NATASHA'S POV

I did some reading and research to keep myself occupied before my siblings got home.

It wasn't like I learnt anything in school anyway. Not for the first time, I was beginning to think if staying at home wouldn't have been best.

But then, it was better than nothing. There were no colleges in the middle district. Which left only Delengade.

Other middle class kids gave up on school after high school but I didn't want to.

I wanted a chance at a better life and a chance to escape this cruel classist society.

I dreamt of Delengade being free of it someday. But right now, I felt like those dreams were about to go up in flames.

Piper and Bart soon returned and they ended up annoying the hell out of me. I asked myself why I missed them.

And then they started to bug me about Peter.

“You still haven't told us about your new friend, sis.” Piper chirped as she dropped onto the sofa beside me.

She had a bowl of cereal in her hand, but her eyes were fastened on me, like I was a piece

NATASHA'S POVI couldn't concentrate the whole time Professor Cain was speaking. How could I?Just looking at him reminded me how he betrayed me to Sasha. And how everything happening and was about to happen was his fault. And I couldn't concentrate either because the moment Professor Cain left, Meredith's torture would continue and Sasha could arrive any moment now.Professor Cain already proved that he couldn't stand up to Sasha. He was afraid of her. Why he would be was a mystery to me. I mean, she had to have something on him, right? Why else would Professor Cain be afraid of Sasha just because she was his niece or the most powerful elite?Whatever it was, I didn't care. I just wished I hadn't been dragged into their family issues or whatever. If only I had known he had a connection to Sasha, I would have avoided him at all cost.Did he hide his connection with her on purpose? Was it because he had bad intentions or he knew if I knew, I would have kept my distance?None of that

  • Beauty From Ashes    Chapter Sixty Five

NATASHA'S POVMy first day back in school went by without much incident from the start.I woke up earlier than anyone and left before anyone was up because I didn't want to argue with my mom again about it.I walked to school alone and got to school when only a few people were in school. When I got to class, there were barely any students in class, except for about three of them. They all turned to stare at me when I walked in and started whispering amongst themselves.I swallowed nervously. At least they weren't staring at me with hate, but disbelief. They must think I'm crazy. I grimaced. I had to be. Only a crazy person would have chosen to return after what happened.Time passed by and I waited, while reading a book for the first lesson.Meredith walked in several hours later and stopped right in front of me. I thought of ignoring her but decided ignoring her would only make her angrier. So, I looked up at her and waited, my heart beating widely. She laughed wickedly as her eyes

NATASHA'S POV I shut my eyes as tightly as I could and tried to feign sleep. I tried to remember if I snored, so I could add it in for effect but I couldn't.Hopefully, Mom would buy the act and leave. Did she figure out that it was all a ruse? The diversion and me sneaking off to my room?Yikes. If she insisted on talking tonight, I had no idea what I was going to say…“I guess you're asleep, dear. We'll talk tomorrow. You're not going to get out of it, you hear me?” I heard her footsteps and knew she was walking away and I finally breathed a sigh of relief. My eyes widened when I realized. She knew. If she really believed I was asleep, she wouldn't make a show of telling me we had to talk tomorrow. She even said I wouldn't be able to get out of it. She would have walked away quietly after knocking and not getting a reply.I groaned into my pillow. This was bad! She would only be more suspicious now that she realized I tried to get out of talking about my suspension.I would have t

NATASHA'S POV“I'm fine, Mom, Dad. Stop worrying about me. Let's just eat.” I said.I was nowhere close to convincing them and it was evident on the worried looks on their faces.I admit I didn't give them much to go on. My explanation was vague. I only mentioned that I got suspended and then I mumbled something about getting in trouble with an elite. If I was being honest, that wasn't much to go on. But then what could I do?For the umpteenth time, I couldn't tell them the truth.I smiled tightly and my eyes traveled to Piper.‘Help me out here.’ I pleaded with my eyes. Piper was good with distractions. It wouldn't get me out of being questioned but it would be enough at least for tonight and I could find time to slip to my room and pretend to be asleep.Piper rolled her eyes, and immediately brought something up, something Mom couldn't resist.Dad would naturally forget about the conservation too if Mom got distracted enough.Piper made up some story about a classmate she suspected

NATASHA'S POVI knew I couldn't hide the fact that I had been suspended from school for long. Not even for a night. I couldn't lie to my parents like that and they would figure it out anyway.I locked myself in my room and pretended to be asleep when my siblings came back to avoid talking to them.I didn't come out until it was dinner time either. I tried to put on a smile and pretend like everything was okay and even laughed at Dad's jokes as usual and contributed to conversations as usual. But they noticed something was off. I couldn't pretend when it came to them.“What's going on, Nat? You locked yourself up in your room all day pretending to be asleep. What's wrong?”That was my mom. I smiled faintly as I tried to force another spoon into my mouth.“I'm fine, mom. I'm just a little under the weather. I'll be fine.” I said.I was only prolonging the inevitable. It was only a matter of time before I spilled about being suspended.“Are you sure? You look physically fine to me.” She

  • Beauty From Ashes    Chapter Sixty One

NATASHA'S POVIt was just I and my thoughts for company till someone got home. I thought of calling Peter but then I felt like I would be bothering him.We weren't that close. Besides, I wasn't sure he would help. He might not want to cross Sasha. He did say I could call him if I needed anything. Maybe I should call him…I was lying on my bed and staring up at the ceiling, and I had to get up to get to my phone which I left in my bag.I couldn't call it a phone, exactly. It was more like an embarrassment. So much so I rarely remembered I had one.I took the phone and returned to bed and dialed Peter's number. He picked up on the third ring.“Hey you. Seeing as you called, you must miss me.” He teased, chuckling quietly.I rolled my eyes but I couldn't help but smile as I laid back against the bed.“I don't miss you. I'm just bored. I have no one to talk to.” I said.“Why? What about Layla?” He asked.I let out a sigh as I traced invisible circles in the air.“We don't offer the same m
