Chapter 3

Author: Dawn Ether
A tiny bundle lay in the center of the table.

The baby's face was mottled blue and purple, and his eyes hadn't fully closed. He looked so much like me, as though he'd inherited all my features.

I couldn't help but step forward, wanting to hold him just once.

But one of the priests immediately blocked my way.

"This child has passed beyond the world of the living. You must not touch him again."

"How are you going to bury him?"

"Since the child died a violent death, we've prepared a funeral pyre. Once his body has been reduced to ashes, his spirit will have no reason to linger among the living."

I stopped breathing.

"Once his body is reduced to ashes?" I echoed, my voice trembling uncontrollably.

Tears streamed down my face as I stared at his tiny features. He'd died such a horrible death because of me. I'd failed him as his mother.

I'd spent three days begging Tristan to let me into the Shelby estate, clinging to his cruel promise that each child I bore would earn the freedom of one member of my imprisoned family.

I'd carried my child for nine months, only to bring him into the world and watch him die. If it weren't for me, he wouldn't have suffered such a fate.

And now they wanted to burn his body, leaving him with no chance to rest in peace.

"I'm sorry…" I croaked, barely recognizing my own voice. "I'm sorry I couldn't protect you, sweetheart. I'm the one who got you killed."

Before I knew it, I was holding him in my arms.

"No!" I screamed. "You can't burn him. Nobody is allowed to touch him… I'm taking him with me!"

"Ma'am! You mustn't disrupt the funeral rites!"

The priests cried out and hurried after me.

I'd barely made it out of the memorial hall when I nearly collided with Rosalind. She stumbled backward before we even touched, and her fur cloak slipped to the ground.

The maids and older servants behind her immediately burst into commotion.

"My lady! Are you hurt?"

"Someone stop her! Quickly!"

The situation was only brought under control when Tristan arrived. He gathered Rosalind, who was trembling with fright, into his arms. Then he ordered the guards to restrain me and snatched the baby from my grasp.

"Tristan, I only came to pay my respects to the baby," Rosalind sobbed. "She deliberately tried to push me!"

"I didn't push her!" I cried. "Tristan, please, give our baby a proper burial. We've already failed him so terribly. How can we possibly—"

"The only person who failed him was you," he cut me off in a low voice.

He bent down until we were eye to eye, hatred burning in his gaze.

"You killed him. Your father killed him. Your entire family is responsible for his death."

His hatred for me had grown so deep that he could no longer see reason.

I stood frozen, unable to utter a word.

Rosalind suddenly covered her mouth and retched.

"Ms. Reed had only just discovered she's with child," an older servant said as she hurried to Rosalind's side. "After such a fright, she needs to rest."

Slowly, I turned to look at Rosalind's stomach.

My baby had just died, yet they already had another child on the way. My child couldn't even rest in peace, but their child would be born into a world of love and indulgence.

Tristan would carve little wooden rocking horses for him with his own hands. He would teach him to fight, perhaps even to wield a whip.

I'd spent six years fighting to save my family, only to lose five children. Not one of them had lived long enough to see daylight.

My heart seemed to stop beating. Every breath became an unbearable struggle.

Tristan swept Rosalind into his arms and carried her away. As he passed me, he tossed one final remark over his shoulder.

"Rosalind's child will be the only one I acknowledge," he declared. "There's a room full of children's toys in your quarters, isn't there? Have them all removed."

I tried to protest, but the priests had already taken the baby back.

They laid strips of parchment with sacred symbols over the swaddling cloth, then placed the bundle on the pyre.

"No!" I screamed. "Please, no!"

I wrenched myself free of the guards and lunged toward the flames, but I was so overwhelmed by grief and fury that I spat out a mouthful of blood.

As I collapsed, I faintly heard someone cry out in anguish. For a fleeting moment, I thought I saw Tristan rushing toward me, desperate to catch me before I hit the ground.

It must have been a hallucination.

My consciousness drifted into darkness, and I found myself back in the past.

Tristan and I had grown up together, fallen in love, and eventually confessed our feelings for each other.

Everything had gone smoothly until the day of our wedding.

I was already in the bridal carriage, on my way to marry Tristan, when Father led his troops to surround the Shelby estate.

That day, blood stained every corner of the estate.

I helped Tristan escape, and he vanished for three years.

When he finally returned, he had become the most powerful man in the kingdom, with the entire court under his control.

Father knew Tristan would seek revenge and had just finished gathering the evidence that would reveal the truth, but Tristan burned it all before anyone could see it.

Then he had my entire family imprisoned, leaving me alone. He wanted to strip away every source of support until I had no choice but to turn to him.

On my first night at his estate, he took me by force until I lost consciousness.

Before I lost consciousness, he whispered in my ear, "Isolde, we're enemies until one of us dies."

"Two hours remain before your forced departure. Please prepare yourself."

The system's announcement jolted me awake.

Only then did I realize I'd been unconscious for over two days.

Before King Arthur could say another word, Tristan drove the dagger all the way into his chest. To make sure King Arthur was dead, Tristan dragged his body to the execution grounds and ordered his head cut off. Then, carrying the severed head, he strode out of the palace as though he owned the place. Those who witnessed the scene could only stare in horror. To them, Tristan looked like the devil himself, risen from hell. After putting down the rebellions led by the first and third princes, Tristan helped the seventh prince, who had only just come of age, ascend the throne. Then he cleared the Moore family's name. The common people, however, knew nothing about the intricate power struggle between the royal family and the great noble houses. All they knew was that they were baffled. Barely six months ago, the Moore family had been brutally executed on Tristan's orders. How, then, could they suddenly be declared innocent? No one could give them an answer. Soon afterward, Tr

"If it weren't for you, Isolde would never have had to witness any of this," Tristan snarled, clamping a hand around Rosalind's throat. "Why would you do such a thing? How could you be so cruel?"To his surprise, Rosalind summoned enough strength to shove him away. Her hair had come loose, but she couldn't care less."Have you forgotten that you murdered all five of your own children?" she spat. "Stop pretending to be a righteous man! If I'm cruel, it's only because I learned from you!"Let me tell you the truth. I lied about needing the blood from an infant's heart to restore my health. Every time it was sent to me, I poured it away. Something so disgusting wasn't fit to pass my lips."Well, how does it feel to have murdered five of your own children with your own hands?" Tristan's grip on her throat tightened. For a moment, he genuinely wanted to strangle her to death. "Go on. Kill me," Rosalind taunted, not even struggling. "Once I see Gerald and Mr. Shelby in the afterlife,

Alarmed, Tristan's agent rushed forward to support him. "My lord! Please, you must take care of yourself!"Tristan tried to shove them away, but he no longer had the strength to do so. Every breath sent a sharp, throbbing pain through his chest. He let out a heart-wrenching cry right in front of his guards as memories of his time with my family came rushing back. My parents had always treated him as their own son.Even my brother, Thomas, had once told him, "I wouldn't trust anyone else with my sister, but I trust you. You're the only man I'd feel comfortable leaving her with."Don't make me regret putting my faith in you. If you ever mistreat her, I'll haunt you for the rest of your life!"Yet because Tristan had refused to trust us, my entire family had been thrown into prison. Even after death, their bodies had been subjected to the most degrading treatment. The truth had come to light just four hours after my death. If only the truth had been revealed four hours earli

As Tristan bombarded the royal physician with questions, he watched the physician intently, clinging to the faintest hope like a drowning man grasping at a lifeline. He wanted the royal physician to nod. He wanted him to say that I had taken some kind of death-inducing potion, that I was only pretending to be dead. The royal physician sank to the floor, sweat pouring down his face. "My lord, I've only ever heard of such a potion," he finally said in a trembling voice. "I've never seen one myself. Besides, its effects can last no longer than 12 hours. The pulse may grow faint, but it's still there and can be detected with a careful examination."But this lady's pulse… it's truly gone."The light in Tristan's eyes faded once more. He swayed, barely steadying himself against the bedpost. With a wave of his hand, he dismissed the royal physician. Only then did Tristan drop to his knees with a heavy thud. "I'll wait 12 hours for you," he murmured. "Just 12 hours. Then you'll wak

Tristan caught my limp body just in time, dropping to one knee as he cradled me in his arms."Isolde! Wake up!" he shouted. "What good will pretending to be unconscious do? Get up and look. Look at what's happened!"When my family's bodies were burned, I hid behind the ornamental rocks in the garden and watched everything with my own eyes. Who do you think you are to faint now? Get up!"Tears spilled down his cheeks as he continued shaking me, but I never responded. Now, I could only watch everything unfold as a disembodied soul. I had to admit, in the instant I died, all I felt was relief. And yet, I still couldn't bring myself to look at the execution grounds. I was powerless, and all I could do was run away. "System, why am I still here?" I asked, turning my back on the execution grounds and trying to make myself as small as possible."Data deletion in progress. Once the process is complete, you may return to your original world."When Tristan realized I still wasn't re

  • Bearing His Heirs to Buy My Family's Lives   Chapter 4

I sat up, my head still spinning, but forced myself out of bed. No matter what, I had to see my family one last time. I'd barely taken two steps when the door burst open. Tristan stormed in, seized me by the throat, and slammed me against the edge of the bed. "Rosalind was kind enough to pay her respects to your child, and you had the nerve to push her!" Tristan roared. "She's only just found out she's pregnant! How could you be so heartless? You vile, vicious woman!"Do you have any idea that you've just killed another member of my family?"So he was capable of mourning a dead child after all. He knew how much it hurt a mother to lose her baby. When Rosalind lost hers, it was my fault. He blamed me for being a heartless monster. But when my babies died, they said it was karma and that it was a sign that I was never meant to have children. The absurdity of this was beyond me. "Why aren't you saying anything?" Tristan hissed, pain and hatred warring in his eyes. "Aren't
