"Bring her."

Two words. Quiet. Final. Elena would spend the rest of her life understanding that a sentence didn't need volume to end a world, it only needed the right man saying it.

Earlier that evening

Rain hammered against the broken window like it wanted to break inside too.

Elena stood barefoot in the hallway of their small house, listening. Somewhere beyond the thin walls, she could hear the neighbors' television still on despite the hour, the same tinny laugh track that leaked through every night in this part of the city, where the houses stood close enough together that nobody's business ever stayed entirely private.

Voices, loud, angry, rough, carried through the thin wall from the front room. Her mother was crying again. And her father was begging.

It had been building toward this for months, if she was honest with herself, the unpaid bills, the empty spaces in the cupboard where groceries used to be, the increasingly hollow promises her father made every time she caught him with his phone pressed too close to his ear, voice pitched low with the particular desperation of a man still chasing the hand that would fix everything.

She'd never known the exact number he owed, or to whom.

Tonight, apparently, she was about to find out both.

"No, please, please, I'll find the money, just give me time!"

A heavy thud echoed through the house. Elena froze. Something dragged across the floor. Then a voice cut through everything else, calm in a way that made the rest of the noise seem smaller.

"You've already wasted time."

She didn't know why her body moved before her mind did. She stepped closer, carefully, quietly, and looked through the gap in the doorway.

Three men in black stood in the front room, expensive coats, clean shoes, faces that gave away nothing.

And in the center of it all, a man sat on their old broken couch like he owned the entire building around it.

Elena didn't know his name. But she 'knew' of him. Everyone did, the kind of man people prayed they would never come to owe.

Luca Moreau. She'd heard it before, whispered at the market, seen it once on the glass front of an office tower downtown that looked far too respectable for what everyone understood it actually was, some kind of private lending business, the polite name people gave to men who bought and collected debts however they pleased.

She'd never imagined she would see him sitting in her own living room, in a house so small his presence alone seemed to use up all the air in it.

He wasn't yelling. He wasn't even standing. And yet somehow he was the only presence in the room that mattered.

Her father knelt in front of him, bruised, blood at the corner of his mouth, shaking. "Please," he said again, voice breaking. "I have a daughter. I have a wife. I can fix this."

One of the men kicked him, lightly, almost gently, not to hurt him further, just to remind him where he was.

Elena's stomach twisted. Fix this. Her father couldn't even fix himself.

Luca leaned back slightly, gaze indifferent as he studied a paper in his hand. "I'm not interested in your promises," he said, quietly. His voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. "Only results."

Silence stretched through the house, broken only by the rain against the glass and, faintly, the neighbor's television still murmuring through the wall.

Then her father looked up. And for the first time, his eyes found Elena in the doorway.

She stepped back instantly.

Something in his expression changed. Not sadness. Not guilt. Something worse.

Decision.

"Wait, no.." she whispered, but it was already too late.

Her father pushed himself up on shaking hands and pointed at her.

"There," he said quickly. "Take her."

The room went still. Even Luca didn't move right away.

Elena blinked. Once. Twice. "…What?"

Her mother screamed from somewhere behind her. "NO!"

But her father kept going, voice cracking, refusing to stop. "She's young. She's healthy. Take her instead of me." He was staring at Luca now like a drowning man finally seeing land. "You can do anything you want with her," he said, desperate, breathless. "Just, just let me go."

Something inside Elena stopped working properly. Like a wire snapping. Like breath forgetting how to exist.

"…Dad?"

Her voice came out small. Broken. But her father wouldn't look at her, couldn't, or wouldn't, and somehow that was worse than anything else in the room.

She turned toward her mother instead, who was crying too hard to stand properly, one hand braced against the wall. And no one was coming. No one was going to stop this.

Elena laughed once. It wasn't humor. It was disbelief.

"So that's it?" she whispered. "That's all I am to you?"

Still nothing. Just silence, and the rain, and her father's ragged breathing.

Luca rose then, slowly, and the whole room seemed to shift with him, like gravity had quietly rearranged itself around where he chose to stand. He looked at Elena for the first time. Really looked. Not like a girl. Not like a daughter, but like a decision he hadn't finished making yet.

The pause stretched long and heavy between them. Elena didn't cry. She didn't scream. She only stood there, exhausted in a way she didn't know a person could be at twenty three, the same bone, deep exhaustion she'd met once before, two years ago, in the cramped bathroom of this same house, when she'd tried to end her life and failed, and had never quite finished deciding whether that had been a mercy or not.

Too tired to fight. Too tired to care.

"Are you afraid?" Luca asked.

Elena almost laughed again. Afraid? She had been afraid her whole life. But right now, standing here, she was just empty.

"No," she said quietly.

That made his eyes narrow slightly. Interesting.

Her father interrupted before the silence could settle. "She'll listen," he said quickly. "She'll do whatever you say. She won't cause trouble."

Elena looked at him slowly, like she was trying to understand a stranger speaking her own language back to her, badly.

"…You really did this," she whispered. "You really sold me."

Her father flinched. He didn't deny it.

Luca's gaze stayed on her, unmoving, calculating something she had no access to. Then, finally, he spoke, but not the words she expected.

He didn't ask her father anything more. He simply waited, watching her, as if the only opinion left in the room worth weighing was hers.

Elena looked past him, at her mother sobbing against the wall, at her father still trembling on his knees, and something in her chest went very quiet and very still. She was so tired. She had been tired for longer than tonight, longer than this house, longer than this street of identical narrow rooftops, longer than she had words for.

If this could end it, if this could buy her mother one more year of medicine, her father one more breath he didn't deserve, then it hardly mattered what happened to her afterward. She had stopped being someone worth protecting a long time before tonight. She had simply never said it out loud.

She stepped forward, past her father, until she stood in front of Luca, close enough to see that his eyes weren't cruel so much as entirely, patiently empty.

"If I go with you," she said, her voice steadier than she felt, "will you leave them alone?"

He studied her for a long moment. Long enough that Elena wondered if he'd even answer at all.

"Your father's debt would be settled," he said. "What happens to him afterward depends entirely on whether he's foolish enough to create a new one."

It wasn't a promise. It wasn't even close to a kindness. But it was the only answer she was going to get, and Elena understood, standing there in the wreckage of everything she used to call her life, that it would have to be enough.

She didn't look back at her father again. She didn't need to. Whatever she might have felt for him had already drained out of her the moment his hand had lifted to point at her, steady and certain, in front of a stranger who bought debts for a living.

Luca turned to the men flanking him.

"Bring her."

Nobody had to drag her. Elena walked toward him on her own legs, past the ruin of her father's begging, past her mother's screaming, and didn't look back at either of them.

Outside, the rain was colder than she'd expected.

A black car waited at the curb, engine running, and one of the men opened the door for her without a word.

Elena hesitated for exactly one second, the last second, she understood, that would ever belong entirely to her and then she got in.

The door closed behind her with a sound she felt more than heard. Somewhere ahead of them, past the rain streaked glass, an entire life she hadn't chosen was already waiting to begin, and behind her, the world she'd known disappeared into the dark without so much as a light left on to mark where it used to stand.

Luca settled into the seat across from her, unhurried, watching her through the water running down the window as the car pulled away from the curb, as if, in his mind, she had already belonged to him long before tonight ever happened.

  • Beautifully Ruined : Bound by The Mafia's Debt   CHAPTER 47 - WAITING FOR NOTHING

Elena noticed the pattern before she let herself name it, the particular, unwelcome rhythm of her own evenings rearranging themselves around a knock that had stopped coming. It had been three weeks since Luca had last come to her room at night, not since the shooting, not since the long, careful weeks of recovery that had filled their hours instead with physical therapy sessions and quiet, businesslike visits that never once extended into anything resembling what their nights used to be. Elena told herself, in the beginning, that this was simply practical, a wound healing, a body not yet ready for anything that might strain it. She told herself that for the first two weeks, and mostly believed it.By the third week, she found herself doing something she couldn't fully explain even to herself. She'd catch herself, some evenings, washing longer than the day's grime actually required, applying the small vial of perfume Mrs. Bianchi had once given her for an occasion Elena could no long

  • Beautifully Ruined : Bound by The Mafia's Debt   CHAPTER 46 - THE LEDGER

Six weeks after the attack, Elena's shoulder had healed enough that the physical therapist, finally cleared her for light duty around the house, and Elena understood, the first morning she returned to her old rhythm of chores, exactly how much she'd missed the simple, uncomplicated relief of having her hands occupied with something other than waiting. She found Mrs. Bianchi in the kitchen, exactly where she'd expected her, and the older woman's face softened briefly at the sight of her before settling back into its usual severity."About time," Mrs. Bianchi said. "This kitchen's been running short handed for weeks, and I've had to listen to considerably more complaining about it than I care to repeat.""I've missed complaining about the silver," Elena said, and meant it, settling into the familiar rhythm of the morning's tasks with a gratitude that surprised her.The morning passed in a comfortable, uncomplicated rhythm Elena hadn't realized how badly she'd missed, counters scrubbed a

  • Beautifully Ruined : Bound by The Mafia's Debt   CHAPTER 45 - ACCOUNTED FOR

The first time Luca forbade her from leaving the mansion grounds entirely, Elena understood, standing in his study listening to him lay out the new restriction with the same unhurried certainty he brought to everything, that whatever careful balance had existed between them before the attack had shifted into something considerably more absolute."I want to walk in the garden without an escort," Elena said, keeping her voice level despite the frustration building beneath it. "I'm not asking to leave the grounds, Luca. I'm asking to walk fifty feet from this house without someone standing three paces behind me.""No." Luca didn't look up from the papers on his desk, the single word carrying no room for negotiation at all."Why not?" Elena ask."Because the leak that got you shot hasn't been resolved yet." Luca finally set down his pen, his eyes lifting to meet hers with the particular, flat intensity she'd learned to recognize as the outer edge of his patience. "Because whoever betrayed

  • Beautifully Ruined : Bound by The Mafia's Debt   CHAPTER 44 - SOMETHING THAT HE CAN'T EXPLAIN

Elena's physical therapy sessions had become, over the following weeks, the one part of her day she found herself dreading and, in some more complicated way, needing, dreading the pain of it, needing the small, measurable proof that her body was slowly, stubbornly rebuilding itself."You're favoring the shoulder again," the therapist said, one afternoon, watching Elena wince through a stretch she'd managed considerably better the day before. "You need to push through the discomfort, or the muscle won't rebuild the range of motion it needs.""It hurts," Elena said, though she kept moving anyway, some old, stubborn instinct refusing to let the observation stop her."Pain and damage aren't the same thing," Luca said, from the chair he'd claimed near the window, not looking up from the papers balanced on his knee. "You've told me that yourself, more than once, about considerably worse things than a stretching exercise."Elena glanced at him, something wry pulling at her mouth despite the

  • Beautifully Ruined : Bound by The Mafia's Debt   CHAPTER 43 - TELL HER, LUCA !

Marchetti had been standing post outside Elena's recovery room for three weeks now, and he'd learned, in that time, more about the particular texture of this house's quiet war than he'd expected a guard assignment to teach him.He noticed the pattern of Luca's visits first, unfailingly regular, twice daily at minimum, sometimes lingering considerably longer than the brief check in his early visits had been. He noticed, too, the particular way Luca's voice changed the moment he crossed that threshold, softer than the flat, controlled tone Marchetti was used to hearing him use with everyone else in this house, staff and enemies alike, a voice reserved, as far as Marchetti could tell, for exactly one person. He'd worked for Luca Moreau for nearly three years, long enough to have developed a careful, practiced instinct for reading the man's moods from a distance, the particular set of his shoulders before a difficult negotiation, the flat, unhurried calm that preceded violence, the brisk

  • Beautifully Ruined : Bound by The Mafia's Debt   CHAPTER 42 - SAFER WITH HIM

The nightmares started on the fifth night, and Elena understood, waking gasping in the dark with her shoulder screaming from the sudden, violent motion of sitting upright, that whatever calm she'd managed during her waking hours hadn't extended nearly as far into sleep as she'd hoped. She dreamed of the corridor. Not the shot itself, strangely, but the moment just before it, the particular, suspended awareness of the barrel swinging toward Luca's back, the half-second in which her body had already decided to move before her mind had finished processing the danger. In the dream, she was always half a step too slow. In the dream, the bullet always found him instead of her, and she woke each time to the same visceral, gasping relief that it hadn't, tangled inseparably with the horror of watching it happen anyway, over and over, in whatever version of the night her sleeping mind insisted on replaying. The door opened before she'd fully caught her breath, the guard stationed outside app
