Chapter 9:Blood and Secrets (I)

last update publish date: 2026-08-04 21:32:28

The walk back from Mira's lodge felt longer than it should have.

Like the ground itself had shifted while I was inside and I was now walking across a different world than the one I had left. The same trees. The same stone paths. The same pack grounds I had lived on my entire life.

But I was different.

I knew that now.

I had always been different. I just hadn't known what it meant.

The moon above me was silver and full and so bright it cast shadows even through the trees. I kept looking up at her. Kept catching myself staring like she was going to say something. Like after everything Mira had just told me the moon owed me at least a few words of explanation.

She stayed silent.

She always did.

She speaks through actions, Selene said inside me. Not words. She always has.

I pulled my shawl tighter and kept walking.

I was almost at my mother's cottage when I stopped dead.

The light was on inside.

It was past midnight. My mother went to bed at nine without fail every single night of her life. She said sleep was the only luxury that poverty couldn't take from you and she intended to claim every hour of it.

But the light was on.

She was waiting.

My stomach turned over slowly.

She knew.

I pushed the door open.

My mother was sitting at the kitchen table with her hands wrapped around a cup of tea that had long gone cold. Still dressed. Her dark hair loose around her shoulders. She looked up the moment I stepped inside.

Her eyes went straight to mine.

And what crossed her face in that single unguarded second before she pulled herself together was not surprise.

It was relief.

The deep exhaling relief of someone who has been holding a breath for twenty one years and has finally been allowed to let it go.

"Sit down Lyra," she said quietly.

I sat.

She looked at me for a long moment. At my eyes. At the silver light living in them now that apparently everyone could see but me. She looked at them the way you look at something you have been dreading and praying for in equal measure for so long that when it finally arrives you don't know whether to weep or rejoice.

She looked like she wanted to do both.

"You went to Mira," she said.

"She asked me to." I folded my hands on the table. Steadied myself. "Mom She told me about the bloodline. About Aela. About the Moon Witches." I paused. "About what I am."

My mother closed her eyes.

She sat like that for three long seconds.

When she opened them they were bright.

"She didn't tell you everything," she said.

The kitchen went very quiet.

"What do you mean?" I said.

My mother stood up. She crossed to the small wooden chest in the corner of the room the one she had always told me held old letters and keepsakes. The one I had never once seen her open in twenty one years.

She opened it now.

She reached inside and lifted out something wrapped in dark cloth. Carried it to the table carefully, the way you carry something fragile. Something that matters. She set it down between us.

"Open it," she said.

I looked at her.

She nodded.

I reached out with hands that were not entirely steady and unwrapped the cloth.

Inside was a letter.

Old and thick, the paper yellowed at the edges, the ink faded to deep brown. But the handwriting was clear deliberate and strong, the handwriting of someone who chose every word.

I read the first line.

Then I stopped.

Then I read it again.

My daughter. If you are reading this then the time has finally come and everything I sacrificed will have meant something.*

My daughter.

I looked up at my mother.

"Who wrote this?" I whispered.

Her jaw was tight with the effort of holding herself together.

"Your father," she said

I had spent my whole life telling myself I didn't care about my father.

I had built an entire personality around not caring. Around being fine with the empty space where that half of my history should have been. Around watching other girls run to their fathers after ceremonies and pack gatherings and telling myself that I didn't need that, that I was fine, that some people just didn't have fathers and that was simply how it was.

I had been lying to myself for twenty one years.

Because the moment my mother said those two words your father something cracked open in my chest that had nothing to do with the mate bond or the Moon Witch bloodline or any of the enormous things I had already discovered tonight.

It was just old and simple and human.

And it hurt.

"Who was he?" I said. My voice came out smaller than I intended.

My mother sat back down. She reached across the table and covered my hands with hers.

"His name was Caelan Morvaine," she said. "He was not a pack wolf. He was a lone wolf one of the old bloodlines, the ones that predate the pack system. Wanderers. People said they were strange and kept away from them." Something soft moved through her eyes. "He was the most extraordinary person I have ever met."

"Where did you meet him?"

"He found me," she said. "When I was nineteen. He said he had been following a feeling for three weeks across four territories and when he finally found me he just stood there and looked at me and said " there you are"Like he had always known I existed and had simply been waiting to locate me." She smiled. A small real smile that had grief around the edges. "His wolf recognised the bloodline seal inside me. He knew what I was carrying before I did."

"Did he know about the Moon Witch connection?"

"Yes," she said. "He came from a line of wolves who had always known. Who had kept the knowledge alive quietly for two centuries when everyone else either forgot or pretended to." Her hands tightened on mine. "He loved me Lyra. Completely and without condition. I need you to know that before I tell you the rest."

My stomach tightened.

"What happened?" I asked.

She looked down at our joined hands.

"He was hunted," she said simply.

The word landed like a stone in still water.

"By who?"

"The same people who hunted the Moon Witches two centuries ago," she said. "There is an order. Old and secret and still active wolves who have kept the original mission alive across generations. Who believe that the Moon Witch bloodline is a threat to the pack hierarchy and must be eliminated completely." Her voice was steady but her hands were not. "They found out about your father. About what he knew and who he had found. He sent us here to Ironveil, to Mira who he trusted and he led them away from us." A breath. "He never came back."

The kitchen was completely silent.

I sat with that for a long moment.

My father had not left.

My father had died protecting us.

And I had spent twenty one years believing I was nobody's priority, nobody's choice, nobody's enough when the truth was that someone had loved me so much they had walked into danger to keep me breathing.

Selene pressed herself against my ribs.

Warm and steady.

You were always loved, she said softly. You just didn't know where to look

I pressed the back of my hand to my mouth.

I was not going to cry again.

I had already cried everything I had last night and I was not doing it again.

"The letter," my mother said gently. "Read it Lyra. He wrote it for you. He made me promise to give it to you when your eyes changed."

I looked down at the paper in my hands.

My daughter.

I have never met you. But I have loved you since the moment I knew you existed and I will love you long after I am gone. That is not something that requires presence. It is simply what you are to me.

You carry something extraordinary inside you. Something the world tried to destroy and failed. I need you to know that what you are is not a burden or a curse or a danger. It is a gift. The most ancient and sacred gift the moon ever gave.*

Do not be afraid of it.

Do not hide it.

Do not let anyone any Alpha, any pack, any system built by frightened men tell you that your power makes you wrong. It makes you exactly right.*

I am sorry I could not be there.

Make them remember your name.

Your father, Caelan Morvaine

I sat with the letter in my hands for a long time.

My mother sat across from me and didn't try to fill the silence and that was exactly right because there were no words that would have fit inside it.

Eventually I folded the letter carefully. Held it.

"There is one more thing," my mother said.

I looked up.

She hesitated. Like she was choosing how to say this. Like she had been rehearsing it and was now discovering that rehearsed words felt wrong in the actual moment.

"The order that hunted your father," she said. "The ones who have kept the mission alive." She met my eyes. "Mira believes they already know the seal broke. The Blood Moon would have told them. Events like that a Moon Witch seal shattering after two centuries they leave a mark in the spirit world that people who know how to read it would feel immediately." She paused. "Which means they are already looking for you."

Then after a while Elder Mira finally spoke .I need to tell you a story," she said. "And I need you to listen to all of it before you ask questions. Can you do that?""Yes," I said. She looked at me for a moment longer. Then she folded her hands in her lap and looked into the fire and began."Two hundred years ago," she said, "there were no pack Alphas."I opened my mouth. She held up one finger.I closed it."There were wolves," she continued. "Many of them. Living in territories, yes. Forming communities, yes. But the rigid hierarchy you know Alpha, Beta, omega, the ranking system, the dominance structure none of that existed. Wolves lived differently then." She paused. "And alongside the wolves lived another kind entirely. Not wolves. Not human. Something older than both."The fire popped softly."The Moon Witches," she said. The words landed in the quiet of the lodge like stones dropped into still water.I felt Selene go very still inside me."They were the first children of the m

The courtyard was already full by the time Sera and I got there.Every wolf in the Ironveil Pack, warriors, omegas, elders, mothers with babies balanced on their hips, all of them packed into the main courtyard with their breath coming out in small white clouds. The great pack hall at one end, the elder lodge at the other, and in the middle, the raised stone platform where the Alpha addressed his people.I had stood in this crowd a hundred times.Always at the back. Always invisible.Today felt different.People moved when they saw me coming Not out of respect More like they didn't want to be too close, like whatever had happened to me last night was something they could catch if they stood near enough. I watched the small shifts, the shuffled feet, the turned shoulders, eyes that found somewhere else to be the moment they almost met mine, and I felt Selene stir low in my chest.Let them move. Her voice was quieter than usual. We never needed their closeness anyway.I kept walking.Se

Then I looked back eventually and he said "What happened to you tonight, isa "was not a reflection of your worth." His voice was quiet and Steady. "Whatever that Alpha told himself to justify it was about his weakness. His limitations. Not yours"The moon doesn't make mistakes."I stood in the dark between the trees and let those words move through me.Because the moon hadn't made a mistake tonight. She had made two choices. One had broken me open. One was standing behind me right now.And I was not ready for any of this for what was waking up inside me or what Storm had just done or what the word two meant or the way Selene was pressing her nose toward Kael like a compass finding north.I was not ready. But the moon, apparently, did not care."Thank you," I said. "For not walking away."A beat of quiet."Anytime," he said. And he meant it. I could feel that he meant it not as a pleasantry but as a promise. So I walked into the forest.I did not look back. But Selene did.She looked

  • Beneath the cursed moon:The Alpha Rejected Mate    Chapter 5:What the moon sent

I don't know how long we sat there.Long enough for the red moon to shift further across the sky. Kael hadn't moved from his log.He hadn't spoken either. Hadn't pushed. Hadn't filled the silence with uncomfortable sympathy or clumsy questions or that particular brand of pity that felt worse than being ignored. He just sat there calm and solid and present like he had nowhere else to be and no opinion about how long this was going to take.I pressed the cloth to my knuckles one more time and looked at him sideways. He was looking up at the moon. And I don't know why but that was when it really hit me what he looked like. Properly. Because the first time I had seen him step out of the dark I had been too frightened and too raw to take him in properly. Now, in the deep red moonlight, with the forest quiet around us and his face tilted up and his expression open in the way people's faces only get when they think nobody is watchingI felt my breath do something strange. He was beautiful.
