Avery’s POV

It had been a very good week for me, working as Angie's private tutor was easier than I initially expected, and Angie had been so nice to me.

“Maybe it isn't yet time to show her true colors,” I thought, if Aunty Vivian had taught me anything it was that I couldn't trust anybody.

When my parents passed and she came to my father's house as a guardian, she was so nice, almost perfect, she fed me, clothed me and treated me like a princess for more than one year, I was so happy and allowed her into my parent's room giving her access to all my parent's files and deeds, after she seized everything my parents left for me, she turned into this monster that I had to face every day.

“At least for now,” I said out loud on my way to her house.

She had continued to give me big tips every single day and I had been able to save a lot of money while also giving my aunty a good amount of money. I made sure to always change it into smaller bills so that it looked like a lot of money.

“I don't care what you do as long as you keep this money coming,” my aunty told me, she has continued to drink away every single dim I had given to her.

“Here we go,” I said entering into my regular workstation.

Getting to Angie's house or should I say mansion, the day went on like any other day, I taught and she learned quickly, with the reading techniques I taught her, she had been able to cover a lot of topics making my already easy work easier.

Our classes finished earlier than the time allocated and we always talked about random things till it was time to leave. I tried not to tell her my personal issues during this time.

“It's time for me to get going,” I told Angie as I packed my bag to leave, we had been talking for a while now and I was getting hungry, I needed to go home and eat something.

“Okay but can you come tomorrow?” She asked with pleading eyes.

But it was a Saturday and I didn't need to come to work, why would she need me here?

“Why, is there a topic you want us to cover?” I wanted to know the reason she requested my presence.

“No, no but it's my anniversary with my boyfriend, I wanted you to be here for the celebration,” she said with a smile expecting a positive response.

“Oh I'm sorry, I won't be able to make it,” I said as I shook my head and carried my bag.

I didn't want to come to that celebration any other for that matter, they were very rich people and I didn't want to be embarrassed, but apart from that, I didn't want to get too close to her, she was my boss and I wanted to keep it that way.

“Oh come on, please…” she begged, really wanting me to be here.

“I can't, it's a family occasion, besides I have nothing to wear” I protested, thinking of a very good excuse.

“I thought you'd say that,” she said with a smile, bringing out a bag and handing it to me.

I looked through the bag, it was a dress with shoes and jewelry.

“I can't accept this but I will come, only for an hour,” I said finally succumbing to her pressure.

Angie was already doing a lot for me, I didn't want to owe her too much.

“Yesssss, thank you, thank you, thank you,” she said in excitement.

“But why would she want me there,” I thought as I went home, she had already paid me for the day.

Why did she go to the point of getting me clothes? What did she want from me? These questions bugged my mind but I decided to think nothing of it and go back for the party or whatever when my aunty went out on Saturday.

She always went out for the whole day on Saturday.

“Better make that change before you forget,” I admonished myself as I proceeded to make the one thousand dollars into a bunch of 20-dollar notes. I divided them in two, I would give her half tonight and the other half tomorrow morning so she can get on with her drinking.

“What a waste of money,” I sighed at the thought that all my hard work was spent in a bar.

I met Aunty Vivian on her way out, she didn't even wait to beat me up, she just took the money and hurried away.

“That's strange,” I thought but remembered that it was something that she did when she desperately needed a drink.

She was never always like this, I just didn't know why she changed, she always looked at me with guilt and pity during times like this, it was almost like she wanted to tell me something but then she would rush to the bar and go back to being drunk Aunty Vivian.

I took a deep breath, sighing as I ate and went to bed.

The next morning, Aunty Vivian was crying for hours, she locked herself in the room so I couldn't get to her.

“I can't do this anymore,” I said as I dropped the money and a note saying that I was going to work.

I know I lied but I couldn't bear to hear her crying from the other room, I was thankful I had a place to go.

At the party I struggled so hard to fit in, I regretted not taking the clothes Angie offered me because I was mistaken for the help so many times, all in all, it was lively, better than sitting at home.

Then came the bully, I didn't know who he was but he looked like Angie.

“Hey beautiful, wanna come over to my room later?” He asked loudly with a devilish grin.

“No thank you,” I replied, not wanting any trouble.

But he didn't stop, he kept teasing me and saying inappropriate things. Just when I thought I was going to lose my mind, I heard a voice thunder from behind me.

“Quit playing around Quinn,” the voice said, I knew that voice, it was very family.

“Yes Father,” the bully replied and scurried away.

So that was Angie's brother, big brother I supposed because he looked a lot older than her.

I turned to thank Mr. Amos, why was he always coming from behind me, I wondered.

“Thank…” but before I spoke he stopped me.

“No need for that human, just stay out of my way,” he said harshly, not even looking at me.

As I was about to protest, Angie came running to her father, her eyes filled with tears.

“Daddy, my caterer bailed out at the last minute,” she cried, devastated and confused.

Avery's Point Of View “You shouldn't have come here,” he whispered weakly, his eyes barely open.“What do you mean?” I asked confusedly, my mind in shambles.I had been looking for Amos the whole time; he even called out to me in my dreams.I didn't understand why he was driving me away now.I waited for a response, for him to say something that made sense at least, but he didn't speak.I tried to touch him, but he pulled away like I had some contagious virus. My heart was shattered, my mind in shambles, and I didn't know what to think or believe.“Don't waste your life-source on me,” he finally said calmly, his eyes distant. He didn't look shocked that I could heal him; he already knew.“You knew who I was and my destiny, didn't you?” I asked calmly, hoping he would prove me wrong.“Yes,” he said dryly, his eyes looking everywhere but at me.I wanted to scream about his betrayal, hit him, do something to let out the pain and anger I was feeling. But just then, we heard something e

  • Best Friend's Mate   Chapter 122 - Finding Amos

Avery's Point Of View “That's his blood,” I said calmly, my eye steady on the ground.“Are you sure?” Angie asked silently, her eyes fixed on me.I didn't respond to her; I didn't have to because the men ran in front of us, following the trail I had given them.Walking behind were Angie and Quinn, staying awkwardly by my side.“Avery, I'm sorry about lashing out,” Angie finally said, her voice coming out as a whisper.“No, you are not,” I responded firmly, increasing my pace.I was done with the excuses and her unnecessary apologies.“No, please…wait,” she called after me, but Quinn held her back.I was more concerned about the fact that Amos was actually nowhere to be found than all her stupidity.I was sending them on a wild goose chase because I suspected that they weren’t good people, and the reason they wanted to find Amos wasn't an honest one either.I had to keep them distracted while I formulated a real plan.Night came quickly, and we eventually had to stop at a nearby cave

  • Best Friend's Mate   Chapter 121 - His Warning

Avery’s Point Of View“He is here somewhere, I am sure of it,” I said confidently, as we searched through the forest. We had been searching for three days with no sign of Amos, and the men with us had started to become tired.I had trailed his scent for days and ended up on two different wild goose chases, but I was sure this time.It was as if Amos had intentionally made it very difficult to find him, and it was making me lose my mind.“Cover the entire area,” Quinn ordered anxiously, running his hand through his hair. The day before, he had been spiralling, imagining the worst when another day had passed without finding Amos.It took Angie and a lot of effort to calm him down. Both he and Angie carried a strange sense of guilt, blaming themselves for everything that had happened so far.A part of me wanted to comfort them and tell them it wasn't their fault, but I wasn't delusional; it was partly their fault, and that couldn't be denied. If they hadn't sided with the enemies thing w

  • Best Friend's Mate   Chapter 120 - Last act of love

Amos' Point Of View Seize him!” A woman ordered again, as the men began to close in on me.I looked around me, and I was grossly outnumbered.I didn't know whether to run or fight; I didn't even know if escape was possible.“What do you want from me?” I asked calmly, looking at the woman who seemed to be their ring leader. As if I didn't know what all of this was about.“You hold the second key,” she said flatly, looking bored.“Hand it over and go your way,” she said quietly, stretching her hand towards me.“You think if I really did, you would be able to catch me?” I asked calmly, unfazed by her offer.Something flashed in her eyes, a look of uncertainty; it happened so fast I almost missed it.I took a deep breath. I still had hopes of turning things around.“What do you mean?” She asked curiously, looking confused. My assumption was right; she didn't know what the key looked like.Maya had made the mistake of sending her out blindly, a mistake that would cost her.“You don't know

  • Best Friend's Mate   Chapter 119 - Another side of things

Avery's Point Of View Morning came faster than usual. I didn't know if it was because I didn't get a wink of sleep or something else. They had all left the cave to me, giving me enough space to rest, but sleep was far from me.“Avery! It's Ashley, can I come in?” Her voice came from the opening of the cave.“Sure,” I managed to respond, still sitting at the same spot she had left me the day before.“You didn't sleep as well, I see,” she said calmly, seeming unsurprised to find me exactly as she had left me.“Why didn't you sleep, though?” I asked her curiously, my eyes piercing hers.“I am scared,” she admitted quietly, lowering her eyes.“We used to be a happy family, I used to have my father and brother, but I decided to play a little game, and it's costing us everything,” she whispered softly, tears welling up in her eyes.“I don't understand,” I said honestly, running my hand through my hair.“I knew…I knew from the moment you stepped into my house, I knew exactly who you were…”

  • Best Friend's Mate   Chapter 118 - Another Mission

Avery's Point of View “I shouldn't do this,” I said softly, my hands shaking. I opened the letter, but there was nothing written in it. I looked at it for a long time, almost as if I was lost in a trance. “Run!!!” A voice ordered, sending shivers down my spine. I looked around to see if anyone was there, but found no one. “Run!!! The voice came again, more urgent than before. And for some reason, I was convinced that I should listen, so I did. I ran out of the room the seer had told me to wait in straight to Ashley, praying she was still under the tree. “Wait,” I said desperately, making her halt in her tracks. I was out of breath, my hands shaking as I reached for her. “Let's go together,” I said calmly, my eyes filled with determination. She didn't say another word, just grabbed my hand, shifted to her werewolf form, threw me on her back, and ran. Faster than I have ever seen, almost too fast even for me. “Get down,” she said quietly, as her pace slowed to a halt. I
