Chapter 4

مؤلف: Wishing Heart
The moment I walked through the door, I found Donald and Jolene tangled together on the couch. Neither showed the slightest embarrassment at being caught.

I did not spare them a glance. I simply walked past.

Jolene came into the room while I packed my bags. She wore a lace nightgown that barely covered her, and telltale marks covered her exposed skin.

"Begonia, my husband slept with you for free all those days, but I only got to sleep with Donny twice. I still came out behind."

I ignored her and kept my head down as I folded my clothes.

My refusal to acknowledge her only irritated her further.

She stormed over, snatched away the clothes I had crocheted by hand for my first child, and stomped on them. "He's dead. What's the point of keeping these?

"You probably don't even know what happened. While you were being pampered during your recovery period, with Donny taking care of you, I told him I'd dreamed that baby came to claim my life. Guess what he did?"

I froze.

A smug, vicious smile spread across Jolene's face. "He didn't say a word. He just found a priest and had your child's ashes sealed away next to the garbage dump..."

A roar exploded in my head. I lost all reason and lunged at Jolene.

I tore and clawed at her, then clamped both hands around her throat like a vengeful ghost out to claim her life.

Donald rushed in and tore me away from her before backhanding me across the face.

My ears rang instantly.

He slapped the divorce papers down on the table. His signature was already at the bottom. "Begonia, you'd better think this through carefully. If you divorce me, do you really think Levi will marry you?"

I let out a cold laugh. Without so much as looking at him, I signed my name.

Donald's expression darkened.

Just then, Harold woke up hungry.

Donald looked at me coldly. "Custody of Harry goes to me. Since you're leaving anyway, you might as well nurse him one last time."

I stared at him in disbelief. I had never nursed Harold, not even once. He had always been fed formula.

I remembered how a nurse had once made an offhand remark about it. "That's cold. Pumping and dumping the milk instead of feeding her own baby."

Donald had fired her on the spot.

Afterward, he comforted me. "Nia, it's fine. I know you're afraid of the pain. Formula is just as nutritious as breast milk..."

Now he carried Harold straight over to me and treated me like nothing more than a dairy cow.

"I won't feed him." I grabbed my packed suitcase and turned to leave, but Donald seized my wrist.

His voice turned icy. "You'll feed him whether you want to or not."

He set Harold on the bed and pinned both my hands behind my back.

The fabric across my chest tore apart.

I fought with everything I had and screamed, "Donald! You bastard! Let go of me!"

Levi heard the commotion and came running. He and Jolene stood in the doorway and watched.

But Donald showed no sign of stopping. The moment Harold latched on hungrily, the last shreds of my dignity crumbled.

"Why... Why are you doing this to me?!"

Donald leaned close to my ear. "Nia, look. Harry's so happy. Could you really bear for him to never see his mother again?"

It hurt. It hurt so much.

I closed my eyes in despair as tears seeped from beneath my lashes.

I did not know how much time had passed before Donald finally released my hands. "Nia, think it over carefully. Can you really give up both the baby and me?"

With that, he picked up a full and contented Harold and left.

Jolene and Levi left as well, satisfied now that the show was over.

I lay slumped on the bed like a broken doll. My tears had long since run dry.

He had asked if I could bear it.

How could I not? I no longer wanted him. I did not want the child either.

I changed into fresh clothes and set a report beside the divorce papers. Then I took my suitcase and left that place of heartbreak behind, my heart as cold as the dead of winter.

-

Donald returned to the room later. He had expected to find Begonia waiting there, ready to apologize to him. Instead, he found an empty room and a missing suitcase.

The truth was unmistakable.

Begonia Hudson was gone. She had actually gone through with the divorce. She had actually left him.

Donald flew into a rage and began smashing everything within reach. Then his gaze suddenly landed on the report beside the divorce papers.

His face turned deathly pale. His hands trembled as he snatched up the thin document. It was a paternity test.

Donald froze as I stared him down without blinking. "Donald, this is nothing but pain of the flesh. What I went through... It was like having my heart stabbed straight through. Like having a piece of flesh carved out of me without mercy. Like being hacked into mincemeat, ground beneath someone's heel, and left for stray dogs to devour."My whole body shook, and my voice rose higher with every word.As I sobbed out my accusations, Donald completely fell apart. The regret in his eyes was so deep that nothing could ever wash it away."You destroyed me! I want your lives to rot from the inside out. I want you completely ruined."I raised a hand to wipe the tears from the corners of my eyes, then drew a deep breath. It was time to finish this once and for all.I pointed to the hidden camera on my chest. "Do you see this? Everything that just happened was streamed live through this camera."Donald shot to his feet and stared at me in disbelief. After a long moment, he forced a single

Back then, Jolene had treated the whole thing as nothing more than after-dinner gossip and spread it everywhere.I hid at home, too afraid to even step outside my bedroom. And him? All it took was a few tears from Jolene and a flimsy excuse that she'd "said it without thinking," and he forgave her. He even took her out to clear her head because he couldn't stand to see her so upset. It took me six full months before I dared to go outside again.Donald's eyes darkened, and once again, he uttered the same "sorry" I had grown sick of hearing."Whatever happens, I hope you won't do anything foolish. I'll take care of everything." With that, he turned and walked away with a look of grim resolve.…Less than three hours later, he told me everything had been taken care of.He brought me back to our old house.Jolene and Levi sat at the top of the second-floor staircase, bound hand and foot to chairs."Everything started here. Let's end it here too."Donald dumped a basin of cold wa

Jolene's eyes widened. She let out a strangled scream. "Donald, have you lost your mind? You'd destroy my happiness for that outsider, Begonia? I'm your sister!"Donald let out a cold laugh. "Did you think about being my sister when you crawled into my bed?"This was all your doing. You ruined my life with Begonia. If it weren't for you, we'd be happy together right now, raising our own child. Do you have any idea how happy we could have been?"Jolene sneered, her face twisting with contempt, "Crawled into your bed? Both times, who came looking for whom? Huh?"Donald, do you actually think forcing Levi to divorce me will win Begonia back? Keep dreaming. She hates you. She'll never forgive you for as long as she lives."The veins in Donald's neck bulged, and his chest heaved. "Shut up!"He turned to Levi. "Make a decision. Do you want this hen that can't lay eggs, or your precious son?"Just then, the butler hurried in. "Sir. Ma'am. There's trouble. The police are here. They said

Donald woke up alone in the hospital. No one was beside him.Ignoring the doctors who tried to stop him, he checked himself out with his head still wrapped in bandages. He stumbled to the garbage dump where his first child had been buried. He had never returned after the burial. He owed that child far too much. But when he arrived, the sight before him nearly tore his soul from his body. The charm meant to seal the spirit had been torn to shreds. The small burial mound had been dug wide open.Several workers at the dump were chatting nearby."A couple of days ago, some woman was digging here in the pouring rain. I thought she'd buried treasure here or something. Turns out she dug up a box of ashes. Scared me half to death.""She held those ashes and cried her lungs out. Poor thing. What kind of monster buries someone's kid in a place like this?"Realization struck Donald at once. It was Begonia. His heart lurched."I saw that charm on the ground. Don't tell me some vengeful

This was the paternity test between him and Harold. Donald's eyes locked on the final line and refused to move."The subjects Donald Inksworth and Harold Inksworth are excluded from having a biological parent-child relationship."The world went horribly quiet in an instant. All he could hear was his own ragged breathing and the dull ache of his heart crushed in an invisible fist.Harold was not his son. Begonia had betrayed him.Fury blazed in his chest. "How dare she?"Donald tore apart the paternity test that had just slapped him across the face and scattered the pieces across the floor. "That bitch! That slut!"Then he suddenly noticed writing on the back of the report. He lunged forward, gathered the scattered scraps, and pieced them back together. Two blocks of text emerged. The first had been written the day after Begonia gave birth.[Donny, I don't know if I'll ever have the courage to show you this report. Harry isn't actually our child. Our child was already gone. Duri
