Kassidy's POV

Last night was wild, or should I say crazy and unbelievable.

I had been in bed for maybe an hour, drifting toward sleep, when I heard a thud followed by a loud moan from the room next door, and then another quickly after the first. I could recognize that voice even in my worst nightmare. It was Nova. Her voice was low at first, something I could bear, but then, out of nowhere, it became louder.

"Faster, Eli," Nova moaned loudly. "Yes, baby,"

I lay there and stared at the ceiling. When I couldn't take it anymore, I tried putting a pillow over my head to block out the sound, but it did nothing. I never realized how thin the walls in this house were until tonight.

Why couldn't they quiet down? I had an interview at the pizza place in the morning, and I needed all the sleep I could get.

I tried my earphones. I found a playlist and turned the volume up until my ears ached. But I could still hear it underneath the music, or maybe I was just imagining it by that point, but either way, I was wide awake and miserable.

They finished eventually. I knew because the house had gone quiet, but I still couldn't sleep.

At five thirty in the morning, I got up, pulled on a hoodie over my pyjamas, and went downstairs. My plan was simple. I would get someone's bowl from the cabinet, get a spoon, eat my cereal, wash everything up, and put it back before anyone woke up. In and out. Nobody would even know.

But the kitchen light was already on when I stepped inside.

Eli was standing at the counter in grey sweatpants and a white t-shirt, and he looked like he was waiting for the coffee machine to finish. Suddenly, a vivid image of what he had been doing with Nova mere hours ago filtered into my mind, and I groaned inwardly. He looked up when I walked in and I almost turned around and went back upstairs.

I didn't, because I was hungry and sleep-deprived. Instead, I walked to the cabinet and opened it.

"You're up early," Eli commented.

"Nice observation." I reached for a bowl.

"It's five thirty-five in the morning, Townsend."

"I'm aware of the time, Eli, thank you."

He watched me take the bowl down and reach for a spoon. "Why are you up at five thirty?"

"Why are you?" I pulled the spoon out of the drawer and turned toward the fridge for my milk.

"I asked first."

"And I chose not to answer." I got the milk, got my cereal from the counter where I had left it, and sat down at the kitchen table. He was still watching me with that expression I hated sometimes. He looked too concerned for someone who supposedly couldn't stand me.

"Are you eating Marcus' cereal?" he asked.

"I'm eating my cereal, which I bought with my own money and which I am storing on this counter because I don't have a space for it in my room." I poured the milk. "And this is Marcus' bowl, which I am going to wash and return before he wakes up. Please, stop asking me annoying questions."

Eli ignored my plea. "Why don't you have your own bowl?"

I said nothing.

"Townsend."

"Drop it."

"You don't have dishes." It wasn't a question. He said it the way he said most things, flat and direct.

"I said drop it, please." I picked up the spoon. "Go and drink your coffee and leave me alone."

"I'm just asking..."

"And I don't want to answer!' I retorted in annoyance. "You ask me questions as if you care about the answers, and then you find a way to use whatever I say to make me feel small. I have not slept, and I honestly am not in the mood for it this morning."

He went quiet, and I felt myself close to tears, which annoyed me even further. The coffee machine beeped, and he turned to pour himself a cup, and for a few minutes, the only sound in the kitchen was my spoon against Marcus' bowl.

"At least get some sleep before daybreak." He finally said to me. "You look like you haven't slept at all."

"I wonder why that is." The words came out before I could stop them.

"What is that supposed to mean?" he asked.

"It means the walls in this house are thin, Eli. That's all it means. I have an important place to be in a few hours, and you guys kept me up with your lovemaking."

The silence that followed even worse than the first. He stared at me, and I glared at my cereal, and I could feel the discomfort radiating off him from across the kitchen.

He set his cup down. For a second, he just looked at me, and something different from the usual coldness shifted in his expression as though he was choosing his next words.

"I saw you," he said finally. "At Target. With Reynolds."

I looked up from my cereal. "And?"

"Nothing. Just be..." He started to say, before footsteps came from the kitchen door. I smelled Nova's strong perfumes before she even walked in.

She was wrapped in a dressing gown, black hair loose around her shoulders, and blinking slowly. She looked so well rested, which infuriated me even more. Why did she get to sleep soundly after keeping me awake all night?

Silently and furiously, I stabbed at my soggy cereal. Nova glanced between Eli and me curiously.

"Good morning." Her voice was careful. "Is everything okay?"

"Good morning, Nova." I greeted.

"We were just talking," Eli said, at the same time as my greeting.

Nova looked at him for a second, then at me, and I could see her doing the math, reading the tension in the room.

"Are you sure?" she asked with narrowed eyes.

"I'm done, actually." I stood up, took the bowl to the sink and washed the cereal away quickly, dried it and put it back in the cabinet. I put the spoon back in the drawer. I picked up my cereal box and my milk. "Excuse me."

I walked out of the kitchen without looking at either of them.

Behind me, I heard Nova say something to Eli in a low voice. I didn't catch the words, and I didn't want to.

I went back upstairs and sat on my bare mattress with my cereal box and ate the rest of it dry, straight from the box, with my hands, while I thought about my interview.

  • Best Friend’s Brother Shouldn’t Know How I Taste    45 - Extra Clingy

Kassidy’s POV Ever since Nova returned to the house, she became extra clingy with Eli. It was like she was trying to plaster herself to his side to erase whatever had happened, and she was always one step behind him, even in school. If he walked into the kitchen, she was right there touching his shoulder. If he was walking across campus, she was anchoring herself to his arm. I watched it all from a distance, keeping my mouth shut, but the hypocrisy of it made my stomach turn every single day.Eli tried talking to me a few days later, but I ignored him entirely. I didn't want to be included in their drama anymore, because holding Nova's secret while remembering the heat of Eli's mouth on that beach was already tearing me apart. We were in the living room on a Thursday evening, trying to catch up on a show together with the rest of the housemates. Marcus and Devon were arguing about the remote, but when they went to the kitchen to grab snacks, Eli seized that moment. He leaned across t

  • Best Friend’s Brother Shouldn’t Know How I Taste    44 - All Night

Eli's POVFor the rest of that day, I was completely restless. My mind was an absolute mess, spinning in circles as I paced around the house, unable to find a single second of peace. I couldn't stop thinking about my suspension from the team. Even worse was the constant replay of Kassidy’s reaction to the kiss. The way she had shut it down so fast in the driveway, calling it casual and bolting from the car, left a bitter taste in my mouth that I couldn't scrub away.By the time night fell, the walls of the house felt like they were closing in on me. I just needed to escape the noise. I grabbed my keys, slipped out the front door and decided to go to a bar nearby to get some drinks, alone. The tavern down the street was crowded enough that nobody was paying attention to me. That was exactly what I wanted. I sat on a stool at the far end of the counter, ordering a whiskey and staring down at the amber liquid as I swirled the ice around. I was halfway through my second glass when a heavy

  • Best Friend’s Brother Shouldn’t Know How I Taste    43 - Drowning in the dark

Kassidy’s POVThe mystery man walked out before I could even understand what had just happened. He walked through the heavy bathroom door without looking back, his footsteps fading rapidly down the carpeted hallway. My brain felt entirely scrambled, frozen in place as I stared in shock at Nova. She was way too calm for what I just witnessed. There was no panic on her face, no frantic reaching for excuses, and no sign of guilt whatsoever. Instead, she pushed past me to go to the mirrors, her shoulder brushing mine as if I were nothing more than a minor inconvenience in her way.I watched her through the glass as she unzipped her small purse. She pulled out a tube of lip gloss, twisted it open, and meticulously fixed her lipstick. She didn't skip a beat, smoothing the color over her lips and patting down her hair, fixing her makeup until every single strand was back in its proper place. Once she was completely satisfied with her reflection, she turned to face me directly."What you saw

  • Best Friend’s Brother Shouldn’t Know How I Taste    42 - Mystery Man

Kassidy's POVThe trip back home was silent. Neither of us said a word, but I could tell that Eli was excited about our kiss. I kept my face turned toward the passenger window, staring at the passing trees, but I wasn't actually looking at them. I was reliving the kiss. My mind kept looping back to the heat of his mouth and how his fingers had gripped my waist, and the short make out session that happened right after that in the front seat.I couldn’t deny how good it felt, because it had sent a rush through me that I was still tingling from. But at the same time, I felt horrible. The initial excitement quickly soured into a deep, heavy guilt in my stomach. Eli was in a full relationship with Nova, and they lived under the very same roof as me. I had crossed a massive line, kissing him like that when he belonged to someone else. What the fuck was I thinking?!Fear started mixing with the guilt too, because I was scared of Nova and what she would do to me. If she ever found out what we

  • Best Friend’s Brother Shouldn’t Know How I Taste    41 - His Firecracker

Eli's POVKassidy was reluctant to get out of the car at first, but once her feet hit the sand, I could see her fighting her smile. She looked out at the ocean and I watched her shoulders relax, watched the tension drain out of her face. It was like she was seeing something she had forgotten existed before now.We started walking along the shoreline without any real destination. The area around Lake Michigan was quiet and mostly empty, just the sound of waves and the occasional seagull screaming about something. I kept my hands in my pockets and tried not to look at her too much, but it was hard.Despite the hair band that held it in place, her long dark hair was blowing around her face in the wind, strands getting tangled and stuck to her lips. The flowery blue dress she was wearing flapped against her legs, and the sun was hitting her skin, tanning her slowly, making her glow in a way that was making my heart flutter in my chest. She looked so beautiful it was painful to look at her

  • Best Friend’s Brother Shouldn’t Know How I Taste    40 - Shell of Emotions

Kassidy's POVI woke up gasping again, from another nightmare. The nightmare was already fading, but the feeling remained, that sick sense of panic laying low in my stomach. Sweating and panting, I lay spread eagled on my bed, staring at the ceiling and waiting for my heart to stop trying to kill me.I knew I would have stayed there for several minutes, if not for my phone's vibration from the night stand. I heaved myself up and reached for the phone to see a text from Piper.PIPER: hey, Kas. I'm really worried about you, please call me. Please. Then another one, sent maybe ten minutes later.PIPER: Look, I know you're avoiding me but I'm worried about you. Just let me know you're alive and well, okay? And then a third one, more recent.PIPER: Hey Did you know Eli got suspended from the team? Dad is losing his mind over it. Do you know why?It was that last message that forced me to sit up. Suspended from the team? Why? That didn't make any sense. Eli lived for hockey; he was the capt
