"Follow me," he said.

They walked across the ground floor until Bastien opened a door. The room was bright, filled with sunlight pouring through large windows overlooking the garden. Inside, there was a mannequin, an incredible variety of fabrics in different colors and textures, sewing and cutting machines, threads, needles, a design table—everything one would need to create fashion.

—"Wow…" —Kate murmured as she walked slowly among the fabrics, running her fingertips over them like she was touching memories. Bastien leaned against the wall with his arms crossed—"These fabrics are expensive… and rare. Where did you get them?"

—"I have my contacts. I know you're studying fashion design and love creating clothes. Everything you need is here."

—"And for what purpose? I’m a prisoner."

—"When you're ready, we’ll do a fashion show in Milan. I’ll help you launch your own brand. You’ll show the world your talent."

—"But I’m still in college. I haven’t even graduated."

—"What use is a diploma, if everything you need is right here?" —He touched his temple—"And here." —He pointed to his heart.

Kate took a step back.

—"Kate, don’t reject me. I’m not going to hurt you."

—"Forgive me if I doubt that."

—"Kate, you don’t understand—"

—"Then explain it to me!"

—"I can’t. But this… this will be your sanctuary. Whatever you need, just make a list and I’ll get it for you. I could even be your model," —he said with a teasing grin.

—"No! I've only had one model in my life. And no one will ever take his place."

—"I could be a good model."

—"Don’t even think about it. You’re not even close to my Sebastián."

A faint smile formed on Bastien’s lips.

—"Was that Sebastián really so perfect?"

—"Yes. He was the sweetest boy I ever met. We promised that when we grew up, I’d design and he’d model. But…"

—"But what?"

—"His adoptive parents took him away one night. I never heard from him again."

—"You never tried to find him?"

—"Of course I did. I searched for him online for years, but there’s no Sebastián Bouquer. I only know his first and last name. We were kids. I never thought I needed more than that."

—"I see. Maybe he tried to find you too."

—"If he really wanted to find me, he would have. I’ve lived in the same house for over twenty years. Maybe his life got better, and he didn’t want to go back for a girl from the suburbs. We even had code names."

—"Oh yeah? What were they?"

—"I’m not telling you. That was something just between us."

—"You clearly cared for him a lot."

—"He was the first love of my life." —Bastien’s eyes widened.

—"We were only ten, but I loved seeing him every day. It was my favorite part of the day. I used to cook for him, and he loved my cookies. He said he’d open a bakery just to sell them and get rich."

—"I could open you a bakery if you want."

—"No! That dream was between him and me. You’d ruin it. I don’t want anything from you—not the fabrics, not this room, nothing. Nothing that comes from you, Bastien."

—"Kate…"

—"Leave me alone. I just want to go home. To be far away from you. Don’t pretend to be my friend. Don’t pretend you care after what you did to me."

Bastien grabbed her shoulders and looked into her eyes.

—"I did what was necessary, Kate. And I’d do it again if it meant keeping you safe."

—"Ha! What kind of twisted world do you live in where you protect someone… by violating them? Don’t pretend to be a savior when you’re the monster."

—"You have no idea how cruel the world out there is, Kate. You have no idea what I’ve seen."

—"Well good for you, Mister Worldly." —Kate turned and walked out.

Bastien slammed his fists against the table.

—"Damn it!! Kate!" —he ran after her and grabbed her arm. He took a deep breath, then slowly exhaled, trying to stay calm—"Kate," —he whispered—, "understand this… You won’t leave here. Try to make this place feel like home. I’ll bring you anything you want. Just ask me."

In a clinic, Kate slowly opened her eyes, dizzy and disoriented.—Where am I?Nick rose from the sofa.—Darling, you finally woke up.—Who are you? —Kate eyed him with distrust.—Love, it’s me, Níkolas. Your husband.—Husband? —Kate looked at her finger. She was wearing a wedding ring.—Yes, love. You had an accident three days ago. You didn’t wake up. The doctor said it would be normal to feel confused. The blow was strong.—I’m not confused. I don’t know you. I’ve never seen you. Stay away.—My life, please. I know it’s hard, but you’re my wife. I won’t leave you, not now when you need me most. The door opened and a doctor walked in.—Mrs. Russo, it’s good to see you awake.—My name is Katherine Thomas, not Russo.—Oh, I see you still don’t remember.—What do you mean? —Kate looked around, searching for something familiar, but nothing came. She turned back to the two men, distrustful.—You hit your head in the accident. It caused temporary amnesia. Your husband arrived shortly after

  • Bastien's Obsession   The Betrayal

Night had fallen, and Bastien was heading up to the bedroom. He wore black dress pants and a white shirt. When he entered, he saw Kate in a blue velvet dress with a low-cut back and plunging neckline. For a moment, he forgot how to breathe. Kate lifted her gaze and walked toward him.—What is it, darling, do I look bad?—Heavens, Kitty… you look stunning. —Kate smiled and kissed his lips. Then she picked up a black bow tie, placed it on Bastien, and helped him with the cummerbund and jacket of his tuxedo.—You look perfect, darling. • Bastien's Obsession   If I Were Born Again, I Would Look for You Again

At midnight, Bastien got out of bed to look out at the street. He checked every corner to make sure nothing was out of place. He saw his men walking on guard duty and felt reassured. When he returned to the room, Kate was awake, leaning against the door.—Kitty.—What are you doing?—Making sure no one is out there, but my men are all around, so you can rest easy.Kate stretched out her arms, and Bastien pulled her against his body.—Let’s go back to bed. —Bastien cupped her cheek and lifted her face—. I won’t let anything bad happen to you, Kate. You are the most precious thing I have. Nothing will ever happen to you. All right?Kate nodded, and Bastien sealed that promise with a kiss. He began to take off her blouse, letting it fall to the floor.—Bastien…—You’re wearing too many clothes; you won’t be able to sleep comfortably.Kate smiled.—Yes, I’m sure you’re worried about my comfort.—Always, darling. —Bastien kissed her neck as his hands unhooked her bra and slid down her skir

  • Bastien's Obsession   I’m Not Stubborn Anymore… Well, Maybe Just a Little

Kate rolled off Bastien and lay beside him, breathless and smiling, while he wrapped her in his arms and brushed his nose against her cheek.—“You’re the love of my life. Destiny knew it and brought you to me. Every time I look back, I realize I always belonged by your side,” —Bastien whispered, making Kate smile.—“That’s a song.”—“Yes, and I love it. Every time I hear it, it makes more sense: you are the love of my life, and there’s no one else in this world I desire or love more than you. I only have eyes for you, Kate. Only you.”—“It’s the same for me. When Cristy sends me videos of strippers or half-naked men, I always think the same thing.”—“And what’s that?”—“‘Bastien is better.’” —Kate smiled, looking into his eyes—. “For me, there’s no one better than you, darling. No one. Only you.”—“Wait… what do you mean Cristy sends you videos of half-naked men?”—“You know her. Cristy never changes. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t adore Arthur.”—“I know, but just so you know… wha

  • Bastien's Obsession   There’s a Traitor

Once in the car, Bastien accelerated, followed by Joel’s SUV. Kate smiled as she looked at the scenery. They arrived at a park near an ice cream shop; the children ran toward the swings while Kate walked hand in hand with Bastien, watching them play. They sat under a tree, the kids climbing the slide and playing hide-and-seek. Bastien leaned back against the trunk, and Kate settled in front of him, resting against his chest. Bastien’s arms lay across her abdomen, his head on her shoulder.—The kids are happy.—Yes, and they’ll be even happier once they get ice cream.—That little Addy is a mischievous one, always making Lucien protect and support her.—Bastien, Lucien reminds me so much of you. He’s very protective of Addy. If one day we’re not here, he’ll take care of her with his life.—I still don’t like the idea, but Lucien has already shown me he’s capable of standing up even to his own father for Addy.—He looks more like you than Lucca.—Hahaha, that’s only because you haven’t
