LOGINEthan's POV
I was so relieved to finally see my 7 months old fast asleep. She was such a handful. I couldn't help but become sorrowful as I watched her tiny face. She reminded me of her mother, who had passed away while bringing her to the world. ‘I wish she’s here with me, I wouldn't have to bring Lily to the office, after her nanny suddenly resigned.’ The more I looked at Lily's tiny face, the more memories of my late wife flashed through my mind. Lily’s face, lips, smiles and eyes all looked like my Michelle. My phone's sudden ring shattered my thoughts, it vibrated loudly on the table, that I was so scared it might wake Lily. I glanced at the screen and my frustration at the caller disappeared after seeing it was my mom. “Hello mom,” I said in a low tone, moving far away from Lily’s cot. “I heard Lily caused a tantrum in your office today,” my mom said, a hint of mockery in her voice. She was always quick to know everything happening in my office, making me wonder who her informant was. “Mom, she's sleeping now. Her diaper was wet, that's why…..” “Get a wife, Ethan.” Mom interrupted me, her tone sharp. “It's been over 7 months since your wife died. I know you love her so much, but you need to find another lady to help you take care of your daughter and yourself. Aren't you tired of hiring nannies every month?” She was right; just in the past two months, Lily had six nannies. Each left with an excuse that my baby was too much to handle. But the thought of remarrying made me nervous. What if I didn't find a woman who will love my daughter like I do? I’ve heard of many stories of stepmothers treating their stepchildren poorly, I wouldn't want my daughter to experience that. “Ethan, are you there?” Mom’s voice snapped me back from my thoughts. “Yes, mom. I’ll look into it,” I said, running my hand through my hair. Mom let out a deep sigh. “You always say that, but I never hear back from you.” Her voice was laced with frustration. “Ethan, I’m arranging a date for you with Jackson's eldest daughter.” “Jackson family?” I repeated, to be sure I heard clearly. “Yes. Your marriage with her will also strengthen our business ties.” A satisfied chuckle escaped her throat. “Mom, please cancel the date. I can't marry that girl.” I said firmly. Without waiting for her response, I hung up and switched up my phone. Call me rude if you want, I was just tired of my mom trying to matchmake me with some rude billionaire's daughters. I’d never met with the daughters of the Jackson, but I’ve heard a lot about them. They were described as rude, entitled and lazy. I wouldn't want to marry such a wife. Shortly after I returned to my seat to begin work on some files, Lily’s cry filled the air. Gosh! I slammed my palm on my forehead in frustration. This girl hadn't even slept for up to an hour. Hesitantly, I picked her up from the cot and started to sing lullabies for her. When she couldn't stop crying, I grabbed her milk and began feeding her. After finishing the whole bottle, she started to cry again. ‘The new secretary,’ she crossed my mind. Just as I picked up my phone to call her office line, the door swung open and there she was. If it was to be a normal day, I’d have scolded her for barging into my office without knocking, but today, she was highly welcome. “Oh, Lily is awake,” the young, annoying woman said, walking towards me. To my surprise, Lily stopped crying, and she happily flashed her two teeth at her. “Miss…….” “Ava Blackwood,” she provided. “Have you been oriented to the workplace?” I asked, my gaze fixed on my laptop screen. “Yes, sir. I’ve started work already and I’m here to give you some files for review,” she said, gently placing the files before me, while cradling Lily. “How do you know so much about babies?” I asked, still focused on my screen. She was quiet for a moment, prompting me to glance up. Her expression had turned somber but I acted like I didn't notice, to maintain my professionalism. “You don't have an answer to my question?” I said curtly. “My mother passed away after giving birth to my younger brother when I was ten. I started taking care of him from that age, even though I had a stepmother, she had never cared for us. I lost my brother when he was six years old.” Her voice cracked with emotion and tears welled up in her eyes. I felt a pang of sympathy, and the mention of her uncaring stepmom only heightened my fear about remarrying. “I'm sorry for bringing the hurtful memories,” I said firmly. She nodded, managing a smile. “You can bring my baby and return to your duty post,” I said, but as I stretched my hand to receive Lily, she started to cry, louder than before. A low, frustrating hiss escaped my lips. Why would my daughter become so attached to a stranger? “If you don't mind, I can take her with me to my office,” Ava said with a smile. My face twisted into a frown and I slowly nodded reluctantly. Ava's smile widened and she happily turned away with my baby. ‘Lily needs a nanny,’ I remembered. “Ava, Can you be Lily’s nanny and I’ll double your salary?” My words tumbled out. She halted mid-step, and turned back slowly, and her eyes clouded over.“You can go home,” Ethan's cold voice broke the silence, jolting Ava's back to the moment. Her teary eyes locked onto his stern eyes. Wasn't he going to say anything about what his mother had just said? “And….what about your mother?” Ava's voice trembled with emotion. Ethan's teeth clenched in frustration, his jaw tightening visibly. “I’ll handle that, go and take care of my daughter,” his face frowning as he said that. Ava nodded quietly and turned to leave but her feet felt rooted to the spot. She remembered she hadn't asked about Ethan's diagnosis. “What are you waiting for?” Ethan asked coldly. Ava returned slowly to him. “Your…I forget to ask how you're faring,” her voice trembled with fear. She swallowed hard and continued, ”The doctor refused to tell me your diagnosis,” Ethan's face squeezed up in a frown, and Ava's gaze dropped. “I'm fine, you don't need to know my diagnosis….”“I'm your wife!” Ava's voice rose, catching Ethan off guard. It was as if her patience and ca
“What happened to Ethan again?” Mrs. Evangeline King rushed into the hospital waiting room, her breath fast with panic. Ava stood up, confusion and nervousness swirling inside of her as she watched Mrs. Evangeline King stormed in. Though they had never met, the faint resemblance to Ethan made her suspect this was his mother. “Good….. afternoon, ma,” Ava stammered, unsure of what to say to the visibly shaking woman. Mrs. Evangeline ignored her, her focus on Miriam. “Where's my son? What are the doctors saying?” Her voice trembled with anxiety.“The doctor hadn't disclosed his diagnosis yet. He is with him in the ward, ma.” Miriam replied with her head bowed, pointing toward the private emergency ward. Without any other questions, Mrs. Evangeline rushed to the ward with her bodyguard running to keep up with her pace. Ava glanced over at Miriam, whose face etched with confusion. Perhaps Miriam was confused and shocked with the way Mrs. Evangeline ignored her daughter-in-law. Ava’s
“Jess!” Henry exclaimed, rushing back into his car. He’d thought the collision had seriously damaged Ava's taxi, but just as he was about to get to them, the taxi driver sped off. He sped after them but only to slam into a pole, bringing him to an abrupt halt. Before he could recover, Ava's taxi had vanished out of sight. Panic flooded through his blood as he circled the street, frantically searching for Ava's taxi. He drove to the King’s enterprise, but the fear of raising suspicion forced him to turn back. “What the hell do I want to tell Alicia,” he growled, pounding his fist on the steering wheel. Though he looked like the scary one, Alicia seemed more formidable and he feared her anger.Still pondering on what to do next, his phone rang, disrupting his thoughts. A glance at the screen revealed Alicia’s name, sending chills down his spine. Reluctantly, he answered the call and put the phone on speaker. “Is it done?” Alicia's voice was dangerously low. Henry's hand ran through
Ava's POV “Alright,” he whispered, sending relief coursing through my spine. I hadn't expected him to accept so quickly. That means he needed this marriage more than I thought, perhaps not just because of Lily but to ward off his parents’ troubles. “Sign,” he said coldly, dropping a paper before me. My eyes narrowed as I picked it up and lo and behold it was a marriage certificate. “That was so fast,” I muttered under my breath. I shot him a disdainful look, not when he was looking though. Then, I grabbed a pen and put down my signature. My heart fluttered as I realized I had just gotten married without a wedding gown and in an office. That wasn't what I wanted, but it was necessary for my life. “My chauffeur will take you home to pack your belongings,” Mr. Ethan said, his gaze fixed on his PC. “No, I’ll get it myself,” I said sharply, biting back my retort as anger growled inside of me for his coldness towards his newly wedded wife. “My parents don't have any idea of this marri
Ava's POV “Ava…..Ava, would you just stay inside that room and let me serve dinner?” That was Alicia's voice. I slapped my forehead in frustration and quickly hid the contract marriage terms and conditions. “Ava….” Her voice grew louder. “I'm coming!” I shouted back, clearly frustrated and quickly rushed out of the room. “Is this how you ignore your mother?” My dad yelled as I got to the dining room.“I rushed down here as I heard her voice….”“That's a lie,” Alicia snapped. “I called you more than five times.”“Five times,” I muttered, but swallowed my retort and whispered, “I’m sorry.” My dad's angry gaze lingered on me before he hissed and sat down. I hurried to the kitchen to serve the food, but Alicia had already portioned it onto plates, leaving them ready for me to carry to the dining table. However, there were only three plates on the tray. I rushed to the pot to see if she’d left some for me, but the pot was scraped clean. “1..2..3,” I recounted slowly. “Ahh!” I silent
Ava's POV “Name your price,” my CEO said, his eyes locked on me.‘A contract marriage for eighteen years,’ the more I thought about it, the more my heart ached.“Sir, If it's because of Lily, I can be her nanny not your wife!”He leaned forward, his expression unreadable. “Ava, my mother is on my neck to get married, your stepmother is maltreating you. Let's get married to be free from them.” “I…didn't tell you my stepmother is maltreating me.” My eyebrows furrowed in shock.“Oh, you didn’t need to say it directly. I understand when you told me about your late brother,” he said, his tone now calm. A contract marriage with my CEO wasn’t how I wanted to escape my stepmother's trap, but even at that, I began weighing my options inwardly. Ethan King was a cold-hearted boss, Alicia was a wicked stepmother, which of them would I be safe with?“Ava…” he called, snapping me out of my thoughts. “I need to think about this,” I said and without waiting for his response I stormed out of his
