The question threw Marybeth for a loop.

She sat there, her mouth agape and eyes wide, wondering if she'd heard her ex right.

It would have been have been wise if Austin had filled her in on the trith more thoroughly then just telly her that the lipstick on his shirt belonged to his ex whom he broke it off with, it would not have hurt so bad when Eli rubbed her face in it.
