I covered my ears as the banging on the door became louder, I prayed they wouldn't break down my door and barge in.
This has been my life since my father died, debt collectors always chasing after me. If I'm unlucky, they see me outside and chase me all around town but if I'm lucky, like today, they come when I'm inside and bang on my door till they get tired and leave.
They left after a while and I crawled out from under my bed where I hid. I looked around the house my father left for me, I had sold everything valuable and I still hadn't paid even a quarter of the debt we owed. All my part time jobs barely raised enough money to even feed myself. I fell on my knees and let the tears flow from my eyes, this wasn't the life I wanted to live. If I had the choice, I wouldn't choose this life for myself. My phone rang and I recognized the caller.
“Hello, Catalina speaking.”
“Hello Miss Catalina, I'm calling in respect for the job you applied for at our club. Congratulations, you passed the interview. You can start tonight.”
I jumped around in excitement. I got the job!! I was going to be an exotic dancer at the nightclub. It wasn't really a decent job but it wasn't illegal and the pay was more than what I get from all my part time jobs. I got up on my feet and wiped my eyes dry. This wasn't the time to cry, I had a job to prepare for.
The club was dimly lit and everyone there looked like they had not a single problem in the world. The instruction given to me was simple - make sure the audience is captivated.
The music changed and everyone's eyes were fixed on me as I stepped onto the stage. My heart beat faster with each step I took. Only for five minutes I told myself. I took a deep breath and swallowed hard. Dancing was my passion, my talent. You can do this Catalina. I told myself again.
Then it all came to me. I closed my eyes and let the music pulse through my veins, letting my body take over. I swayed my hips seductively, feeling the fabric of my dress clinging to my skin. I am a very sexy girl, I knew this and I decided to use it to my advantage.
I ran my hands over my body, slowly, lazily, all while moving to the rhythm of the song. Then I opened my eyes and immediately locked eyes with a man sitting at the far end corner and watching me closely, everyone was looking at me but somehow this man's stare made me so nervous, I reminded myself to focus.
I walked slowly to the pole in front of me, as the audience watched, I climbed the pole, spinning effortlessly before descending in a slow, controlled drop, all while staring at the man. Neither of us broke eye contact. Somehow, I wasn't dancing for the audience any longer, I was dancing for this man, this stranger that captivated my soul and made my insides burn just by staring at him. As the music reached its crescendo, I did my final dance and smiled at the crowd teasingly before walking away.
“Good job Catalina.” My boss met me backstage. “Your dance was captivating, even I couldn't take my eyes off you. Oh I'm so glad I hired you. Keep up the good work.”
“Thank you sir.” He tapped my shoulder and walked away.
I went into the changing room to change to my normal clothes, my work here was done. This was the beauty of this work, I thought to myself, less stress and more pay.
While changing, my mind couldn't help but think about the man earlier. He exuded so much power and authority even as he sat with his legs crossed. The way he looked at me was unlike anything. I wondered who he was, and surprisingly I wanted to know everything about him.
I was about to leave when my boss called out to me.
“I'm so glad you're still here Catalina. Someone wants to meet you.”
“Who?” I asked.
“Someone very important. You can't say no to him. He's outside the parking lot. Black Limousine, the headlights are on.” And with that he left.
As I walked to the parking lot, I prayed silently. What if this was one of the debt collectors and they're finally here to take me? But my boss said it was someone very important.
I sighted the Black Limo with the headlights on and I walked towards it, I knocked on the window and it rolled down immediately.
“Enter.” A voice called out from inside.
The door opened and I entered immediately.
It was him, I was very sure of it. The same man at the club. I couldn't see his face clearly at the club but I remembered his attire and I felt the same way I was feeling inside the club so it had to be him.
“What is your name?” The voice was so commanding that I blurted out immediately.
“Catalina Gomez!”
“You dance so well Catalina. I want to see you dance everyday.”
That was very direct. I said to myself. I tried to stop myself from blushing. I looked at him again. He was very handsome, his face looked rigid but I think that maybe it's because he didn't smile so often. His hair looked so soft that I wanted to reach out my hand and touch it.
“I want you.” The words were like an electric shock that bolted me back to reality.
“What did you just say?” I asked him again.
“I do not like to repeat myself young lady. I'm very sure you heard me.” He answered rudely.
“I want you to be my slave. You will do anything I say without complaints. I will have control over your body and all that you do with it. Of course it's not for free, I will pay you. Do you understand?”
Bastard. Rich bastard. Ugh ..I began to feel hatred for this man. Who does he think he is to tell me such an abominable thing?
“Never!” I told him.
“I always have what I want.”
“You will never have me!”
“It will only take time, but I must have you. I will own you.”
I chuckled…. “That will be over my dead body.”
CATALINA Today's my first day. As a boss. And guess what? I didn't even know the kind of company that was given to me. And that's why I was in Miguel's room instead of getting ready for work.“A construction company?” I asked in bewilderment.“Yes, it's the best fit for you amongst the rest.” He sighed. “You haven't told me why you're in such a hurry to start?”“Forget that. What are the other options I have?”“There's an art gallery, a fishing company, casinos, private security firms and I have people running all these places for me.”I disliked the idea of running those kinds of places. “Well, if I'm going to run the construction company it has to go clean.”“Learn how to run it first, we'll talk about the rest later.”I knew it'd be hard to convince him, but I would eventually. “Now, let me go and get ready.”“Remember,” he stopped me. “Two bodyguards with you at all times, two at the entrance.”“Noted.” No arguments whatsoever, I didn't care if they were ten… I was doing somethi
MIGUEL Catalina didn't understand me. I keep telling her no for her own good. What was I thinking when I added giving her a company as a clause in the contract? The companies I have were just coverups for more illicit and illegal activities. I don't want her to get involved in something like that. What if it scares her away? And Pablo, he was hunting for her like a crazy dog. She's been locked up in her room for hours now and I didn't know if going to talk to her was the best thing to do. I looked at the files that had been on my desk since morning. The best thing would be to destroy them right? I've had it for a while now and always thought of what to do with them. Should I show her? She deserves to know right? I kept asking myself over the months I've known her, and now that we've gotten closer, I'm even more scared to tell her the truth I've been keeping from her. Maybe later, but for now these files have to be destroyed. I'd burn them later, for now I just threw them in the
CATALINA Things didn't change. Miguel didn't treat me differently as we got home, though it was still too early for me to tell. I just had this nagging feeling that it was too good to be true. From the way he held me as I slept, to the way he laughed freely while we snuck into the kitchen and foraged for food. I'd never seen him so carefree and relaxed.Once we got into the kitchen, Miguel went straight for the fridge while I tiptoed around, pretending to be a spy. It was kind of funny. The owner of the house was scared of being caught in his kitchen eating the food he provided. He pulled out leftover sandwiches and some kind of pasta dish that smelled way too good to resist. He placed everything on the counter and turned to me. “Anything else?”I grinned. “Dessert. There has to be dessert.”Miguel nodded and opened the fridge, bringing out a slice of chocolate cake. My eyes lit up. “Good one!”We sat at the dining table and quietly ate all the food. "Full?" he had asked when I
MIGUEL The minute Catalina gave me the plate number, I handed it over to Andrés."Run it. I want to know everything, the owner, address, who they work for.""On it boss," Andrés said, already pulling out his phone as he walked away.I turned back to Catalina. She looked exhausted, maybe still a little shaken by everything she'd learned today. I hated that she had to go through all this because of me. I should have just let her live her life. "You should rest," I said, reaching for her hand. "I'll handle this."She hesitated. "Whatever you do, be careful."A small smile tugged at my lips. She was actually worried about me. "I’m not alone, Catalina. I have an army…literally." I squeezed her hand gently. "You, on the other hand, need sleep. You need to rest."She hesitated for a bit, then nodded in agreement."Good girl," I said, and leaned in to press a kiss on her forehead.Gabriella cleared her throat loudly. "I see some things have changed," she muttered under her breath, walking
CATALINA The fear I felt didn't leave me. As we got ready to leave Miami, I still feared that Miguel would change once we went back home. He would worry about people seeing him as weak and using me to get to him.“Hey, are you okay?”“Mhmm,” I lied. I wasn't okay, I was worried to my bones.“I love this dress,” Miguel said, checking out my outfit. It was a black mini gown that clung to my body and revealed my curves. “Remind me to get Gabriella a gift, she's really outdone herself this time.”“I was actually worried when you said Gabriella packed my bags. I thought she'd give me something hideous to wear.”Miguel smiled. “You have to give her some credit, she means well.”I shook my head. “I doubt that. She's really against us. She just wants me gone so badly.”“She's only looking out for me,” Miguel said, he was putting together his things now.“You keep saying that. Is she like your past lover or something? She acts like one.”Miguel laughed. “Does it look like that?” He was done
CATALINA Okay. I know I said I'd build my walls even higher….but how could I do that when he's doing all these sweet things for me? The way he looks at me and touches me. Maybe I should bring my walls down a bit? Watch how things go….I had this fear that things would go back to the way they were once we went back to Mexico. If they did, I'll have to accept my fate and keep the memories of this place buried in my heart.“How much is that?” I asked, rising up from his body. We'd been kissing for so long that I lost track of time.He licked his lips. “I don't know…. five million maybe?”I laughed. “That's fair.”“You want to wipe off another five?”“Not yet,” I made my way into the small cottage. “I want to see inside.”Miguel groaned in disapproval. “Okay fine.”We made our way inside the cottage, I gasped as I entered…it looked so beautiful.“Do you like it?” Miguel asked, “we'll stay here for the night and head out tomorrow morning before going back to Mexico. I know I promised to
MIGUEL She disappeared into the bathroom, I heard the sound of water running moments later.I sank onto the edge of the massive bed, running a hand down my face. What the hell was I doing? It wasn't supposed to be like this.I was supposed to keep her close, have my fun and let her go after a year. But somewhere between pretending she didn’t affect me and pretending I didn’t want her, I'd stopped pretending. And now... I was so far gone I couldn't see straight.I leaned back, staring at the ceiling, letting my thoughts go in different directions. She deserved more than a man like me.I wasn't stable.I held secrets that could make her hate me forever. But selfishly, I wanted her anyway. The bathroom door creaked open, and I lifted my head.Catalina stepped out, wrapped in a towel, her skin still wet and her hair damp from the shower. She looked soft, fresh…. beautiful. She paused when she caught me staring, her cheeks turning pink. “I’ll just get dressed,” she mumbled.I stood up sl
CATALINA When the wedding finally ended and the guests started leaving in ones and twos, Miguel pulled me aside, away from the crowd that were scrambling to talk to him, onto a quiet balcony that overlooked the water. The night air was warm and heavy with the scent of salt and roses. We stood there for a long moment, neither of us speaking.I marveled at the beauty of this place and wondered….if I ever got married, what would my wedding be like?Miguel turned to face me, his hands sliding into his pockets.“Thanks for coming with me,” he said suddenly.I blinked. “Ten million is a good bargain.”He laughed, then he was suddenly serious. His voice, low and rough. “Your time and presence is worth more than that.”“Maybe you could make it forty million then.”He laughed again. “No way! I have other ideas to collect my debt.”I stared at him, the wind teasing strands of hair into my face. “What ideas? Tell me.”His fingers gently brushed against my skin as he carefully swept a strand o
CATALINA Hmph! Another morning in this awful place. How long have I been here? How many months do I have left? Can I possibly avoid everyone until then?Gosh! I was so embarrassed. He knew that I wanted something more? He knew it and he continued treating me like that?!Bastard!Selfish bastard! He even managed to turn my own stunt against me. Now I owe him forty million, what if he uses it as an excuse to keep me here another year? That'd be disastrous. There was a soft knock on my door, then came the voice I didn't want to hear at the moment. “Catalina, can we talk?”No, we can't. “It's really important, and I'll break down your door if you don't open up.”I groaned deeply, opening the door with a force that nearly yanked my arm away from my body. “What?!!”He smiled at me and my heart leaped into my stomach. “Buenos días to you too.”I'm not having any of this. “You have ten seconds….”“I have to attend the wedding of a distant friend and I need a plus one. Will you go with me?”
