LOGINAva’s POV
My mind couldn't stop racing with thoughts about my CEO’s offer to be his daughter's nanny. I loved the cute girl, but being her nanny would mean working closely with her cold father. I’d asked for two days to think over it, maybe before then, I’d make a decision. “Why are you just coming?” my stepmother’s cold voice stopped me in track as I walked in. I released a deep sigh, hoping she wasn't about to start her trouble. “Aunty, I told you yesterday I got employed at the King’s enterprise, so obviously I’m coming from work….” Before I could finish speaking, a stinging slap landed on my cheek. If a mirror had been in my front at the moment, I would have seen the red marks from her fingers. My eyes burned with anger as I glared at my wicked stepmom, who stood tall, satisfied with her action. “What have I done to deserve such a slap?” I asked, a tear rolling down my cheek. “When you learn to speak to your mother with respect, you won't be getting slapped,” my father said, his voice stern as he emerged from his room. “Dad….” I called out, disappointed at him, my hand still clutching my burning cheek. “I heard how you replied to your mother's simple question….” “She's not my mother,” I snapped, but earned another slap, this time from my father. My cheeks started to burn with pain. I opened my trembling mouth to speak, but words failed me. Since my father's remarriage to Alicia, just a week after my mom's death, I’d been treated like a maid. “She's been the one taking care of you and your late brother since your mother died.” My dad sneered. ‘Taking care’ I scoffed inwardly. A woman who was always satisfied to starve me and my late brother, Aiden. “Can I at least go…to my room,” I stammered. My dad and his wife eyed me with disdain and irritating hiss escaped their throats. I took that as an answer and strode to my room. My gaze fell on my mother's picture and my grief only intensified. I missed her so much. I gently took down the picture, clutching it to my chest as I collapsed to the ground, and sobbed silently. Suddenly, I sighted a long creature crawling towards me, making me jerk up from the floor. Its slithering movement sent chills down my spine as I leaned against the wall, my breath becoming fast with fear. Its scary pupils seemed to lock onto mine as it moved closer, and I froze, paralyzed with fear. A loud scream for help escaped my throat, but no one came to my rescue. The copperhead snake raised its head off the floor, and I screamed again, my fear intensifying. A rush of adrenaline ran through my spine, and I grabbed the door knob, but it wouldn't budge, it seemed like it had been locked from outside. I was trapped in the room with the deadly snake. Who would have done that? With no means of escape, I summoned up courage and grabbed my wooden stool and began smashing it down on the snake’s head. Sweat dripped down my body as I continued the relentless attack, my chest was heaving with fear. After what felt like eternity, the snake’s head finally severed. A wave of relief washed over me as I stared at its lifeless body on the floor. I collapsed to the floor, gasping for breath, sweat streaming down my face. Just then, my door creaked open and my dad and Alicia walked in. “Oh my goodness!” My dad exclaimed as he saw the dead snake. Alicia rushed towards me, and began inspecting my body. I could see the disappointment in her eyes when she couldn't find any mark of snake bite on me. “How did this enter?” My dad asked, his voice dripping with shock as he inspected the snake. “You should ask your daughter,” Alicia said sharply, making my eyes widened in shock. ‘Ask me’ but how? “This snake can't be found in clean, developed areas. Not even in a neat house like this. Ava, why did you bring a snake into this house?” She snapped, her eyes flashing with accusations. I couldn't believe my dad started believing her as he turned his accusatory gaze at me, expecting me to reply. My breath was still heavy, I couldn't speak, I just allowed my tears to flow. “I know your plans,” Alicia sneered. “You want to kill Rowan, just like you killed your only brother.” “Alicia, it's okay,” My father snapped. “My daughter can't do that,” he cautioned. “Then explain what a snake’s doing in a clean house like this?” She snapped back, her voice raised. I cleared my throat and slowly rose up, my teary eyes locked on Alicia. “Alicia,” I called, her eyes narrowed as I called her by name. “I called for help when I saw this snake in my room, but no one showed up. I wanted to run, but discovered my door was locked from outside. Tell me, what have I done to deserve this cruel treatment from you?” I said, my voice firm, despite the emotion brewing in me. Alicia's expression changed and she bursted into fake tears to gain my father's trust and sympathy. “Will you stand here and watch your daughter accuse me falsely,” she said to my dad before storming out of the room. “Can you see what you’ve caused,” my dad said, his jaw clenched with anger and then he strode after his wife. I felt helpless…..My dad believed his wife over me. I knew sobbing wouldn't help me, instead, I grabbed a packer and carefully placed the dead snake inside it to dispose of. I was about to reach the wastebin when I heard my stepmother's voice on a call with someone. I stopped to eavesdrop on her as I heard her mention the snake. “Stop telling me the snake is poisonous. Why didn't it bite her then? She killed the snake instead.” A cold chill ran down my spine as I heard the words from her mouth. Not wanting her to find out I’d overheard, I decided to return to my room and dispose of the snake later, but her next words almost made my soul jump out of my body. “She's a threat to my son. Almost all of her father's properties are in her name!” My hand trembled as I took in her words, the packer almost slipped from my grasp. My stepmother wanted me dead over inheritance I didn't even care about. ‘I have no other choice than to accept my CEO’s offer to be Lily's live-in nanny.’“You can go home,” Ethan's cold voice broke the silence, jolting Ava's back to the moment. Her teary eyes locked onto his stern eyes. Wasn't he going to say anything about what his mother had just said? “And….what about your mother?” Ava's voice trembled with emotion. Ethan's teeth clenched in frustration, his jaw tightening visibly. “I’ll handle that, go and take care of my daughter,” his face frowning as he said that. Ava nodded quietly and turned to leave but her feet felt rooted to the spot. She remembered she hadn't asked about Ethan's diagnosis. “What are you waiting for?” Ethan asked coldly. Ava returned slowly to him. “Your…I forget to ask how you're faring,” her voice trembled with fear. She swallowed hard and continued, ”The doctor refused to tell me your diagnosis,” Ethan's face squeezed up in a frown, and Ava's gaze dropped. “I'm fine, you don't need to know my diagnosis….”“I'm your wife!” Ava's voice rose, catching Ethan off guard. It was as if her patience and ca
“What happened to Ethan again?” Mrs. Evangeline King rushed into the hospital waiting room, her breath fast with panic. Ava stood up, confusion and nervousness swirling inside of her as she watched Mrs. Evangeline King stormed in. Though they had never met, the faint resemblance to Ethan made her suspect this was his mother. “Good….. afternoon, ma,” Ava stammered, unsure of what to say to the visibly shaking woman. Mrs. Evangeline ignored her, her focus on Miriam. “Where's my son? What are the doctors saying?” Her voice trembled with anxiety.“The doctor hadn't disclosed his diagnosis yet. He is with him in the ward, ma.” Miriam replied with her head bowed, pointing toward the private emergency ward. Without any other questions, Mrs. Evangeline rushed to the ward with her bodyguard running to keep up with her pace. Ava glanced over at Miriam, whose face etched with confusion. Perhaps Miriam was confused and shocked with the way Mrs. Evangeline ignored her daughter-in-law. Ava’s
“Jess!” Henry exclaimed, rushing back into his car. He’d thought the collision had seriously damaged Ava's taxi, but just as he was about to get to them, the taxi driver sped off. He sped after them but only to slam into a pole, bringing him to an abrupt halt. Before he could recover, Ava's taxi had vanished out of sight. Panic flooded through his blood as he circled the street, frantically searching for Ava's taxi. He drove to the King’s enterprise, but the fear of raising suspicion forced him to turn back. “What the hell do I want to tell Alicia,” he growled, pounding his fist on the steering wheel. Though he looked like the scary one, Alicia seemed more formidable and he feared her anger.Still pondering on what to do next, his phone rang, disrupting his thoughts. A glance at the screen revealed Alicia’s name, sending chills down his spine. Reluctantly, he answered the call and put the phone on speaker. “Is it done?” Alicia's voice was dangerously low. Henry's hand ran through
Ava's POV “Alright,” he whispered, sending relief coursing through my spine. I hadn't expected him to accept so quickly. That means he needed this marriage more than I thought, perhaps not just because of Lily but to ward off his parents’ troubles. “Sign,” he said coldly, dropping a paper before me. My eyes narrowed as I picked it up and lo and behold it was a marriage certificate. “That was so fast,” I muttered under my breath. I shot him a disdainful look, not when he was looking though. Then, I grabbed a pen and put down my signature. My heart fluttered as I realized I had just gotten married without a wedding gown and in an office. That wasn't what I wanted, but it was necessary for my life. “My chauffeur will take you home to pack your belongings,” Mr. Ethan said, his gaze fixed on his PC. “No, I’ll get it myself,” I said sharply, biting back my retort as anger growled inside of me for his coldness towards his newly wedded wife. “My parents don't have any idea of this marri
Ava's POV “Ava…..Ava, would you just stay inside that room and let me serve dinner?” That was Alicia's voice. I slapped my forehead in frustration and quickly hid the contract marriage terms and conditions. “Ava….” Her voice grew louder. “I'm coming!” I shouted back, clearly frustrated and quickly rushed out of the room. “Is this how you ignore your mother?” My dad yelled as I got to the dining room.“I rushed down here as I heard her voice….”“That's a lie,” Alicia snapped. “I called you more than five times.”“Five times,” I muttered, but swallowed my retort and whispered, “I’m sorry.” My dad's angry gaze lingered on me before he hissed and sat down. I hurried to the kitchen to serve the food, but Alicia had already portioned it onto plates, leaving them ready for me to carry to the dining table. However, there were only three plates on the tray. I rushed to the pot to see if she’d left some for me, but the pot was scraped clean. “1..2..3,” I recounted slowly. “Ahh!” I silent
Ava's POV “Name your price,” my CEO said, his eyes locked on me.‘A contract marriage for eighteen years,’ the more I thought about it, the more my heart ached.“Sir, If it's because of Lily, I can be her nanny not your wife!”He leaned forward, his expression unreadable. “Ava, my mother is on my neck to get married, your stepmother is maltreating you. Let's get married to be free from them.” “I…didn't tell you my stepmother is maltreating me.” My eyebrows furrowed in shock.“Oh, you didn’t need to say it directly. I understand when you told me about your late brother,” he said, his tone now calm. A contract marriage with my CEO wasn’t how I wanted to escape my stepmother's trap, but even at that, I began weighing my options inwardly. Ethan King was a cold-hearted boss, Alicia was a wicked stepmother, which of them would I be safe with?“Ava…” he called, snapping me out of my thoughts. “I need to think about this,” I said and without waiting for his response I stormed out of his
