BENEATH THE FACADE
Behind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits. CHAPTER 4 Emily's POV: As he stood by the door, his hands holding the tray suddenly lost their grip. The plates crashed to the floor, shattering into pieces. The sound of broken ceramics filled the air, echoing off the walls of my room. “Emily, did you say something?,” My father asked as he approached me, ignoring the broken plates. “Father, I said I won't be marrying Billionaire Ethan Kingston” I repeated loud and clear this time around. “Emily, you would do no such thing”, he said, his tone rising, laced with a mix of anger, shock and desperation. His eyes widened with alarm “All my life, Emily, all, did I give up for you”, he continued, backing me now. “I gave up my dreams, my goal, everything” My anger had been simmering, waiting to boil over I didn't wait to hear the last of it before giving him a reply. “You did everything you ever did for yourself, not for me in particular,” I shouted angrily before breaking down into tears. “Don't make this about me. Don't drag me into your mess, fix it!” I retorted. “Emilyyy!” he screamed as he raised his hands to hit me but was suddenly restrained, and took a step backward. The air seemed to vibrate with tension as he echoed the words, “Emily watch it”, he continued, wading his index finger at me “What did I ever ask for in return?” “Nothing, and now I ask one simple task of you, to marry Billionaire Ethan Kingston, for your own good, and you refuse” he continued screaming at the top of his voice. He made for the door now. I expected him to leave the room but instead he bent to the floor, picked up a piece of the broken plate and began inflicting injury on himself. He had hurt me but I couldn't watch him hurt himself, so I got up immediately to stop him. “Father, enough, it's enough” I said, struggling to collect the piece from his hand. In the process, I cut myself too and we were both bleeding now. “Emily, it's just for the love I have for you. I can't watch you continue suffering. You deserve better” “And how sure are you he'd treat me any better?”, the tears I had fought hard to resist, now came rushing like a torrent. “Father, I'd do it”, I said “Thank you Emily, it's for the best” he said but I cut him “Don't thank me yet, I'd do it on one condition” I said, rising up, as the cloth I used to stop the blood was now soaked. “What condition, Emily?” He asked, his eyes locked unto mine, his expression unreadable. The room fell silent , the only sound, the soft hum of the air conditioner “The deal” my voice firm and resolute As he heard the deal, he stood up, now very much interested. “What about the deal?”BENEATH THE FACADEBehind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits.Chapter 62Emily’s POV: I woke up to the soft stirrings of Josh’s breath beside me. His little hands were curled into fists, resting above his head the way he always slept—like a warrior at peace. For a second, I let myself forget the rest of the world. Just me and him, tucked in the quiet calm of morning. But reality didn't take long to return.Today marked the end of my one-month leave. Time to step back into work, back into meetings and schedules and emails that never stop coming. Back to my children— Ace and everyone of them. I had missed them so much. And more importantly, back into the world that somehow kept turning even while mine had paused.I sat up slowly and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. Josh blinked his open too, squinting at the morning light.“Good morning, baby,” I whispered, brushing his curls off his forehead. He blinked up at me with glassy eyes, then yawned, mouth wide, arms stretc

The kind of night where shadows whisper louder than words, and everything you thought you knew starts to unravel.I hadn’t slept. Not a blink. My pillow was still damp from the tears I hadn’t even realized I’d cried. That message, those words had taken root in my mind, growing like a weed I couldn’t rip out.“Your father is not who you think he is. Watch out. You might as well be the next victim.”I read it over and over until the words lost shape, but the fear stayed sharp.I kept thinking, what does it mean? Who sent it? And why now?I wanted to believe it was just a prank. A sick joke from someone who had nothing better to do. But deep down, I knew better. Too many things had stopped making sense for this to be nothing. My

The darkness in the room was thick, the kind that made shadows look heavier and the air feel still. The fan turned slowly above me, humming like a lullaby. I was somewhere between sleep and wakefulness when my phone lit up on the nightstand.A soft vibration.I stirred.Groggy, I reached for it, barely lifting my head from the pillow. I assumed it was a message from Nyla checking on Josh, or maybe Eddy checking in again, like he sometimes did when sleep wouldn’t come for either of us.But the moment my thumb tapped the screen and my eyes focused on the massage, the drowsiness drained from my body like water from a broken cup.Something in my chest tightened.Because what stared

I was heading to the kitchen, barefoot, quiet, when the sound of his footsteps slowed just outside the dining room. I paused by the corner wall, barely breathing, my heart suddenly louder than it should’ve been.“I’ll be gone for a few days,” he said, his tone calm, almost too calm. “Business trip. I shouldn’t be long.”He was speaking to the cook. His voice was low, but each word landed like a quiet knock on the door of my chest.Gone.For days.I don’t know why my stomach sank the way it did, relief and fear crashing into each other. I pressed my back against the wall and closed my eyes. Maybe this was the space I needed. Maybe, just maybe, this was my chance to think clearly. Or breathe without pretending. But why did the idea of him leaving feel like something was cracking inside me?Something I

The cook had left a while ago, but my words clung to the walls like smoke. They replayed in my mind, again and again, no matter how hard I tried to shut them out.I sat on the edge of the bed, arms wrapped tightly around my legs, drawing them to my chest like I could hold myself together that way. My back was hunched, my forehead resting on my knees. my whole body trembled not from cold, but from something deeper. Something I didn’t have the strength to name.My heartbeat thudded in my ears, fast and heavy, as if my own body was trying to remind me I was still alive even when everything inside me felt broken. My eyes burned. The kind of burn that came from crying too much, too har

He was drinking something I wasn't sure of from the glass cup and scrolling through his phone. Maybe, something that would further enhance our night, I guessed. My eyes moved round the room, not sure of what I was looking for exactly but I was lost in admiration of his minimalist bedroom. The stark white, minimalist furnishing of the living room was in sync with it's modern architecture, with teal coloured cushions. What was breath-taking was the glass wall facing the back door which gave a beautiful view of the outside world. My first night which was spent in one of the guest rooms, now my room made me conclude that his room was going to be made of gold. So seeing this made me wonder why his room was this simple. He had a nice flowervase by his bedside and scented candles and diffuser were at the other side. At ea
