Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Timon Azoulay
My room belonged to Seth now, so I could only stay in the tiny attic.

Sunlight didn't shine into the attic, and the window faced a wall.

At dinner, Dad meticulously sliced a piece of steak into bite-sized chunks and peeled the shrimps before placing them on Seth's plate. He looked up and glanced at me before saying, "Help yourself, Kevin. You can have whatever you want."

I lost my appetite when I realized that the dishes on the table were all of Seth's favorites.

I became slightly jealous of Seth, but what I really felt was envy. He had gained Mom's and Dad's affection without even needing to lift a finger.

Dad would stand next to him and smile when he played the piano, flipping the pages of the score for him.

When he came across a difficult question, Mom would drop what she was doing and patiently explain the solution to him.

Meanwhile, I lived as if I was walking on eggshells.

I didn't dare to make a sound while chewing my food. I would also adjust the volume to the lowest level when I was watching television.

I did everything that I could to be as quiet as possible, wanting to be accepted into the family again. But I realized that my efforts were futile no matter how hard I tried.

When Seth was practicing the cello in the living room, he hurled his bow to the floor in frustration when he couldn't play the song right after dozens of tries.

Instead of admonishing him, Dad gently comforted him.

I had just walked out of the kitchen, carrying a glass of water, when I accidentally tripped over my feet. The glass slipped from my grip, shattering into a million pieces on the floor.

The sharp sounds of breaking glass cut through the silence in the house.

Dad's expression twisted immediately. He pressed his fingers to his temple and let out a pained groan. "My head… It's starting to hurt again…"

Mom rushed into the living room. She shoved me aside and frantically supported Dad.

"What is wrong with you?" she snapped at me. "Why can't you just behave yourself? Do you have to make such a ruckus?"

The look in her eyes was identical to the way she looked at me when they sent me away at seven years old—cold and disdainful.

I felt unbearably cold when I saw the corners of Seth's lips curl up into a smile as he leaned against Dad's embrace.

I opened my mouth, wanting to explain that I hadn't broken the glass on purpose.

However, Seth beat me to it. His voice was thick with tears when he blubbered, "Did I disturb you when I was playing the cello, Kevin? Is that why you intentionally broke the glass to scare me?"

I looked at him in shock. I couldn't believe that a seven-year-old like Seth could twist the truth without so much as flinching.

"I didn't!" I exclaimed.

"How dare you try to deny the truth?" Mom roared. "Seth's so well-behaved. He would never lie! You must be too used to misbehaving during your time in the countryside. You have no manners at all! Go to your room! You're not allowed to come out without my permission!"

Tears welled up in my eyes. I couldn't say a single word to defend myself.

Mom had no idea that my time in the countryside had been the happiest days of my life.

Grandpa was nothing like Mom and Dad. He never complained about me being too noisy. He was always smiling when he watched me chase chickens and play with dogs in the garden, saying, "You're a young boy. Making a little noise just proves that you're healthy."

He would listen to my imaginative ramblings as he prepared steaming-hot baked potatoes for me. "You've got an active imagination, Kevin. You're definitely going to grow up to be someone impressive."

My time in the countryside made me feel like I wasn't a mistake for the first time in my life. However, there were also times when I missed Mom and Dad.

A year passed, but they still didn't take me home. I couldn't help myself and called them.

Mom sounded like she was very far away over the phone. "Be good, Kevin. Your father hasn't fully recovered from his illness yet. You'll have to wait another year."

They still didn't take me home even after six years had passed.

Dad was the one who picked up the phone that time. He sounded healthy, and his words were laced with gentleness. However, he wasn't speaking to me.

"Slow down, Seth. Be careful not to fall."

He then addressed me in a rush, asking, "Can you just… wait for a while more, Kevin? Okay?"

I stopped asking why.

I also stopped counting the days.

The next day, my lawyer and I showed up at Mom's room in the hospital."Kevin… W-What do you think you're doing?" Dad asked, staring at me in disbelief."Solving a problem," I answered.I gestured for my lawyer to hand a document to Dad before continuing, "This is a formal legal notice. I'm officially filing a lawsuit against you for abandonment and defamation.""Abandonment? When did we abandon you? We… We only did what we did for your sake!" Dad exclaimed."You lied to me when I was only a seven-year-old child and abandoned me in the countryside for six years. You didn't care for me at all and left me to fend for myself. You were only forced to take me home after Grandpa passed away. If that doesn't count as abandonment, I don't know what does."I looked at him coldly before continuing, "As for defamation, you spread countless baseless rumors about me in my university. Shall I invite all the witnesses here to vouch for me?""Monster! You're a monster!" Mom shrieked."Don't fo

Mom wailed even louder. She reached out and tried to pull me into her arms."I had no idea, Kevin," she blubbered, "I had no idea that you were telling the truth. I'm sorry… I'll never do it again."Dad was also filled with shame. He looked like he had more to say but couldn't find the right words."It's also our first time as parents, Kevin. We don't know a lot of things, which led us to neglect your feelings. Cut us some slack and give us another chance, okay?"I started laughing as I looked at them."Who's going to cut me some slack then? It's also my first time as your son. Who's going to empathize with the seven-year-old boy who had to fearfully traverse the village alleys by himself after his loved ones hung up on him?"Dad shamefully hung his head.Mom crumpled to the floor and let out a muffled but anguished cry."You should go," I said, averting my gaze. "My heart already died when I had to run away from Mr. William's house while crying by myself when I was eight."Af

I nearly didn't recognize Mom and Dad.They looked absolutely haggard, as if they had aged twenty years. Gone were the elegant and composed demeanors that they used to carry themselves with.Although only a few years had passed since I last saw them, it was as if time itself had created a vast distance between us.Mom and Dad were still stuck in the time when I was seven, while I had already walked forward into the future."Kevin," Dad called hoarsely. "Please come home with us, Kevin."I stood rooted to the spot and just looked at them coldly."Seth… He…"Mom opened her mouth, but she seemed too ashamed to speak. Finally, she let out a long sigh and said, "We were wrong, Kevin. We never should have adopted him. You're the good one. You're our wonderful son.""Your wonderful son?" I repeated, the corner of my lips twitching up into a smile. "But if I remember correctly, the two of you have always hated me."Mom's sobbing intensified at my frosty tone."Seth was lying to us th

Seth ran off to tattle on me to Mom and Dad, crying his eyes out.It didn't take long before my door was slammed open. Mom and Dad stood in the doorway, looking furious."Do you have to treat Seth this way, Kevin?" Dad demanded, looking at me in disappointment. "What did he ever do to you?""Your father's right!" Mom exclaimed while pointing at me. "We never should have given birth to you!"I numbly raised my head to look at them. In the reflections of their eyes, I could see how miserable I looked."Did you ever ask for my opinion when you gave birth to me?" I retorted. "You never cared for me, but you want me to shoulder all the pain and suffering.""What's with the attitude?" Dad demanded. "We're your parents! How dare you speak to us like that just because we criticized you?"The corners of my lips twitched up into a pitiful smile. "Oh, so you can feel hurt? I thought that your hearts were made of stone."I turned to stare at Mom. "You said that you never should have given

A hint of panic flickered across Mom's and Dad's faces.Mom immediately stepped forward, her voice dropping to a harsh hiss. "You're forbidden from bringing this up again! You won't breathe a word of this to anyone else. Do you hear me?"Dad tightened his grip on Seth as if he was afraid that I would snatch him away, staring at me with a complicated look in his eyes."It's true that we adopted Seth, but we loved him as if he was our flesh and blood from the moment he stepped through the door," he said.I couldn't help but feel how absurd the entire situation was.Although I was their biological son who had their blood flowing through my veins, they saw me as an eyesore and despised everything about me.Meanwhile, they treated Seth, who didn't share a single drop of blood with them, with endless patience and love.I was always under the impression that Seth was Mom's and Dad's biological son. I assumed that they had given birth to him after I utterly disappointed them because the

Mom and Dad stopped talking to me after our argument. However, I was glad for the peace and quiet. My heart was completely calm after I was utterly disappointed by our familial bond.…One afternoon, I was sitting on the windowsill in my room.Dad was patiently teaching Seth how to ride a bicycle in the garden. He held onto the backseat as he repeatedly encouraged Seth."You're amazing, Seth!" he shouted. "Don't be scared. I'm right behind you."I got lost in my memories as I watched them, thinking about when I was the same age as Seth.Mom wanted me to calm down, so she taught me cursive."A boy must be calm and composed. A person's handwriting reflects their character. Just look at your handwriting. It's so messy, just like you!"However, I couldn't sit still and spilled ink everywhere.Mom punished me countless times by striking me with a ruler. My palms were always red and swollen.Meanwhile, Seth only cycled two rounds around the garden before he pursed his lips and sai
