam POVThe rollercoaster on the night of the battle was intense. Exilerating that we won against Malik. Devastation when we lost Lewana and Conrad to the Shadows. Then the hours of fear we had to survive without them before the moon had a chance to bring them back. Every guardian wanted to help and protect them, so we divided into two teams. Sirens and Faes during the day. Phoenix's and Wolves at night. We moved them to the Moon Garden that Conrad has constructed. We figured this would protect them the most. We placed them on a bed we brought outside and monitored them closely. The Sirens cleaned both of them, and the Faes placed flowers around them while tending to the garden, and the Phoenixs lit flame torches around them so they wouldn't be in darkness. It was awful seeing them in this state. Every vein was now black as they rested peacefully, but we just hoped they could save each other. We all waited on the night the moon rose. Neck craned towards the sky, waiting for her t
Conrad POVTime works strangely here. I haven't seen the sun or the moon, but there is still a form of day and night. As I entered from the real world at dawn, and it is now night, I hope this corresponds to the real world and that we only have to survive the day before the moon rises. Serena's light seems to have stabilized. It's no longer flickering, but it is still very dim. At least it's there. Lewana is curled up in my lap and snuggled against my chest. I make sure she is as comfortable as possible as I hold her, determined to not only fight the shadows that threaten her but also keep them from giving her more nightmares. It doesn't feel like an entire night has passed when it starts to get light again, but I'm relieved when it does. I know I have to survive with our girls, but I know if the shadows need to kill us, then today might be their last chance. Lewana starts to stir slowly in my arms, and Serena stirs in Jace's. Thankfully, they are still connected. I wonder if that
Conrad POVAs soon as all the visions disappeared, I started to try and come up with a plan. Serena is made of moonlight, which explains why she glows. That might be why the shadows separated her from Lewana. If they needed to kill the light, they would be after her. Jace was getting anxious and started whimpering while pacing back and forth. I could tell he was trying to use the bond to reach her, but there was no response. I started pacing and running my hands through my hair, trying to focus. "Are you angry because I did something wrong?". I look down at Lewana's big blue eyes staring at me with tears starting to form. I can't afford for her to cry again. "No, sweetie. I'm not angry. I'm worried. Jace is worried. You're safe with me, but we don't know where Serena is. I'm worried she's in danger". She seemed to think hard for a while. Her child-like face scrunches as she thinks. Goddess, I hope my daughter takes after her. "Maybe she's hiding. Arthur used to call out my nickn
Conrad POVWe exit the front door to the pack house and are met with a violent storm. The rain is hammering down hard, and the wind is ice cold with such force it feels like it's cutting through my skin. I turn to go back inside, but it's now an empty doorway in the midst of the storm. I look down at the terrified child clutching my leg, and instincts take over. I pick her up and cradle her to my chest to keep her as shielded as possible. I call out. "Jace, lead us somewhere with some shelter. I protect her". "What if Serena is out here?". I can sense his fear, but I need him to focus. "Then we will find her, but there will be no point if Lewana dies from exposure in the process". The fear doesn't subside, but he knows I'm right. He calls back to me. "There are trees over there. That will be our best bet at the moment". We trapse through the cold for what seems like an hour as the trembling little girls hold onto me tight. By the time we get to the trees, she is nearly blue, so
