I shoved the doors open and there he was, standing by the window like a sad, beautiful vampire who’d lost his cape.

He turned.

“You came.”

The way he said it (like I’d just handed him oxygen) made my stomach do a backflip.

“I said I would,” I squeaked, then immediately wanted to evaporate.

We sat.

Across from each other.

The chairs felt too close and too far at the same time.

I opened the notebook.

Closed it.

Opened it again.

My hands were shaking.

The pen looked like it was having a seizure.

He just… stared.

I stared back.

Staring competition. Great start, Ariana. Ten out of ten professionalism.

What do I ask what do I ask what do I ask.

Childhood trauma?

NO. Too fast. He’ll yeet me out the window.

Hobbies?

Yes. Soft questions first. Hard ones later.

I’m a genius. A sweaty, terrified genius.

I cleared my throat so hard it sounded like a dying goose.

“So… any, uh… hobbies?”

He blinked.

Once.

Slow.

Then the corner of his mouth twitched.

Like I’d just asked the king of lycans if he collects stamps.

I was going to die.

This was how I died.

Except I didn't, because in the next moment, I heard him say,

“I write poems,” he said, voice low, almost shy. “A lot.”

The murder king writes poems.

My brain short-circuited so hard I felt the smoke coming out my ears.

I just stared.

Mouth open.

Pen frozen mid-air.

He glanced up, saw my face, and his eyes went downcast like a kicked puppy wearing a crown.

“Good… good,” I managed, voice cracking like a thirteen-year-old. “Poems are… words. Beautiful words. Very… wordy.”

His lips twitched, but the sadness stayed.

Then he dropped the bomb.

“I’m sorry,” he said, barely above a whisper. “Two nights ago… I hurt you. Badly. I’m so sorry.”

My brain blue-screened.

He was apologizing.

The guy who almost turned me into a human PEZ dispenser was apologizing.

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Just a tiny squeak that probably sounded like a dying mouse.

His ears—his actual ears—went pink at the tips.

Cute, my traitor brain supplied.

No no no, focus, he almost murdered you, do NOT find the murder king cute—

“It’s fine,” I blurted. “It’s...it’s fine. You stopped. That means you can control it. To some extent. Which is… good. Great. Super."

Bree was losing her tiny wolf mind in my chest.

(Hug mate! Mate is sad! Hug him now!)

Bree, I swear to god, I will muzzle you. I’m already light-headed, do not make me pass out in front of the hot—DANGEROUS—king.

I gripped the notebook so hard the spiral started bending.

He was still looking at the floor, shoulders curled in like he was waiting for me to scream or run.

I couldn’t scream.

I couldn’t run.

Because the apology in his voice was real.

And for one stupid, terrifying second,

I believed he meant it.

The silence after his apology stretched like a burnt chicken’s funeral: thick, smoky, and nobody knew what to say.

Then the little bell on the mantel chimed.

Hour over.

Freedom.

I shot up so fast the chair screeched.

Notebook to chest. Ready to bolt.

“Lady Elena.”

His voice stopped me at the door.

I turned.

He was standing now, rubbing the back of his neck like a nervous teenager who’d just grown into his shoulders.

“Would you… walk with me? In the garden?”

He kept talking, words tumbling out. “I’m sure you haven’t seen the whole palace, and with your mother and sister only visiting once a week, you must get lonely—”

He was rambling.

The cold-blooded murder king was rambling.

My brain short-circuited.

(Mate loves us mate loves us mate loves us)

Bree was basically doing cartwheels in my ribcage.

Bree, I swear on instant noodles, I will sedate you.

Roundy?

Dead. Silence.

Weird.

I looked at Kael.

Big violet eyes. Pink-tipped ears.

Waiting.

There was no harm in a walk… right?

But he’s the king.

What if the guards see me using their monarch as a personal tour guide?

Do they chop heads for that?

Is that still a thing?

(You’re his mate, you’re basically the Luna!)

Bree, I am NOT the Luna, I am a walking identity crisis, shut UP.

I swallowed.

“Yes,” I heard myself say. “I’d love to, Kael.”

His whole face lit up.

Like I’d just handed him the moon with extra cheese.

We walked side by side down the corridor.

Our hands swinging.

Almost touching.

Almost.

Almost.

Every time our knuckles brushed, tiny fireworks went off in my veins.

I was so doomed.

And the worst part?

I couldn’t stop smiling.

Wait—what? Why am I smiling like an idiot?

Cold face. Cold face. Professional. Ice queen. Do not grin at the murder king.

I wiped the goofy smile off so fast my cheeks hurt.

Then I heard it.

Low, warm laughter.

I whipped around.

Kael was laughing. At me.

Head tilted, eyes crinkled, the whole devastating package.

Understandable. He’s crazy, after all.

Bree wouldn’t shut up either, just a constant purr rattling my ribs like a happy lawnmower.

We kept walking.

The palace opened up in full ridiculous glory: marble everything, chandeliers that probably cost more than small countries, maids scurrying like scared mice.

Then we passed the training hall.

Doors wide open.

Shirtless lycans sparring.

Sweaty.

Grunting.

Abs for days.

I stopped.

Stared.

Mouth open like a cartoon character.

Someone growled.

Low. Possessive. Right behind me.

I jumped a foot in the air, slipped on literally nothing, and started falling backward like a drunk flamingo.

Oh god oh god I’m dying, fake psychiatrist found dead in palace hallway, headline writes itself—

A hand snatched my waist mid-air.

Warm.

Strong.

Lavender and something wild.

I opened my eyes.

Violet eyes.

Lavender scent.

Kael.

His arm locked around me like I weighed nothing.

My back against his chest.

My brain:

ERROR 404. BRAIN NOT FOUND.

Bree: full-on howling (MATE MATE MATE)

I squeaked. Actually squeaked.

He didn’t let go.

His voice rumbled against my spine.

“Careful.”

I was on fire.

Everywhere.

I was never going to recover from this.

ELENAToday didn’t start off well.So many questions swirled in my head, heavy and unanswered, pressing down like a storm cloud I couldn’t shake.Bree’s words from earlier this morning echoed, confusing and heartbreaking. The dream. The past that wasn’t mine but felt like it was.I dragged myself out of bed late, stomach growling but heart heavier.Rich people didn’t have it easy, I thought wryly as I headed down for a meal, trying to lighten the mood in my own head.It didn’t work. The dining hall was bright with morning light, table set for breakfast, pastries, fruits, coffee that smelled like heaven. But the whole family was there.Like they were waiting. For me.Father at the head, those strange eyes fixed on me the second I appeared, intense and unreadable, sending that familiar chill skittering down my spine.Mother beside him, smiling her warm, motherly smile, eyes soft and hopeful, like she was afraid I’d vanish again.Liora across from her, focused on a thick book, black hair

KAELI couldn’t fall asleep last night. The phone sat on my nightstand, screen dark, but her messages burned bright in my mind.Yes.Yes.Simple words. But they lit me up like nothing had in years. She agreed to go out with me.Excitement buzzed under my skin, warm and restless, keeping me awake until dawn crept through the windows.I wish we could go to the movies today.Right now.But I needed to prepare. The movie date had to be perfect. No guards too close. No interruptions. No reminders of crowns or monsters or assassins.Just us.For once.I rolled out of bed early, showered, dressed in something simple—dark shirt, jeans, nothing that screamed king.Liam was already waiting outside the door with coffee and the day’s schedule.I took the cup, couldn’t hide the smile tugging at my lips.He glanced at me once. Then stared, expression flat but eyes screaming disbelief.Exasperated.As expected.I sipped the coffee, still smiling.Such a rude assistant, I thought, amusement flickerin

  • Became His Mate By Accident    Who Is Elena Really?

ELENA“Ice isn’t someone you ask casually, Leny,” he said. His voice was low now, all the playfulness drained away. The warmth in his eyes had turned serious, almost protective. My heart skipped, a chill creeping up despite the cozy room.“You can be killed for casually mentioning her name.”What?Killed? The word hung in the air, heavy and ridiculous and terrifying all at once.I stared at him, mouth half-open, trying to process.“Brother… killed?”He nodded once, expression softening just a fraction.“Yes. She’s an assassin.”He reached over, ruffled my hair again like I was still little, but gentler this time.“But you don’t need to worry. Big brother will protect you. And besides, her target now is the King."The smile came back, small but real, like he was trying to lighten the mood for my sake.“Go to sleep. Don’t worry about all this.”He stood, gave me one last reassuring look, and walked away. The door clicked softly behind him.I sat there on the bed, staring at the closed d

  • Became His Mate By Accident    Who's Ice

ELENA Kael? What? How did he get my number? My heart did a stupid little flip, surprise mixing with a flutter I didn’t want to name. {Duh, he’s the king.} Roundy’s voice popped up, dry as ever. I rolled my eyes, cheeks warming. “Oh, oh, but why’s he texting me?” {You’re his mate. You’re getting dumber as days pass. It’s alarming.} The sarcasm stung, but it also made me huff a laugh. “Listen, Roundy, I’m like a mother to you, so respect me, okay?” {Yes, mother.} He said it dripping with sarcasm, and I could practically see him rolling his digital eyes. I snorted, shaking my head, the tension from downstairs easing just a bit. Then I opened the chat. Three messages. Simple. Direct. My chest tightened with something soft and unexpected. It felt… cute. Almost shy, coming from him. I answered the third one first, fingers hovering before typing. Yes I did just now. Hit send. Then the second. I’m recovering. Send. A pause, my pulse picking up with nervous exciteme

ELENAI walked downstairs for lunch, trying not to trip over my own nerves. The dining hall was all polished wood and fancy plates, smelling like heaven—roast meat, fresh bread, some kind of creamy soup that made my stomach do a happy flip. And there she was.Liora.My emotionless sister, sitting ramrod straight, black hair perfect, face like she’d practiced “blank” in the mirror. No smile. No wave.Just that cool, distant vibe.I kinda missed stabby sister, I thought, biting back a grin.Roundy popped up in my head, scoffing.{It’s only you who would miss someone that killed you.}“That will kill the original Elena, you mean,” I shot back silently, rolling my eyes. “It’s not happening anymore. Plot twist: I’m un-stabbable now.”Famous last words, probably.I pulled out the chair right next to her—close enough to be sisterly, far enough not to crowd. She stood up.Smooth as a cat.Moved to the complete opposite side of the table.Sat again.Eyes on her plate.I blinked. Then snorted.

  • Became His Mate By Accident    Text to Elena

KAELThe meeting with Alpha Renren was rather boring stuff. We sat in the private booth of the restaurant, security discreet at the doors, and talked numbers.Corporation deals between our companies: his pack’s tech firms partnering with my royal-backed labs for better lunar encryption software.Border resource shares.Joint patrols against the vampire push. All necessary. All dull.I nodded at the right times, signed where Liam slid the tablet toward me, but my mind wandered.Restless.The food tasted like nothing.Renren’s voice droned on, steady and confident, but every word felt distant. My chest ached with a constant, low throb—the bond pulling, reminding me she was out there.Away.Healing.Or running. When the deal was sealed with a firm handshake, relief washed over me, thin and fleeting. At least this was done.I stood, buttoned my jacket, and left the restaurant without lingering goodbyes.Liam followed, ever so cold, face blank as always, tablet tucked under his arm.We sli
