Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Timon Azoulay
Mom and Dad locked me in my room and punished me by not letting me eat. They even demanded that I apologize to Seth.

I had no desire to explain myself to them. I knew that they didn't care about the truth. Even breathing was a crime for the child who wasn't loved.

I was jolted awake by the sounds of coughing in the middle of the night.

I snuck to Mom's and Dad's bedroom and stood outside the door. I could hear the sounds of conversation coming from within.

"Are you having a headache again?" Mom asked.

"I dreamed about Kevin when he was a child," Dad replied. "He kept chasing after me, and I couldn't get away no matter how hard I tried. My head started hurting then. It's like an incessant throbbing…"

Mom sighed. "That's all in the past now. You were under a lot of pressure then, so we had no choice but to lie to Kevin and send him away. That's the only reason why we have Seth now. We did what was best for everyone."

"I get irritated just looking at his gloomy face!" Dad exclaimed in frustration. "Having him was a mistake from the start!"

I stood rooted to the spot, feeling stunned.

It turned out that Dad didn't actually have an allergy. They just simply wanted to get rid of me.

The overwhelming despair made my knees buckle, and I accidentally knocked over the vase that was on a table in the hallway.

The conversation within the room abruptly came to an end.

"Who's there?"

The bedroom door swung open in the next second.

Mom and Dad were briefly stunned when they saw my deathly pale face. A few seconds later, Mom's expression twisted into fury.

"Were you eavesdropping on us?" she demanded. "Where are your manners, Kevin?"

I couldn't help but feel how ridiculous the entire situation was. Wasn't I supposed to be the furious one?

I was the one who had been lied to for the past six years. I was the one who was abandoned in the countryside as if I was nothing but a piece of trash!

"So, you were lying to me this whole time?" I demanded. "Dad didn't have an allergy at all. You just wanted to get rid of me because I was too noisy and irritating?"

Dad didn't show a shred of remorse even when I questioned him. Instead, he became even more impatient and snapped, "Just look at you. You're stubborn, gloomy, and utterly immature! I have no idea how your grandfather raised you when you were living with him in the countryside."

At the mention of Grandpa, the tightly strung rope within me snapped.

"Don't you dare insult Grandpa!" I shouted. "He's ten thousand times better than you! He's nothing like the two of you who abandoned your own son and left him to fend for himself!"

Grandpa started getting weak one winter day. He was constantly slipping in and out of consciousness as he lay in bed. When he was lucid, he would hold my hand and tell me the same thing over and over again.

"You're a good kid, Kevin. Don't hate your parents. They just don't know how to love you."

My heart had felt incredibly hollow as I kneeled by his bedside and listened to his weak breathing.

Grandpa and I were fools. We had made up flimsy excuses for a love that didn't exist.

I used to believe that Mom and Dad did love me. It was just that their love came with a condition. I had to be well-behaved to earn it.

Only then did I understand that their love had so many conditions because they never loved me.

Mom and Dad trembled with rage at my defiance.

"Just look at you! You picked up so many bad habits during your time in the countryside!"

Just then, Seth came out of his room. He tilted his head to the side when he saw what was going on.

"Aunt Wendy always complained about you being very disobedient, Kevin," he said. "She also said that you refused to study properly and spent all day catching fish in the river and climbing trees to look for bird nests with the other unruly kids in the village."

"You're lying!" I exclaimed. "You've never been to the village. How would you know any of that?"

"Of course, I do. Lots of our relatives visit us during the New Year. They always praise me for being well-behaved and mature. They also tell me about all the things that happen in the village."

Mom immediately jumped in to defend him. "Seth's right! All our relatives love him because he's so well-behaved. He's nothing like you, who only knows how to stir up trouble."

Mom and Dad continued to defend Seth.

I could see their mouths opening and closing, but I couldn't hear a single word that they were saying.

It turned out that everyone knew the truth. They knew that Mom and Dad had a perfect son by their side.

I was the only idiot who counted the days on my fingers that were covered with chilblains, foolishly waiting for them to take me home.

The next day, my lawyer and I showed up at Mom's room in the hospital."Kevin… W-What do you think you're doing?" Dad asked, staring at me in disbelief."Solving a problem," I answered.I gestured for my lawyer to hand a document to Dad before continuing, "This is a formal legal notice. I'm officially filing a lawsuit against you for abandonment and defamation.""Abandonment? When did we abandon you? We… We only did what we did for your sake!" Dad exclaimed."You lied to me when I was only a seven-year-old child and abandoned me in the countryside for six years. You didn't care for me at all and left me to fend for myself. You were only forced to take me home after Grandpa passed away. If that doesn't count as abandonment, I don't know what does."I looked at him coldly before continuing, "As for defamation, you spread countless baseless rumors about me in my university. Shall I invite all the witnesses here to vouch for me?""Monster! You're a monster!" Mom shrieked."Don't fo

Mom wailed even louder. She reached out and tried to pull me into her arms."I had no idea, Kevin," she blubbered, "I had no idea that you were telling the truth. I'm sorry… I'll never do it again."Dad was also filled with shame. He looked like he had more to say but couldn't find the right words."It's also our first time as parents, Kevin. We don't know a lot of things, which led us to neglect your feelings. Cut us some slack and give us another chance, okay?"I started laughing as I looked at them."Who's going to cut me some slack then? It's also my first time as your son. Who's going to empathize with the seven-year-old boy who had to fearfully traverse the village alleys by himself after his loved ones hung up on him?"Dad shamefully hung his head.Mom crumpled to the floor and let out a muffled but anguished cry."You should go," I said, averting my gaze. "My heart already died when I had to run away from Mr. William's house while crying by myself when I was eight."Af

I nearly didn't recognize Mom and Dad.They looked absolutely haggard, as if they had aged twenty years. Gone were the elegant and composed demeanors that they used to carry themselves with.Although only a few years had passed since I last saw them, it was as if time itself had created a vast distance between us.Mom and Dad were still stuck in the time when I was seven, while I had already walked forward into the future."Kevin," Dad called hoarsely. "Please come home with us, Kevin."I stood rooted to the spot and just looked at them coldly."Seth… He…"Mom opened her mouth, but she seemed too ashamed to speak. Finally, she let out a long sigh and said, "We were wrong, Kevin. We never should have adopted him. You're the good one. You're our wonderful son.""Your wonderful son?" I repeated, the corner of my lips twitching up into a smile. "But if I remember correctly, the two of you have always hated me."Mom's sobbing intensified at my frosty tone."Seth was lying to us th

Seth ran off to tattle on me to Mom and Dad, crying his eyes out.It didn't take long before my door was slammed open. Mom and Dad stood in the doorway, looking furious."Do you have to treat Seth this way, Kevin?" Dad demanded, looking at me in disappointment. "What did he ever do to you?""Your father's right!" Mom exclaimed while pointing at me. "We never should have given birth to you!"I numbly raised my head to look at them. In the reflections of their eyes, I could see how miserable I looked."Did you ever ask for my opinion when you gave birth to me?" I retorted. "You never cared for me, but you want me to shoulder all the pain and suffering.""What's with the attitude?" Dad demanded. "We're your parents! How dare you speak to us like that just because we criticized you?"The corners of my lips twitched up into a pitiful smile. "Oh, so you can feel hurt? I thought that your hearts were made of stone."I turned to stare at Mom. "You said that you never should have given

A hint of panic flickered across Mom's and Dad's faces.Mom immediately stepped forward, her voice dropping to a harsh hiss. "You're forbidden from bringing this up again! You won't breathe a word of this to anyone else. Do you hear me?"Dad tightened his grip on Seth as if he was afraid that I would snatch him away, staring at me with a complicated look in his eyes."It's true that we adopted Seth, but we loved him as if he was our flesh and blood from the moment he stepped through the door," he said.I couldn't help but feel how absurd the entire situation was.Although I was their biological son who had their blood flowing through my veins, they saw me as an eyesore and despised everything about me.Meanwhile, they treated Seth, who didn't share a single drop of blood with them, with endless patience and love.I was always under the impression that Seth was Mom's and Dad's biological son. I assumed that they had given birth to him after I utterly disappointed them because the

Mom and Dad stopped talking to me after our argument. However, I was glad for the peace and quiet. My heart was completely calm after I was utterly disappointed by our familial bond.…One afternoon, I was sitting on the windowsill in my room.Dad was patiently teaching Seth how to ride a bicycle in the garden. He held onto the backseat as he repeatedly encouraged Seth."You're amazing, Seth!" he shouted. "Don't be scared. I'm right behind you."I got lost in my memories as I watched them, thinking about when I was the same age as Seth.Mom wanted me to calm down, so she taught me cursive."A boy must be calm and composed. A person's handwriting reflects their character. Just look at your handwriting. It's so messy, just like you!"However, I couldn't sit still and spilled ink everywhere.Mom punished me countless times by striking me with a ruler. My palms were always red and swollen.Meanwhile, Seth only cycled two rounds around the garden before he pursed his lips and sai
