Chapter 2

作者: A Little Cutie
On New Year’s Eve, I humbled myself and called everyone I could think of, begging to get a loan. However, every call ended with them either rejecting the call outright or scolding me for bringing bad luck during the holiday. Amid the endless sound of the fireworks, my grandma closed her eyes, and just like that, I was the only one left.

At the thought of her pale face, my heart felt like it was being sliced apart. My eyes reddened instantly.

I didn’t take the box of caviar he had brought. Instead, I said, “Hudson, we–”

I wanted to call for a break-up, but before those words could leave my mouth, Hudson cut me off.

“Alright, enough. You spent the New Year with your grandma. You probably don’t have much money left, don’t you?”

With a flick of his finger, he transferred me two hundred dollars.

“Take this as the money I spent buying caviar for your grandma. No need to write an IOU.”

Thinking about it, I found it rather amusing. He was afraid I was a gold digger, so he made me hand over my salary to him. If I needed spending money, I had to wait for his approval, and every time he transferred money to me, he would make me write an IOU. After seven years of dating, I somehow ended up deeply in debt to Hudson.

Back then, I simply thought that his sensitivity to money was because his family ran a company. So, I indulged him and agreed to all his requests. However, his frugality was only ever directed at me. When it came to Lara, he could spend lavishly, buying her diamond necklaces worth a fortune or even purchasing villas for her. Every gesture made headlines. Well, as they said, where the money went was where the love was.

Snapping back to reality, I immediately transferred the two hundred dollars back to him and said, “No need. I don’t want it.”

Only then did Hudson finally look at me seriously. As if realizing something, he sighed helplessly.

“Is that too little? Fine. I’ll agree to have a wedding with you, alright? That’ll make your vain grandma proud, too, wouldn’t it? Honestly, you’re all the same…”

His words pierced my ears. Yet, I had endured it for seven years. All I had ever wanted was a normal relationship—exchanging gifts and going shopping together like any other couple. However, he always accused me of being vain and comparing myself to others. He claimed I was after his family’s money.

“There’s no need for a wedding. We’re not real husband and wife anyway.”

Hudson’s handsome face darkened, revealing the familiar expression of irritation I knew all too well. Just then, someone knocked on the door. He shot me an annoyed glance before turning to open it.

The next second, his voice suddenly rose in surprise. “What are you doing here?”

I turned my head. Standing at the doorway was Lara, wearing a matching couple’s down jacket, the same style as Hudson’s.

She lightly punched his chest and laughed brightly. “My prince, my girlfriends are visiting today. They’d like to see what my husband looks like. Come spend another day with me.”

Then, she looked past Hudson at me, blinking her large innocent eyes in open provocation.

“Sophie, you won’t be angry about it, will you? You weren’t angry the other day either. Hudson and I are just best friends. You know that.”

As she spoke, she deliberately shivered, as if to complain it was cold, and intertwined her fingers with Hudson’s. The pair of matching wedding rings on their hands was impossible to miss.

Hudson looked at her with affection and, with practiced ease, slipped her hand into his pocket to warm it.

“What would she be angry about? Don’t worry. I’ll make sure you look good in front of your girlfriends.”

As he spoke, Hudson grabbed his car keys and turned to leave. After taking two steps, he seemed to remember me. He released Lara’s hand, walked over, cupped my face, and kissed the corner of my lips.

“Don’t worry. This will be the last time. After this, I’ll spend every day with you.”

Unfortunately, for Hudson, there would be no “after this” for us anymore.

I wiped my lips hard, watching as the two of them laughed and walked away together. Then, I turned around and picked up the resignation letter that had been prepared on the table.

As it was a week since the New Year, my coworkers had returned to work. When I arrived late, they all covered their mouths and laughed knowingly.

“How dare Sophie show herself at the company? She must be crazy for money. She caused a scene on the day Mr. Hudson got married. She even begged him for money. She has no shame at all!”

Graham’s dark eyes were hard to read. In a calm, even tone, he issued a threat, “Hudson, do you really think it’s that easy to bring me down? If you don’t want the company anymore, stay here. I’ll find someone else to run it.”At his words, Lara panicked. She grabbed Hudson’s sleeve, pleading, “Hudson, look at how long this has gone on. It’s time to go back. Sophie isn’t worth all this!”Hudson hesitated, his eyes flicking toward me, but he straightened his back and said firmly, “If you won’t give it to me, then I don’t want the family inheritance. I just want to be with Soph! Soph isn’t like my mother. She won’t look down on me, whether I’m rich or poor!”That sentence hit a nerve in Graham’s heart. Years ago, he had misjudged someone, a gold-digger he like, only to be betrayed. She had cheated on him and even poisoned him and his son, nearly committing a double murder. For the first time, I saw the usually composed and elegant Graham show a ferocious expression. He sneered. “Fi

“Soph, I’ve divorced Lara. The news just hasn’t come out yet. Don’t avoid me.”His head pounded from the emotional ups and downs, and he closed his eyes tightly. However, his hands still gripped mine like he was afraid I’d run away.I couldn’t help but laugh and asked, “Hudson, is marriage all a joke to you?”Then, I gently placed his hands under the blanket.Seeing his panicked expression, I added, “I’ll get the doctor.”Only then did he relax, looking at me with a pitiful, puppy-like gaze. However, I didn’t go to the doctor. After leaving the ward, I immediately contacted Lara. The moment she picked up, her voice was sharp. “Sophie, are you calling just to show off? Don’t think that just because Hudson’s intrigued by your little games, you can be his wife. Dream on!”How ironic. Did she really think everyone was going after the position of his wife like she was?I calmly said, “Hudson got into an accident. Come and get him.”Only then did I fetch the doctor. The doctor repo

His resistance had been utterly powerless in front of Graham, and I knew I would never see Hudson again.Turning away, I passed through the gate and boarded the plane bound overseas. Inside my suitcase, I carried my grandma’s ashes. Looking at the city where I had lived for over thirty years, I waved goodbye.Gently touching the suitcase, I thought I could hear my grandma’s voice saying, “Wherever my granddaughter is, that’s where I’ll be.”After landing, the new company’s HR manager greeted me warmly and arranged a prime plot for my grandma’s burial. The female CEO, Ada Simmons, went even further by offering me a seven-figure annual salary. She had built her success step by step, earning a stellar reputation in the industry. She looked at me and smiled knowingly. “Sophie, when I saw you at that event three years ago, I knew you’d join my team one day.”I nodded and threw myself completely into my work.It was half a year later before I saw Hudson again. He walked out of the conf

[I’m coming for you right now! Stay where you are. Don’t move. Just wait for me!]I felt a mix of confusion and irritation. Without thinking too much, I tapped out a message. [Hudson, we’re over.]Then, I blocked him.At the airport, I waited a little longer before the boarding announcement echoed through the terminal. The plane was crowded, and I dragged my suitcase along, standing in line behind everyone.Just as I was about to pass through the gate, a sudden gasp came from behind. Instinctively, I turned toward where everyone’s eyes were fixed. Then, a tall figure lifted me off my feet.Hudson held me tight. My shoulder blades ached from the strength of his grip. He was breathing heavily, clearly in a rush. When he looked at me, he was smiling broadly.“Soph, let’s run away together!”His face was flushed from running, and his suit was creased. Despite the winter chill, he radiated energy, his features still sharp and handsome. Yet, for some reason, now that he was holding

His chest heaved as he waited for them to move on. Then, finally, he called out to me. “Hey, young lady, come over here. It won’t take more than a few minutes.”Since my resignation had been finalized, and I didn’t feel like defying him, I followed him into the conference room. Hudson and Lara came in behind me.Hudson’s face lit up with anticipation. “Dad, are you… Uh–”However, before he could finish, Graham kicked him squarely in the knee. Hudson collapsed to the floor immediately. I heard a sharp thud. Hudson clutched his knee, his face drained of color, cold sweat pouring down, but he didn’t dare utter a word of protest.Graham, meanwhile, berated him, “Hudson, have you gone mad? Not long ago, you cried and begged me, threatening to take your own life, just so that Lara would return to marry you! Now that she’s married to you, as you wished, you’re involved with someone else? You’re playing both sides!”He shoved Hudson slightly and continued, “Apologize to Lara and promise n

At those words, everyone in the room went even paler. After all, in their minds, I had always been the shameless woman clinging to Hudson, a relentless nuisance.I let out a sarcastic laugh. “Mr. Hudson, quit joking. The one you registered your marriage with is Ms. Lara. How do you expect her to feel with you saying that?”Lara’s face looked awful by then, and strangely, I felt a rush of satisfaction. Before this, it had always been me watching Lara flaunt herself in front of me, filling me with indignation. Now, finally, she was tasting a bit of that same humiliation.Hudson’s expression also soured, but he forced a smile. “Sophie, even if you leave me, where will you go? You’re over thirty years old. What company would hire you? Or… have you found another man?”I glanced at the office clock. With all that commotion, it was already eleven. If this argument dragged on, I’d miss my flight. So, I laid down my final ultimatum.“Mr. Hudson, I originally wanted a clean break, but if yo
