Chapter 1

Author: Dawn Ether
The moment I heard the announcement, I forced myself to sit up.

I wanted to confront Tristan Shelby and ask him why he'd done this to me. More than anything, I wanted to know whether he'd ever stopped to think that the children he'd killed were his own flesh and blood.

A wave of despair washed over me as I watched the countdown on the system interface.

Fighting through the pain, I climbed out of bed, retrieved several wooden blocks from underneath it, and began carving them into crosses.

I'd already carved small wooden crosses for each of my four children with my own hands. Tristan certainly wouldn't allow my family a proper burial either, so I had to find some way to remember them.

The two maids who had deliberately broken the news to me exchanged bewildered glances.

"Is she not going to make a scene?" one of them said, making no attempt to lower her voice.

"How strange," the other responded. "She's always been the first to kick up a fuss whenever anything happens to her family."

The door flew open, and Tristan strode inside. His cloak was soaked from the rain, but his expression was icy.

He approached me and knocked the wooden block out of my hand.

"Rosalind's already in such a terrible state, and your mother is still using vile witchcraft against her!" he snarled, seizing my chin. "Isolde, how do you intend to pay for this?"

Rosalind Reed was the adopted daughter of the Shelby family. When the Shelby family fell from grace and lost everything, she was forced into a brothel, where her health steadily deteriorated.

Ever since she was brought back, Tristan had held me responsible for every misfortune that befell her.

When she caught a chill in the spring, I had to kneel in the snow for three days while preparing her medicine. When she suffered heatstroke in the summer, I had to kneel under the scorching sun from noon until sunset. When she coughed up blood in the autumn, I received ten lashes.

Now, I dropped to my knees in the direction of Rosalind's quarters and struck my forehead against the cold stone.

Three blows were enough to leave a painful swelling on my forehead.

"That's enough!"

Tristan's voice cracked. He hauled me to my feet, and the moment he met my vacant stare, he froze.

I paid him no attention. I was too numb even to care.

"My lord, may I see my family's remains?"

Tristan's expression darkened as he shot the two maids a murderous glare. He knew exactly how the news had reached me.

The maids immediately dropped to their knees, begging for forgiveness as their bodies trembled uncontrollably.

Tristan turned back to me.

"They used forbidden magic against Rosalind. Of course I'm not going to spare them," he said, a sneer tugging at his lips. "Back then, your father burned my entire family until nothing was left. Now tell me, what right do you have to see their remains?"

I'd asked Father why he'd done it.

He'd explained that if he hadn't burned the bodies, the women would have been violated even in death, while the men would have suffered a similar indignity. Burning the bodies had been his way of preserving what little dignity the Shelby family had left.

I'd explained this so many times that I no longer had the strength to repeat myself.

Instead, I knelt before Tristan again.

"Please… I'm begging you."

Father had always indulged me, and Mother had loved me dearly. My older brother, Thomas Moore, had always wanted to give me the very best of everything.

I hadn't seen any of them in six years since I'd become Tristan's mistress. I just wanted to see their faces one last time.

Tristan bent down and tilted my chin up, forcing me to meet his gaze.

"Fine. Crawl on your knees all the way to Rosalind's quarters, stopping every three steps to press your forehead to the ground. If she agrees, I'll let you see them."

The autumn rain had been relentless, and the cold seemed to seep into everything.

I'd always been terribly sensitive to the cold, but if this was my only chance to see my family again, I was willing to endure it.

Without hesitation, I rose to my feet, pushed aside the heavy curtain covering the doorway, and stepped into the rain.

Footsteps sounded behind me.

"Keep an eye on her," Tristan ground out as he passed. "Don't let her slack off."

Before King Arthur could say another word, Tristan drove the dagger all the way into his chest. To make sure King Arthur was dead, Tristan dragged his body to the execution grounds and ordered his head cut off. Then, carrying the severed head, he strode out of the palace as though he owned the place. Those who witnessed the scene could only stare in horror. To them, Tristan looked like the devil himself, risen from hell. After putting down the rebellions led by the first and third princes, Tristan helped the seventh prince, who had only just come of age, ascend the throne. Then he cleared the Moore family's name. The common people, however, knew nothing about the intricate power struggle between the royal family and the great noble houses. All they knew was that they were baffled. Barely six months ago, the Moore family had been brutally executed on Tristan's orders. How, then, could they suddenly be declared innocent? No one could give them an answer. Soon afterward, Tr

"If it weren't for you, Isolde would never have had to witness any of this," Tristan snarled, clamping a hand around Rosalind's throat. "Why would you do such a thing? How could you be so cruel?"To his surprise, Rosalind summoned enough strength to shove him away. Her hair had come loose, but she couldn't care less."Have you forgotten that you murdered all five of your own children?" she spat. "Stop pretending to be a righteous man! If I'm cruel, it's only because I learned from you!"Let me tell you the truth. I lied about needing the blood from an infant's heart to restore my health. Every time it was sent to me, I poured it away. Something so disgusting wasn't fit to pass my lips."Well, how does it feel to have murdered five of your own children with your own hands?" Tristan's grip on her throat tightened. For a moment, he genuinely wanted to strangle her to death. "Go on. Kill me," Rosalind taunted, not even struggling. "Once I see Gerald and Mr. Shelby in the afterlife,

Alarmed, Tristan's agent rushed forward to support him. "My lord! Please, you must take care of yourself!"Tristan tried to shove them away, but he no longer had the strength to do so. Every breath sent a sharp, throbbing pain through his chest. He let out a heart-wrenching cry right in front of his guards as memories of his time with my family came rushing back. My parents had always treated him as their own son.Even my brother, Thomas, had once told him, "I wouldn't trust anyone else with my sister, but I trust you. You're the only man I'd feel comfortable leaving her with."Don't make me regret putting my faith in you. If you ever mistreat her, I'll haunt you for the rest of your life!"Yet because Tristan had refused to trust us, my entire family had been thrown into prison. Even after death, their bodies had been subjected to the most degrading treatment. The truth had come to light just four hours after my death. If only the truth had been revealed four hours earli

As Tristan bombarded the royal physician with questions, he watched the physician intently, clinging to the faintest hope like a drowning man grasping at a lifeline. He wanted the royal physician to nod. He wanted him to say that I had taken some kind of death-inducing potion, that I was only pretending to be dead. The royal physician sank to the floor, sweat pouring down his face. "My lord, I've only ever heard of such a potion," he finally said in a trembling voice. "I've never seen one myself. Besides, its effects can last no longer than 12 hours. The pulse may grow faint, but it's still there and can be detected with a careful examination."But this lady's pulse… it's truly gone."The light in Tristan's eyes faded once more. He swayed, barely steadying himself against the bedpost. With a wave of his hand, he dismissed the royal physician. Only then did Tristan drop to his knees with a heavy thud. "I'll wait 12 hours for you," he murmured. "Just 12 hours. Then you'll wak

Tristan caught my limp body just in time, dropping to one knee as he cradled me in his arms."Isolde! Wake up!" he shouted. "What good will pretending to be unconscious do? Get up and look. Look at what's happened!"When my family's bodies were burned, I hid behind the ornamental rocks in the garden and watched everything with my own eyes. Who do you think you are to faint now? Get up!"Tears spilled down his cheeks as he continued shaking me, but I never responded. Now, I could only watch everything unfold as a disembodied soul. I had to admit, in the instant I died, all I felt was relief. And yet, I still couldn't bring myself to look at the execution grounds. I was powerless, and all I could do was run away. "System, why am I still here?" I asked, turning my back on the execution grounds and trying to make myself as small as possible."Data deletion in progress. Once the process is complete, you may return to your original world."When Tristan realized I still wasn't re

  • Bearing His Heirs to Buy My Family's Lives   Chapter 4

I sat up, my head still spinning, but forced myself out of bed. No matter what, I had to see my family one last time. I'd barely taken two steps when the door burst open. Tristan stormed in, seized me by the throat, and slammed me against the edge of the bed. "Rosalind was kind enough to pay her respects to your child, and you had the nerve to push her!" Tristan roared. "She's only just found out she's pregnant! How could you be so heartless? You vile, vicious woman!"Do you have any idea that you've just killed another member of my family?"So he was capable of mourning a dead child after all. He knew how much it hurt a mother to lose her baby. When Rosalind lost hers, it was my fault. He blamed me for being a heartless monster. But when my babies died, they said it was karma and that it was a sign that I was never meant to have children. The absurdity of this was beyond me. "Why aren't you saying anything?" Tristan hissed, pain and hatred warring in his eyes. "Aren't
