MIGUEL

The whiskey burned as it slid down my throat, but it wasn’t enough to chase away the frustration I was feeling.

I shouldn’t have left her. I didn't want to leave her.

I only wanted to push her, to know if she'd break, to prove to her and myself that I had complete control, that I own her. And yet, it was difficult for me to walk away from her.

Damn it!

Gabriella entered my room and gave me a file. “Are you okay?” She asked after studying my face.

“Yes. Is this the list?”

“Yes, that's the list of everyone attending the party, so no surprises.” She took a sip from my martini, and looked at me.

I knew that look. “What is it Gabriella?”

“She contacted me. Asked if she can join you as a plus one.”

My eyes darkened. “I told you to cut off all contact with her.”

“She just called. I couldn't ignore her.”

I scoffed. “She doesn't know how to let go does she?”

“Are you going with her?”

“Never.”

“You need a plus one, should I arrange someone for you?” Gabriella asked.

“No need. I'll go wi

MIGUELI've never been jealous of a little child before in my life. The kid Catalina brought home was a menace. He didn't stay for a full 24 hrs but he made sure I felt his presence in my house.First, he never left Catalina's side, he followed her around like a lost puppy. When it was time to sleep, he insisted on sleeping between us. I couldn't touch my woman because of a little boy, and when I complained, he only laughed at me and Catalina laughed along with him. Then the next morning, Catalina made me babysit him while she prepared for work. I stared down at the little boy, wondering what to do with him. And the boy laughed at my expression. The child was laughing. At me.He had no fear. He tugged at my hair, slapped my cheek, and then sneezed on me. All in under five minutes, and still… I didn’t put him down.“Kid,” I muttered. “You better not poop on me.”Axel giggled again.“I am a very dangerous man,” I tried to scare the kid. “I kill people for a living,” I told him serio

CATALINA I stared at my reflection in the mirror of the restaurant’s restroom. My heart was pounding, not from nerves, but from the plan forming in my head. If I was going to test Miguel, I had to make it count. It needed to be subtle, clever… something that would reveal his heart without him realizing he was being tested.I wasn’t proud of it, but I had to know. Before I said “I do,” I needed to see what kind of father he could be or if he even wanted to be one.I stepped back into the dining room where Miguel was taking a phone call, his brows furrowed, voice low and curt. I waited for him to hang up.“Everything okay?” I asked sweetly, sliding back into my seat.He nodded. “Just some work.”“Speaking of work…” I began carefully. “My company is doing this charity work for a nearby orphanage, I'm also going there today.”Miguel blinked. “A charity?”“Yes. We’re renovating the place. I thought we could help them and it'd also be good for the public eye.”He nodded approvingly. “Tha

CATALINA I snuggled against Miguel, wrapping my arms tight around him. It excited me, that I would have access to him like this all my life. Mrs. Catalina Alejandro.I giggled at the sound of that in my head…it sounded nice. I should probably get used to it.I thought of telling him about the pregnancy. No. That can wait. It would be like a surprise or a gift. How happy would he be if I told him we were expecting a baby on our wedding night? Extremely happy right? But what if Miguel welcomed the idea of getting married but disliked the idea of having kids? What would happen then? Well he'd have to suck it up because I've decided to have this baby, with or without Miguel.I gave him a peck and got up to prepare for work. Getting pregnant or engaged didn't mean I had to stop working…maybe during my honeymoon? Or when my stomach gets too big. I giggled again as I imagined myself with a protruding belly. Miguel turned and opened his eyes. “You keep giggling,” he said, his voice rough.

MIGUELIt seemed right. It was right.Everything was right when it came to Catalina…After my first failed marriage, I killed any thoughts of getting married. It wasn't the best thing for a man like me to get into so I promised myself not to do it.I guess the fear of losing Catalina was greater than any promise I made to myself. She wasn't just the type of woman to mess around with, she’s a keeper and I'm glad I realized that before it was too late….And I know she wouldn't be safe with me, but I will do anything within my power to make sure I eliminate every threat to her safety….Pablo.I didn't want it to come to this but it had to be done. I'll have to go into war with Pablo, it's obvious that his vendetta against me will never end…unless I kill him first…“What is going on in that head of yours?” Catalina asked. “You're so lost in thoughts.”I was sitting on my bed and she sat beside me. “Nothing my love.”She smiled at me. “It's not nothing. You don't want to tell me.” She flash

CATALINA The rain started as a drizzle and quickly turned into a downpour as I sat in my car, parked just outside my apartment.I hadn't moved for nearly an hour, my fingers gripping the steering wheel, my eyes staring ahead, into empty space.Pregnant.The word echoed again and again in my mind, wrapping itself around every thought and decision.I thought about telling Miguel. And yet, I didn't move. Couldn't.Because this wasn't just about Miguel. It was about a child. A life I had to protect in a world full of guns, killings, kidnaps and all sorts of vile things. A world I was warned countless times to walk away from. Could I really bring a child into that world? My phone buzzed. My heart skipped a beat.Miguel.“Hello…”“I didn’t want to call or disturb you…but I needed to hear your voice.”My throat tightened.“I told myself I'd give you space,” he continued softly, “but I can't. I really miss you.”A lump rose in my throat. I wanted to speak, to say something…anything. But all

CATALINA Three weeks now. Three weeks since I left Miguel's house. I won't lie, it hasn't been such a bad experience for me. I was working, I could leave the house anytime I wanted, I didn't have to be at Miguel's beck and call. He kept true to his words, he hadn't tried to contact me since I left. I knew he was still secretly keeping tabs on me but I appreciated the fact that he did it from a distance. I missed him sometimes though, the distance from him didn't change the way I felt, it only made me yearn for him each passing day. Well, I was the one that asked to be away from him, wasn't I? I had to…I felt really hurt and betrayed by him. And was doing him a favor by leaving willingly right? He didn't want the kind of life he lived for me so he kept telling me to leave when any slightest opportunity to do so came up…and that I did.“So he's doing alright?” I asked Andrés. We've been talking secretly on the phone for the past few weeks. He checked on me and sometimes I asked abou

MIGUEL It's been a week now, a week without Catalina. I can't describe the emptiness I feel in my heart, I didn't expect to be so attached to her that her absence would tumble my whole existence. I got information that she resumed working at the company and she's really trying her best at running it. There was also no sign of Pablo's men being anywhere around her new house. Now that I was sure she was happy and safe in her new place, I focused on the matter that has been tugging at me. I called for Gabriella to come into my office for a chat and now she sat across from me, waiting.“Do you know why Catalina left?” I asked her.“I'm afraid I don't,” she replied.“I do. Olivia contacted her.”I saw the look of shock register on her face. “Olivia? How did Olivia contact Catalina?”“That's exactly what I want to know. How did Olivia get to know that Catalina would be at the office that day and how did she get the files I had on Catalina's father?”“Why would you ask me that?”“Because y

CATALINA “Okay.”I paused, shocked that he would agree to my request.“Okay?”He nodded. “I told you I'll do anything to fix this. If this is what you want then I'll oblige, even if it hurts me deeply to let you go.”“You mean I'm…I'm free to go?”“I'll end the contract myself so you don't have to pay any fees. You can leave whenever you want, but I only have one request.”I swallowed. “What request?”“That you let me get you a place and assign a few people to guard you.”“What's the difference? I'm not really free from you then.”“The difference is that these people will only work for you and you don't need to answer to me. I'm doing this because I don't trust Pablo to leave you alone. I won't be around you unless you say otherwise.”I looked at him, trying to find the lie, the catch, anything that hinted this was just another manipulation. But for the first time, Miguel looked... defeated. Not the cold, calculating man I’d grown used to, but a man standing on the edge, letting go

  • Be My Slave: A Mafia Romance    Chapter 47

CATALINA I grew up in a very simple home, we were contended with whatever we had. We didn't have money but we had love and it was okay for us. My father worked at a factory and my mother used to teach in a school. I was happy, I admit there were times I wished I was like those rich kids my mom used to teach. She took me to her private home lessons sometimes so I got an idea of how the rich lived, so exotic and without any worries of the future. Though I got jealous sometimes, I liked the family I was born into and if it turned out that they didn't have enough money to provide everything I needed, I would only endure it and work hard to give my parents a better life in my own time. Then one day, my dad lost his job at the factory. Apparently, it went bankrupt and had to let go of all their workers. I was still young then but I remembered how sad and heartbroken my dad was the first few weeks of being at home and unemployed, he literally became a shadow of himself. Soon after, my mot
