The fire had nearly burned out.

Only a few glowing embers remained, casting weak orange light across the clearing.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

I sat where I had awakened, breathing unevenly, trying to convince myself that what I had seen wasn't real.

The ruins.

The woman.

The circle.

The voice.

Most of all, the feeling that someone—or something—had been watching us.

Kael remained crouched nearby.

His eyes never left me.

Watching.

Assessing.

As if he were making sure I was truly awake.

Finally, I broke the silence.

"What was that?"

My voice sounded smaller than I intended.

Kael looked away briefly.

That alone frightened me.

Because Kael always seemed to have answers.

Or at least the confidence to pretend he did.

Now he looked uncertain.

And uncertainty looked wrong on him.

"I don't know," he admitted.

I stared at him.

"That's not good enough."

His jaw tightened.

"It is the truth."

The honesty irritated me more than a lie would have.

I pushed myself to my feet.

The moment I stood, dizziness struck.

The forest tilted.

I stumbled.

Kael moved instantly.

His hand closed around my arm before I hit the ground.

The contact sent a shock through me.

Not pain.

Something worse.

Awareness.

The bond surged violently.

Heat rushed through my veins.

For one impossible second, I felt everything.

His tension.

His focus.

His determination.

His fear.

My breath caught.

Kael released me immediately.

As though he had felt it too.

The connection vanished.

But not completely.

The echo remained.

Lingering.

Dangerous.

"What was that?" I whispered.

His eyes darkened.

"The bond."

"No."

I shook my head.

"It felt different."

Kael remained silent.

That silence confirmed it.

He had felt it too.

And he didn't want to talk about it.

My frustration exploded.

"You keep saying 'bond' like that explains everything!"

The forest seemed to absorb my voice.

Kael stood slowly.

For a moment, he looked less like an Alpha and more like a man carrying something too heavy to speak aloud.

"What exactly are you hiding from me?"

His gaze locked onto mine.

Nothing moved.

Not the wind.

Not the trees.

Not even the fire.

Then he spoke.

"There are stories."

I frowned.

"What kind of stories?"

"Old ones."

Not helpful.

I crossed my arms.

"Try again."

Something almost resembling amusement flickered across his face.

It vanished instantly.

But I saw it.

And somehow that made him seem more dangerous.

Because it reminded me there was a person beneath all that control.

"There are legends older than the packs," he said.

"Older than Alpha bloodlines."

I listened despite myself.

"The first wolves believed power could be bound."

My stomach tightened.

"Bound how?"

"Through blood."

Of course.

Everything always came back to blood.

Kael continued.

"Certain bloodlines were chosen to carry specific gifts."

"Gifts?"

His expression hardened.

"That was what they called them."

I didn't like the sound of that.

"What were they really?"

"A curse."

The word settled heavily between us.

I thought about the woman in the vision.

The screaming.

The broken seal.

The shadow's warning.

The bond was never meant to be complete.

"What does that have to do with me?" I asked quietly.

Kael looked at the mark on my arm.

Then back to my face.

"I think your bloodline carried one of those gifts."

The mark immediately pulsed.

As if reacting to being discussed.

I looked down.

The dark lines glowed faintly beneath my skin.

"You think?"

"I don't know enough to be certain."

That honesty again.

It was becoming infuriating.

I looked away.

The forest suddenly felt smaller.

Like invisible walls were closing around us.

"If that's true," I said quietly, "then why was I treated like nothing?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

The pause stretched.

Then—

"Because no one knew."

I laughed bitterly.

"You don't know that."

His gaze sharpened.

"Yes. I do."

Something in his voice made me stop.

He wasn't guessing.

He believed it.

"How?"

Kael's expression darkened.

"Because if they knew what you were..."

He didn't finish.

My stomach dropped.

"What?"

His eyes held mine.

"They would never have let you live unguarded."

The words struck harder than any insult I'd ever received.

Not because they were cruel.

Because they sounded true.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

I wrapped my arms around myself.

Suddenly cold.

"What am I supposed to do with that information?"

Kael looked toward the trees.

Listening.

Always listening.

Then he said quietly:

"Survive."

I hated that answer.

Because it was realistic.

Because it was probably right.

A rustling sound echoed somewhere beyond the clearing.

Kael's entire posture changed instantly.

Alpha.

Warrior.

Predator.

The vulnerable conversation disappeared.

Replaced by sharp focus.

I felt the shift immediately.

"What is it?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he moved in front of me.

Protective.

Again.

The motion happened so naturally that I realized he wasn't even thinking about it anymore.

My chest tightened.

The forest fell silent.

Then—

A howl.

Far away.

But unmistakable.

Not a rogue.

Pack a wolf.

My stomach dropped.

Kael's expression hardened.

"They found us."

"Who?"

"Blackridge."

Relief flooded me.

Then confusion.

"That's good, isn't it?"

Kael didn't look relieved.

Not even slightly.

Which immediately killed my own relief.

"What aren't you telling me now?"

His eyes remained fixed on the darkness.

"The fewer people who know about the bond, the safer you are."

My pulse quickened.

"Those are your wolves."

"Yes."

"Your pack."

"Yes."

I stared at him.

"And you're worried about them finding us?"

A long silence.

Then:

"I'm worried about who might be following them."

That answer chilled me.

The howl came again.

Closer this time.

Voices followed.

Several.

Moving through the trees.

Searching.

Kael stepped forward.

I grabbed his arm before I could stop myself.

The contact sent another pulse through the bond.

Not as strong as before.

But enough.

He froze.

So did I.

For one brief moment neither of us moved.

Neither of us looked away.

Then I released him.

My heart hammered against my ribs.

Kael's expression became unreadable again.

The mask is returning.

But not fast enough.

I had seen something there.

Something human.

Something tired.

"What happens if they find us?" I asked quietly.

His answer came immediately.

"Everything changes."

The voices grew louder.

Branches snapped.

Footsteps approached.

My stomach twisted.

Kael looked toward the approaching sound.

Then back at me.

For the first time since we met, uncertainty existed in his eyes.

Not fear.

Not weakness.

The uncertainty of someone standing before a future they could no longer control.

The bond pulsed.

Slow.

Steady.

Alive.

And somewhere deep inside me, I realized the truth.

The dream had changed everything.

The mark wasn't growing anymore.

It was awakening.

And whatever came next—

Neither of us was ready for it.

The second bloodline had awakened.I stared at the black symbol spreading across my mark.It looked nothing like the golden pattern that had been there before. The golden lines represented the bond. The black symbol looked like a crack running through it.And somehow, I knew it was not supposed to be there.“What does that mean?” I whispered. No one answered. The statues surrounding the chamber continued moving.Stone scraped against stone as they stepped down from their ancient pedestals. There had to be hundreds of them. Some looked like warriors.Others carried bows and spears.A few had wings carved into their backs.Their empty eyes now burned with faint golden light.Darius slowly raised his sword.“I don't know about everyone else, but I'm starting to miss the hunters.”Kael gave him a look.“Don't.”“I was only saying.”“Save your breath.”Kael turned toward me.“Can you control the mark?”I looked down at my arm.The black symbol pulsed.“I don't know.”“Try.”I closed my eye

We're both coming back.”Kael's eyes softened.“You don't know that.”“Neither does the voice.”For a moment, neither of us spoke. Then Darius cleared his throat.“I'm not trying to ruin the moment, but that door looks like it's about to close.”He was right. The ancient stone door was slowly sliding downward.Kael immediately stepped forward.“Move.”We hurried toward it.Cassian followed.I expected Kael to stop him, but he didn't.Maybe because we needed answers.Maybe because, for the first time, Cassian looked just as uncertain as the rest of us.The moment we crossed the threshold, the door slammed shut behind us.Darkness swallowed everything.I instinctively r
