Chapter 3: Elena’s POV

With only four days left until the divorce, I was back at the house, searching every room for the project files my mother had left behind.

I pulled open the drawers in the study, flipped through stacks of old folders, and checked the back of every shelf. Nothing. She had dedicated years of her life to that music project before her death, and I knew Damian had locked the documents away somewhere in this house.

Just as I shut the bottom drawer of the desk, heavy footsteps echoed behind me.

"Looking for these?"

I turned around to see Damian standing in the doorway, his suit jacket unbuttoned. Chloe was wrapped around his arm, leaning her head against his shoulder with a triumphant smile on her face. Damian was holding a thick black folder in his hand—my mother's project files.

"Give those to me, Damian," I said, stepping forward. "You have no right to keep her work."

Damian casually slid the folder into his inner coat pocket and pulled Chloe closer. "Stop searching. There's something far more important you need to do first."

Chloe giggled, stepping out from his arm and pointing at the professional camera setup sitting on the table near the window. "Take some couple photos of us, Elena. You used to love photography, didn't you? Though I wonder if you can even manage it now with your hands shaking like that—haha?"

I held my ground, looking past Chloe straight into Damian's eyes. "My photography skills aren't meant for the likes of you."

Chloe’s face darkened, her polite front slipping for a second. "You're a cripple. I'm giving you an opportunity here—don't be ungrateful."

"I said no," I replied coldly, crossing my arms. "I don't take photos for people like you."

Damian let out a harsh laugh, pulling a stack of cash from his wallet and tossing it onto the desk beside me. "Since you just want money, I'll pay you once the shoot is done. Pick up the camera, Elena."

I didn't even glance at the cash. "I do have a condition, but it isn't your money. Return my mother's project files. You give me the folder, and I'll shoot your photos."

Damian stared at me for a long moment before giving a cold nod. "Fine. Finish the shoot, and you get the folder."

Ten minutes later, we were in the home studio room. Damian and Chloe struck various intimate poses on the leather sofa—Chloe wrapping her arms around his neck, Damian kissing her cheek, and Chloe resting her head in his lap. Throughout the entire session, they didn't stop talking.

"Look how much better I look next to you than she ever did," Chloe purred, adjusting her low-cut dress in front of the lens. "My waist is so much smaller, and my skin is flawless. Elena always looked so plain."

Damian chuckled, his hands resting on Chloe's hips. "You don't need to compare yourself to her, Chloe. You're better than her in every way."

I kept my mouth shut, silently pressing the shutter button repeatedly. Their comments were utterly disgusting, but I forced myself to endure it just to finish the shoot as quickly as possible.

"We're done," I announced, stepping back from the tripod. "Come over and select the photos so I can get my mother's files."

Damian and Chloe walked over to the setup monitor. I plugged the memory card in, and a high-resolution shot of them kissing on the sofa displayed prominently on the large screen right in front of us.

Damian looked at the screen, then turned his gaze toward me with a smug, arrogant expression. "You know, Elena... if you beg me properly right now, I might consider taking a set of couple photos with you, too."

I gave him an unimpressed look and paid him no mind, completely ignoring his offer as I reached out to export the image files to the drive.

Just as I leaned over the desk, a loud, creaking noise came from directly behind me.

I turned around quickly. A massive stack of heavy lighting equipment cases—which should have been securely piled against the wall—was tipping forward, falling straight toward my head.

Panic seized my chest. As I instinctively threw my arms up to protect myself, I caught a brief glimpse of Chloe standing near the base of the rack, a cold, vicious smile on her face.

Before I could dodge, the heaviest steel case slammed directly into me. Pain exploded across my body, everything went pitch black, and I fainted.

Chapter 13: Elena’s POVThe white flash of the camera hit my eyes, burning a bright, ugly spot into my vision."Did you dump Damian the second Carter offered you a corporate line?" The reporter pushed the microphone closer, almost knocking over my water glass. "Are you using Whitmore Legacy Holdings as a cover for a private corporate payout?"My heart was beating wildly against my ribs, but I didn't hide my face. I didn't cringe, and I didn't scream. I sat bolt upright in the leather booth, fixing the reporter with a cold, unblinking glare. Years of keeping my mouth shut around Damian’s high-society friends had taught me one hard rule: the second you panic on camera, they win.Carter was already on his feet. He stepped between the lens and my face, his massive frame blocking the light entirely. He didn't touch the reporter, but his presence was so dark and imposing that the photographer involuntarily took a step back."Put the camera down," Carter said. His voice wasn't raised, b

Chapter 12: Elena’s POVThe rain had stopped by the time we left the radio station, leaving the city streets wet and slick under the streetlights.I sat in the passenger seat of Carter’s car, staring down at my hands. My knuckles were pale from gripping my tablet. My throat was dry, and my shoulders ached from the sheer stress of the live interview.I had stopped Chloe from airing her lies on the radio, but as I looked at my phone, the screen was already flashing with news alerts. Entertainment blogs were clipping the audio, turning Chloe’s panicked breakdown into a viral soundbite.Damian wasn't going to take that hit quietly. I knew him too well after seven years. When he couldn't win on facts, he destroyed the person standing in his way."You're quiet," Carter said, keeping his eyes on the road."I'm waiting for him to hit back," I said, looking out the side window. "Damian won't fight the copyright claim in court yet. He knows he'll lose. He's going to make this dirty."Car

Chapter 11: Elena’s POVThe black sedan cut through the heavy city traffic, the neon signs of the downtown district blurring against the rain-slicked side windows.I sat in the passenger seat, my knees pressed together, staring down at my hands. My knuckles were pale from how tightly I was gripping my tablet. My mind was racing through every line of my mother’s original session logs, every master timestamp, every legal filing. My chest felt so tight I could barely draw a deep breath. For seven years, every time I spoke up against Damian, he flipped the script. He was a master at turning my valid anger into hysterical drama, making me feel like I was crazy for defending my own work. Doing it in private was terrifying enough. Doing it live on the air to half a million listeners made my stomach churn.Carter kept both hands on the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. He didn't turn on the radio, and he didn't offer unsolicited advice. He just drove fast and clean."You

Chapter 10: Elena’s POVI ended the call with Damian, pulled the phone away from my ear, and threw it onto the sofa.My heart was hammering against my ribs—not out of fear, but from the sudden, sharp rush of adrenaline. For seven years, Damian had made me feel small, invisible, and completely reliant on his permission to even breathe in the music industry. Seeing him lose his mind on live television while the entire press room stared at that bright red injunction banner felt like the first real breath of fresh air I had taken in nearly a decade."That was a quick call," Carter said, stepping over from the doorway. He looked at the phone on the couch, then back up at my face. "He sounded furious from across the room.""He was," I said, leaning back against the wooden desk. "He couldn't even form proper sentences. He just demanded to know what I put on the screen.""He thought you were going to pack your bags and beg him for mercy after five days," Carter said plainly. "You cut his

Chapter 9: Elena’s POVI stared at the unknown number on my phone screen, reading the text three times.Carter's company has been quietly buying up debt linked to your mother's old studio... He married you because he's coming for the rest of her catalogue. My stomach tightened, but I didn't let my mind spin into a panic. Seven years with Damian had taught me one thing: whenever he was about to lose control, he tried to make me doubt everything around me. This text didn't come from a concerned insider. It came straight from Damian or one of his lackeys, sent specifically to make me hesitate right before Chloe launched her theft.Instead of hiding in my room with the doubt, I grabbed my laptop, pulled up the master files, and walked straight out into the hallway. If this contract marriage was going to work, I needed facts, not secrets.I walked down to the main floor study where I knew Carter was still working. The door was half-open, warm light spilling into the hallway. I knocke

I knew every piano key, every vocal arrangement, and every change in tempo because I had spent my teenage years sitting on the floor of her studio listening to her play it.Now, Chloe’s name was listed on the registration database as the sole composer."Is that track from the files you retrieved?" Carter asked, his voice cutting through the heavy silence of the room."Yes," I said, my voice tight. "She took the main melody demo. Damian must have handed it to her from the office server before I packed my things.""I can have my corporate legal team file an emergency injunction within the hour," Carter said directly.
