Chapter 2

Author: Dawn Ether
Two guards followed close behind as I made my way to Rosalind's quarters.

The rain grew heavier until it fell in torrents. Before long, I was drenched. The only relief came when I stopped and pressed my forehead against the cold stone, just to ease the strain on my aching body.

By the time I crossed the courtyard and reached the main hall, I was so numb with cold that I could barely feel the pain anymore.

As I passed a pavilion, I spotted several maids and older servants sheltering from the rain.

"I heard Ms. Moore lost her baby again. What terrible luck."

"Luck? It's karma. A wicked woman like her was never meant to have children."

That comment sent a chill down my spine.

My babies hadn't died because of some cruel twist of fate. Someone had restrained them and cut out their hearts to drain their blood.

Tears slid down my cheeks along with the rain as I clenched my fists.

I simply couldn't understand why Tristan could be so cruel.

Ten years ago, when we first became engaged, he'd secretly spent days making little wooden rocking horses and building cradles.

"I'm just planning ahead," he'd said. "Once we're married, we'll have children soon enough. If we wait until then to get everything ready, it'll be too late.

"If we have a boy, I'll teach him how to fight. If we have a girl, you'll teach her poetry and music."

He'd always loved children.

Yet when my baby had been drained of blood and stopped breathing, one of the servants had asked what should be done with the body.

"Take it to the memorial hall," he'd replied coldly.

Half an hour later, I finally reached Rosalind's quarters.

The cold had settled deep in my bones, and even the slightest movement was becoming difficult.

As soon as I entered the courtyard and dropped to my knees, a gust of wind swept through, sending seeds from the golden rain tree overhead tumbling down to the ground in front of me.

I stared at them, momentarily stunned.

I'd always loved golden rain trees.

Tristan had planted this one himself the year we became engaged. He'd arranged the entire courtyard for me, too. The room beyond was lined with thick rugs and warmed by three braziers. Even in the depths of winter, it stayed warm and cozy while blizzards raged outside.

He had spent five straight days making the arrangements. When he was finally done, he'd come to me with a smug little smile, expecting praise.

"Now you'll never have to suffer from cold hands and feet again, my sweet Isolde."

I curled my stiff, frozen fingers as I watched Rosalind emerge from the house, wrapped in a fur cloak and leaning against Tristan.

The black fox fur was beautiful, but the seams were crooked.

Tristan had made the fur cloak himself. He'd even hidden it among the gifts he prepared for our wedding, hoping to surprise me.

Now, none of it belonged to me anymore.

Just then, Rosalind spotted me in the rain.

"Tristan, she just lost her baby," she said softly. "If she stays out in the rain much longer, she could fall seriously ill."

"There's no need to pity her."

I'd reached the foot of the steps, but the guards blocked my way before I could reach the covered porch.

"You're soaked and filthy," Tristan said. "If you get the rugs wet, Rosalind might catch a chill."

I backed away slowly, careful not to touch anything.

"Ms. Reed, please have mercy on me," I pleaded. "Let me see my father, mother, and brother one last time."

The moment the words left my mouth, Rosalind cried out and buried herself in Tristan's arms, begging me not to say another word.

"Just hearing about them… I can barely breathe," she gasped. "Tristan, I'm scared. The Moores are terrifying!"

Tristan's expression darkened. He rubbed her back reassuringly, then turned to me.

"See that? Rosalind can't bear the sight of you."

"My lord…"

Before I could finish, Rosalind peeked out from his arms.

"But she lost her baby because of me. Why not let her see the child? At least I could do this one thing for her."

Tristan's condescending gaze fell on me.

"Choose. Your child or your family."

I'd never even laid eyes on any of my five children. Their faces were a mystery to me, but my family's were etched into my memory.

Father stroking my hair and telling me not to be afraid, Mother slipping a piece of candied fruit into my mouth, Thomas riding all the way to Joyston just to buy me a box of rouge… the memories came flooding back.

Yet I had no idea what my own child looked like.

Almost without thinking, I whispered, "My baby."

My blood ran cold the moment I heard my voice. I turned toward the Moore estate, whispering apologies over and over as though they could somehow ease the guilt gnawing at me.

Tristan scoffed and ordered a guard to take me to the memorial hall.

Inside, the priests were performing the funeral rites.

One glance was enough to make my breath catch.

Before King Arthur could say another word, Tristan drove the dagger all the way into his chest. To make sure King Arthur was dead, Tristan dragged his body to the execution grounds and ordered his head cut off. Then, carrying the severed head, he strode out of the palace as though he owned the place. Those who witnessed the scene could only stare in horror. To them, Tristan looked like the devil himself, risen from hell. After putting down the rebellions led by the first and third princes, Tristan helped the seventh prince, who had only just come of age, ascend the throne. Then he cleared the Moore family's name. The common people, however, knew nothing about the intricate power struggle between the royal family and the great noble houses. All they knew was that they were baffled. Barely six months ago, the Moore family had been brutally executed on Tristan's orders. How, then, could they suddenly be declared innocent? No one could give them an answer. Soon afterward, Tr

"If it weren't for you, Isolde would never have had to witness any of this," Tristan snarled, clamping a hand around Rosalind's throat. "Why would you do such a thing? How could you be so cruel?"To his surprise, Rosalind summoned enough strength to shove him away. Her hair had come loose, but she couldn't care less."Have you forgotten that you murdered all five of your own children?" she spat. "Stop pretending to be a righteous man! If I'm cruel, it's only because I learned from you!"Let me tell you the truth. I lied about needing the blood from an infant's heart to restore my health. Every time it was sent to me, I poured it away. Something so disgusting wasn't fit to pass my lips."Well, how does it feel to have murdered five of your own children with your own hands?" Tristan's grip on her throat tightened. For a moment, he genuinely wanted to strangle her to death. "Go on. Kill me," Rosalind taunted, not even struggling. "Once I see Gerald and Mr. Shelby in the afterlife,

Alarmed, Tristan's agent rushed forward to support him. "My lord! Please, you must take care of yourself!"Tristan tried to shove them away, but he no longer had the strength to do so. Every breath sent a sharp, throbbing pain through his chest. He let out a heart-wrenching cry right in front of his guards as memories of his time with my family came rushing back. My parents had always treated him as their own son.Even my brother, Thomas, had once told him, "I wouldn't trust anyone else with my sister, but I trust you. You're the only man I'd feel comfortable leaving her with."Don't make me regret putting my faith in you. If you ever mistreat her, I'll haunt you for the rest of your life!"Yet because Tristan had refused to trust us, my entire family had been thrown into prison. Even after death, their bodies had been subjected to the most degrading treatment. The truth had come to light just four hours after my death. If only the truth had been revealed four hours earli

As Tristan bombarded the royal physician with questions, he watched the physician intently, clinging to the faintest hope like a drowning man grasping at a lifeline. He wanted the royal physician to nod. He wanted him to say that I had taken some kind of death-inducing potion, that I was only pretending to be dead. The royal physician sank to the floor, sweat pouring down his face. "My lord, I've only ever heard of such a potion," he finally said in a trembling voice. "I've never seen one myself. Besides, its effects can last no longer than 12 hours. The pulse may grow faint, but it's still there and can be detected with a careful examination."But this lady's pulse… it's truly gone."The light in Tristan's eyes faded once more. He swayed, barely steadying himself against the bedpost. With a wave of his hand, he dismissed the royal physician. Only then did Tristan drop to his knees with a heavy thud. "I'll wait 12 hours for you," he murmured. "Just 12 hours. Then you'll wak

Tristan caught my limp body just in time, dropping to one knee as he cradled me in his arms."Isolde! Wake up!" he shouted. "What good will pretending to be unconscious do? Get up and look. Look at what's happened!"When my family's bodies were burned, I hid behind the ornamental rocks in the garden and watched everything with my own eyes. Who do you think you are to faint now? Get up!"Tears spilled down his cheeks as he continued shaking me, but I never responded. Now, I could only watch everything unfold as a disembodied soul. I had to admit, in the instant I died, all I felt was relief. And yet, I still couldn't bring myself to look at the execution grounds. I was powerless, and all I could do was run away. "System, why am I still here?" I asked, turning my back on the execution grounds and trying to make myself as small as possible."Data deletion in progress. Once the process is complete, you may return to your original world."When Tristan realized I still wasn't re

I sat up, my head still spinning, but forced myself out of bed. No matter what, I had to see my family one last time. I'd barely taken two steps when the door burst open. Tristan stormed in, seized me by the throat, and slammed me against the edge of the bed. "Rosalind was kind enough to pay her respects to your child, and you had the nerve to push her!" Tristan roared. "She's only just found out she's pregnant! How could you be so heartless? You vile, vicious woman!"Do you have any idea that you've just killed another member of my family?"So he was capable of mourning a dead child after all. He knew how much it hurt a mother to lose her baby. When Rosalind lost hers, it was my fault. He blamed me for being a heartless monster. But when my babies died, they said it was karma and that it was a sign that I was never meant to have children. The absurdity of this was beyond me. "Why aren't you saying anything?" Tristan hissed, pain and hatred warring in his eyes. "Aren't
