Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Timon Azoulay
Mom and Dad stopped talking to me after our argument.

However, I was glad for the peace and quiet. My heart was completely calm after I was utterly disappointed by our familial bond.

One afternoon, I was sitting on the windowsill in my room.

Dad was patiently teaching Seth how to ride a bicycle in the garden. He held onto the backseat as he repeatedly encouraged Seth.

"You're amazing, Seth!" he shouted. "Don't be scared. I'm right behind you."

I got lost in my memories as I watched them, thinking about when I was the same age as Seth.

Mom wanted me to calm down, so she taught me cursive.

"A boy must be calm and composed. A person's handwriting reflects their character. Just look at your handwriting. It's so messy, just like you!"

However, I couldn't sit still and spilled ink everywhere.

Mom punished me countless times by striking me with a ruler. My palms were always red and swollen.

Meanwhile, Seth only cycled two rounds around the garden before he pursed his lips and said coyly, "I'm tired, Dad. I want to play blocks."

"Alright then. Let's take a break since you're tired," Dad said, ruffling his hair with total adoration. "You don't have to force yourself if you're not interested."

Seth was the only one who could drop whatever he was learning simply because he wasn't interested.

Mom and Dad would do everything in their power to fulfill his wishes.

But what about me? Did they even think of me as their flesh and blood?

When I turned, I saw Seth behind me. He had come upstairs when I was distracted with my thoughts.

Seth stood at the door to my room, clutching a fruit knife in his hand. The corners of his lips were curled up into a twisted smile.

"How do you think Mom and Dad will react if I get hurt, Kevin?" he asked. "Why did you have to come back from the country? I worked so hard to be their son. What gives you the right to come back and ruin everything?"

A chill ran down my spine.

What was he implying?

Before I could react, Seth sliced the knife across his arm. Fresh blood poured from the cut in an instant.

I was frozen in place by the sudden and shocking sight. My mind had gone blank.

Seth didn't cry as he looked at his bloody arm. On the contrary, the smile on his face widened. He shot a strange look at me before letting out a bloodcurdling scream.

"Help me! Mom! Kevin's trying to kill me!"

Mom rushed to where we were and shoved me to the floor. She then carefully examined Seth's wound.

Dad's eyes reddened in an instant.

"It wasn't me!" I shouted at the top of my lungs, scrambling back up to my feet to explain myself. "He's the one who cut himself!"

"How dare you lie to our faces?" Dad roared, glaring at me fiercely. "Seth's only seven years old! Why would he hurt himself?"

"He's the one who… It was really him…" I stammered in a shaky voice.

However, no one believed me.

Seth pointed at me as he sobbed. He could barely string a sentence together as he stuttered, "He accused me of stealing the two of you away from him, Mom and Dad. He hates me…"

I was slapped hard across the face. My head snapped to the side from the force of the slap. My cheek stung painfully, and there was a loud buzzing in my ears.

It was the first time that Mom had raised her hand against me.

"We don't have a despicable son like you! We can't do anything now since your grandfather already raised you to be such a horrible person. Get out of our sight! We're going to send you to the orphanage!"

The orphanage.

Mom and Dad were planning to abandon me again.

They abandoned me in the countryside when I was seven years old because they thought that I was too noisy. Now, they were going to abandon me in an orphanage because they thought that I was despicable.

Despite how many years had passed, they were still the same.

I suddenly burst out laughing. I pointed at Seth, who was still crying in their arms, and asked, "The orphanage? Shouldn't he be the one to go back to that place?"

The next day, my lawyer and I showed up at Mom's room in the hospital."Kevin… W-What do you think you're doing?" Dad asked, staring at me in disbelief."Solving a problem," I answered.I gestured for my lawyer to hand a document to Dad before continuing, "This is a formal legal notice. I'm officially filing a lawsuit against you for abandonment and defamation.""Abandonment? When did we abandon you? We… We only did what we did for your sake!" Dad exclaimed."You lied to me when I was only a seven-year-old child and abandoned me in the countryside for six years. You didn't care for me at all and left me to fend for myself. You were only forced to take me home after Grandpa passed away. If that doesn't count as abandonment, I don't know what does."I looked at him coldly before continuing, "As for defamation, you spread countless baseless rumors about me in my university. Shall I invite all the witnesses here to vouch for me?""Monster! You're a monster!" Mom shrieked."Don't fo

Mom wailed even louder. She reached out and tried to pull me into her arms."I had no idea, Kevin," she blubbered, "I had no idea that you were telling the truth. I'm sorry… I'll never do it again."Dad was also filled with shame. He looked like he had more to say but couldn't find the right words."It's also our first time as parents, Kevin. We don't know a lot of things, which led us to neglect your feelings. Cut us some slack and give us another chance, okay?"I started laughing as I looked at them."Who's going to cut me some slack then? It's also my first time as your son. Who's going to empathize with the seven-year-old boy who had to fearfully traverse the village alleys by himself after his loved ones hung up on him?"Dad shamefully hung his head.Mom crumpled to the floor and let out a muffled but anguished cry."You should go," I said, averting my gaze. "My heart already died when I had to run away from Mr. William's house while crying by myself when I was eight."Af

I nearly didn't recognize Mom and Dad.They looked absolutely haggard, as if they had aged twenty years. Gone were the elegant and composed demeanors that they used to carry themselves with.Although only a few years had passed since I last saw them, it was as if time itself had created a vast distance between us.Mom and Dad were still stuck in the time when I was seven, while I had already walked forward into the future."Kevin," Dad called hoarsely. "Please come home with us, Kevin."I stood rooted to the spot and just looked at them coldly."Seth… He…"Mom opened her mouth, but she seemed too ashamed to speak. Finally, she let out a long sigh and said, "We were wrong, Kevin. We never should have adopted him. You're the good one. You're our wonderful son.""Your wonderful son?" I repeated, the corner of my lips twitching up into a smile. "But if I remember correctly, the two of you have always hated me."Mom's sobbing intensified at my frosty tone."Seth was lying to us th

Seth ran off to tattle on me to Mom and Dad, crying his eyes out.It didn't take long before my door was slammed open. Mom and Dad stood in the doorway, looking furious."Do you have to treat Seth this way, Kevin?" Dad demanded, looking at me in disappointment. "What did he ever do to you?""Your father's right!" Mom exclaimed while pointing at me. "We never should have given birth to you!"I numbly raised my head to look at them. In the reflections of their eyes, I could see how miserable I looked."Did you ever ask for my opinion when you gave birth to me?" I retorted. "You never cared for me, but you want me to shoulder all the pain and suffering.""What's with the attitude?" Dad demanded. "We're your parents! How dare you speak to us like that just because we criticized you?"The corners of my lips twitched up into a pitiful smile. "Oh, so you can feel hurt? I thought that your hearts were made of stone."I turned to stare at Mom. "You said that you never should have given

A hint of panic flickered across Mom's and Dad's faces.Mom immediately stepped forward, her voice dropping to a harsh hiss. "You're forbidden from bringing this up again! You won't breathe a word of this to anyone else. Do you hear me?"Dad tightened his grip on Seth as if he was afraid that I would snatch him away, staring at me with a complicated look in his eyes."It's true that we adopted Seth, but we loved him as if he was our flesh and blood from the moment he stepped through the door," he said.I couldn't help but feel how absurd the entire situation was.Although I was their biological son who had their blood flowing through my veins, they saw me as an eyesore and despised everything about me.Meanwhile, they treated Seth, who didn't share a single drop of blood with them, with endless patience and love.I was always under the impression that Seth was Mom's and Dad's biological son.
