~ LENA ~

For the past few minutes, I’d been telling myself it was all in my head. Now I wasn’t so sure anymore.

The footsteps returned. They were closer this time. Much closer. They matched my pace, then quickened as the sound seemed to rush toward me, closing the distance.

My heart leapt into my throat as I whirled around. This time, someone was standing behind me.

“Oh my God, I’m sorry!”

The woman immediately apologized. Her expression filled with concern as she saw how frightened I was.

“I’

  • Becoming Mrs. Blackwood   Chapter 45

~ CAMILLE ~By the time the driver turned the car through the gates of the Devereux estate, the dull pounding behind my temples had developed into a full-blown headache.I sighed, lifting my fingers to my temple and pressing them lightly against the throbbing spot the same way I had done several times during the drive home, hoping the ache would finally ease. But it didn’t. If anything, it seemed to be getting worse.I closed my eyes for a moment and drew in a slow breath as the car rolled down the drive. When I opened them again, I was staring at the mansion. It looked magnificent as it always did. Grand. The kind of home people slowed their cars to admire. The kind of house women dreamed of living in.Once upon a time… I’d been one of those women. These days, I barely noticed it anymore. Not the lovely gardens. Or the impressive fountain standing in the center of the circular driveway with its marble Grecian statue.I’d driven past it thousands of times. But just like almost everyth

  • Becoming Mrs. Blackwood   Chapter 44

~ LENA ~All through the ride back home, I couldn’t stop thinking about Camille. Even as Vivienne filled the drive with conversation about the upcoming gala, my mind was barely with her.I believed what she said—that women like Camille were used to being the center of attention wherever they went, and my entrance had probably unsettled her.Still…I couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t adding up. It was obvious from the very second we met that she disliked me. She hadn’t even tried to hide it. Especially after the meeting ended and the women lingered in little groups chatting.I’d watched her from across the room as she spoke quietly with Margaret. When their conversation ended, she’d picked up her handbag and sunglasses from the table. As she turned to leave, our eyes met once again. This time, she paused. Just for a second. Her gaze swept over me, razor-sharp with contempt. Then, without a single word, she slipped her sunglasses into place and walked right past me like I

  • Becoming Mrs. Blackwood   Chapter 43

~ LENA ~“Oh, Margaret.”Before I could as much as say a word, Camille’s voice cut through the silence. It drifted across the table, smooth as silk, carrying just enough warmth to avoid sounding rude.Heads turned in her direction as she smiled graciously. “I’m not sure that’s entirely fair.”Margaret regarded her with silent curiosity.Camille folded her hands neatly on the table.“Kimberly has only just joined us. She’s still getting acquainted with the Circle.” She looked at me, her smile still perfectly composed. “It hardly seems right to put her on the spot before she’s had the chance to understand how we do things around here.”A few women exchanged uncertain glances.“I don’t think Margaret is putting her on the spot,” Vivienne spoke gently beside me, looking directly at Camille. “She’s only inviting Kimberly to share her thoughts. There’s no harm in hearing from someone new. Let her speak.”On the surface, Camille sounded thoughtful, protective. But beneath her carefully chose

~ LENA ~“All right, ladies, enough of the small talk. Let’s get started, shall we?”As soon as Margaret Hawthorne spoke, the atmosphere in the room changed. I looked around the table. Smiles had faded. Leather folders were opened. Tablets were lit up, pens uncapped. Everyone sat a little straighter. For the first time since I arrived, I wasn’t looking at expensive dresses or sparkling jewelry. I was looking at women ready to work.Margaret glanced in my direction with a pleased expression. “Before we get on with business, there’s someone I’d like to introduce to you all.”My heart skipped.“Kimberly Blackwood.”Every head at the table turned toward me, making the breath freeze in my lungs.Margaret smiled warmly. “Some of you already know Kimberly by reputation as Nathan Blackwood’s wife. As we all know, Mr. Blackwood has been one of the Circle’s most generous supporters over the years, and we’re delighted to welcome his wife as well.” Grinning, she turned to me. “Welcome to the fold

~ LENA ~Silence descended. It wasn’t the peaceful, comfortable kind. It was the type that made every hair on my body stand. Made me aware of the shocked stares of the women closest to us who, apparently, had heard every word Camille had spoken. Then, like ripples spreading across perfectly still water, the silence travelled. Conversations nearby faltered, laughter dwindled, more heads turned in our direction. Not because everyone had heard what Camille said, but because they’d noticed the sudden tension.“Camille!” Vivienne reacted, her smile turning into a frown. Her voice was quiet, but filled with disappointment.Camille looked at her without the slightest hint of remorse. “What?” she asked lightly. “I merely made an observation. Being honest shouldn’t be a problem. Should it?”She glanced around at the uncomfortable faces surrounding us, amusement dancing in her green eyes.“Kimberly isn’t ‘anyone’ as you put it,” Vivienne said. “In case you haven’t heard, she’s Nathan Blackwood’s

  • Becoming Mrs. Blackwood   Chapter 40

~ LENA ~Several minutes passed as I stood in the closet, staring at the rows of clothes, unable to make up my mind on what to wear.Hands on my hips, I wondered which outfit would be appropriate for the Fieldston Women’s Circle meeting. The question had been running through my head ever since I woke up this morning.I was surrounded by beautiful dresses… but somehow, I still couldn’t make a choice.I pulled out a cream-colored dress.Too formal. I abandoned it.A navy jumpsuit.Too casual. I abandoned it, too.I sighed, rubbing my forehead. Why had I agreed to this?I knew the answer. It was because Vivienne wouldn’t take no for an answer. She had called three times in the last two days alone, still trying to convince me.“Just come once,” she’d pleaded. “No commitment. If you feel like you don’t like it, you don’t want to belong, you can opt out, and I won’t pressure you again.”Eventually I’d caved. One meeting, I told myself. That was all.I would sit through it, smile politely, s

~ LENA ~On our wedding night, every inch of your body will be mine to explore...The words haunted me.They followed me into bed at night, dominating my thoughts as I lay awake beneath the sheets, unable to sleep. ~ NATHAN ~I stood in the kitchen doorway for longer than I meant to. Kim hadn’t noticed me. She was completely absorbed in what she was doing. So focused that she hadn’t heard my footsteps at all.I’d only come to check on her because curiosity wouldn’t let me sit still. I told myself it was only g

~ LENA ~The world came to a standstill. For a second, I was no longer Kimberly Hayes. No longer wrapped in silk and lies. I was just Lena Martinez again—stripped bare by those eyes, exposed, and confronted by danger.“What?” I whispered, barely hearing the sound of my own voice.Nathan didn’t respo
