The bodyguard didn’t hesitate to carry out Killian’s command.
In the next minute, Kiara found herself locked up in the extra bedroom upstairs.
She pounded on the door for a long time, screaming until her throat hurt and her fingers became numb.
Worn out and devastated, she leaned against the door, her hate for the man increasing.
Killian clearly did not love her. He never liked her from the beginning.
Why then was he torturing her?
He could even bring his mistress and child home without caring about how she would feel. What did she ever do wrong to deserve so much resentment from him?
Kiara wiped her tears.
She staggered across the room and stood by the window, dazed and numbed as she stared at the swing below.
A memory flashed in her mind, and she spaced out.
The same swing she’d always accompanied her baby on. She could imagine her sitting on it right now, while she stood behind, pushing her gently.
She imagined her baby’s voice as she repeated the same question she always asked her.
When would Killian join them? When would he push her on the swing as well?
Her phone’s ringtone brought Kiara back to the present, pulling her out of the memory that only intensified her heartache.
Her best friend’s name flashed on the screen.
Kiara answered the call, hoping Maya had good news to share with her. At least, something to calm her grief.
“You’re lucky, Kiara. Greg just returned from his business trip. I’ve told him everything, and he has agreed to take up your divorce case.”
Kiara sighed in relief.
“Please forward your information to him. So he can start preparing the files and send them soon.”
“Thank you, Maya,” Kiara replied.
With Maya’s brother’s help, the divorce would be swift, and she wouldn’t encounter any trouble. Very soon, she and Killian wouldn’t have to see each other again.
“Your voice sounds hoarse. Are you still crying, Dear?” Maya didn’t hang up. “Kiara, I know it hurts, but please be kind to yourself, okay? What happened was a tragedy, and Lily shouldn’t have left us so early… however, your baby’s finally resting. She’s finally free from constant illness, isn’t she?”
If only Kiara’s grief were caused by her baby’s death.
Her baby was in a safer place, and a part of her was relieved that she was finally freed from the burden of constant illness, even though her heart still longed for her baby’s presence.
“Kiara…” Maya continued. “I’m still concerned about your decision. Killian was wrong for not being there for your baby, and you have the right to divorce if you hate him for that. But your family… what’s gonna happen to them?”
Her family…
Right now, Kiara just wanted to be free.
“What’s the point of staying in a loveless marriage, Maya?” She sniffed. “Everyone deserves happiness, right?”
“You’re right.” Maya sighed. “And I’m glad that you’ve finally opened your eyes and realized that you deserve someone who loves you. Anyway, don’t log into social media these days. Distract yourself with something else.”
At Maya’s words, Kiara was a bit confused.
After hanging up, her confusion turned into curiosity.
Why did Maya ask her not to check social media? Was something happening there that she wasn’t supposed to know?
Despite Maya’s warning, Kiara couldn’t ignore the growing dread. She logged into her social media account and scrolled through the several posts on her wall.
Her account was tagged in all of them.
A video of her confronting Killian during the funeral and demanding a divorce was also circulating.
“The statement is true that humans will never be satisfied.”
“Isn’t this the biggest joke of the century? Did she lose her mind after her daughter’s death?”
“Who knows? Having Killian Reid as a husband is the greatest blessing I can ever think of. He’s super wealthy, handsome, and the most successful young man in the city. Kiara Storm must have hit her head somewhere to demand a divorce.”
“Without Killian, her family is nothing! So what if she lost a child? Won’t she have another one? Why’s she acting as if she’s the only woman who has ever lost a child to the cruel hands of death?”
“She lives in a big villa with servants at her beck and call. She travels in the most luxurious private jets, wears the best designer dresses, and even has a personal fashion designer and makeup artists! She doesn’t need to lift a finger, and Killian showers her with money! What an ingrate to ask for a divorce!”
Seeing the harsh comments, a bitter smile tugged at Kiara’s lips.
Would they react the same way if they knew what had actually happened, prompting her to ask for a divorce?
She scrolled.
The latest post was from her account. An apology post.
[I apologize for any misunderstanding caused by the video circulating online. I, Kiara Storm, have not asked my husband for a divorce. It was an impulsive statement caused by the grief of losing my daughter. Please disregard the rumors.]
Killian was behind it!
Kiara had no doubt that he’d hired someone to tamper with her account and create that post.
Shaking her head, a sad laughter tore from her throat.
Why would she care about the people’s comments? They could drag her on social media as much as they pleased, but her decision was already set.
Right now, she was more determined than ever to divorce.
The hours trickled by. Someone finally unlocked the door from the outside. When she stepped out of the room, she couldn’t see that person, though.
Kiara was too famished to stand properly. She limped downstairs and went to the kitchen to find something to eat.
However, she walked into Sophia wearing an apron. A medium bowl sat on the kitchen island in front of her, and she was holding a spoon as she turned a liquid inside the bowl.
Although Killian’s actions hurt her, Kiara no longer cared. She didn’t care about whoever he brought home. She didn’t care whether he had a thousand women outside or not. Her love for him had died from the moment she saw who he truly was. Ignoring Sophia’s presence, Kiara headed to the fridge and held the door open.“Levi loves strawberry-flavored ice-creams the most.” Sophia’s words floated to her ears. “I can’t believe Killian has already bought the recipe for us before we could even come.”Kiara knew what she was doing. She wasn’t dumb not to realize that Sophia intentionally said that to make her jealous. Besides, she’d bought and kept those recipes herself because her daughter loved strawberry-flavored ice-creams. Kiara would make one for Lily occasionally and never an out of the recipe.“Hmmm, I could have ordered the maids to buy the ice-cream from outside...” Sophia sighed. “But I’m concerned about Levi’s health. If something happens to him, Killian won’t let me rest. He’

The Next Morning. Kiara woke up to the heavy feeling on her chest. Her whole body ached as she sat on the bed, holding the bedsheet against her chest. Killian was long gone. The fact that the space beside her was no longer warm meant that he’d left before the dawn broke. He’d always been like that. Kiara had never, for once, woke up beside him ever since they got married. No matter how long the night was, he would be gone before she woke up. But his scent would always linger on her body, a glaring reminder of their shared intimacy.Shutting her eyes, Kiara resented herself right now.No matter how gentle or considerate Killian had been, she should never have given in. She shouldn’t have let him use her body the way he pleased.Well, last night was the last! She was never going to allow such a thing to happen between them again! Ever!“Good morning, Mrs. Reid. Breakfast is ready.” A maid came inside, struggling to hide the look of shock on her face. Everyone would have been shocke
Kiara froze, and everything around her came to a stop. Dazed, her eyes lingered on the trio, seemingly one of the most perfect family moments she’d always fantasized about. She’d imagined Killian, countless times, sitting their daughter on his lap. She’d imagined being present at the scene, laughing together at something funny their daughter said. But her fantasy never came true. Ever since Lily was born, Killian was rarely present, and he was mostly never present during her sick episodes. He’d never sat her on his lap before.Grief clutched at Kiara’s heart, snapping her back to the present. That was when her stepmother’s words settled in. Sophia… her stepsister? How could that be? If this lady was the same Sophia her stepmother had always mentioned to her, then Kiara didn’t know how to react. It’s no wonder she felt as if she’d seen her somewhere before. The little girl her stepmother had always shown her in photos looked exactly like her.But how… why?Kiara collected herself.
Strange how those words were coming from the same man who cheated on her.The same man who abandoned his child in illness. The man who didn't care a bit about his own family. “This is an opportunity for you to give your mistress’s son a proper surname. Aren't you happy?” She muttered.Who was he fooling? He knew what he wanted. And he knew she knew. Killian was silent for a few seconds. From the other end, only his heavy breathing resounded,A sign that he was holding back his rage. Surprisingly, when he spoke next, his tone was oddly strained. “Are you doing this because of Lily's death?”Like seriously? What woman divorced her husband simply because they'd lost a child? It didn't make any sense, did it? And he also knew that. He knew it wasn't the reason why she wanted to divorce. He knew well what prompted her decision. Was he going to continue ignoring what transpired at the hospital, pretending it didn't happen?Didn't he ever think that she deserved an explanation?“Never
Gasps echoed across the open field of the Villa. Kiara’s voice wasn't so low as she spoke, and the people standing nearby gave her astonishing looks. As for Killian, he stared at her as if she'd gone crazy. Raising an inquisitive brow, he grabbed her arm, his words even more insulting. “Have you lost it?”“Yes!” She snapped back, not backing down from his sharp gaze, not cowering from his intimidating presence. “I lost it when I agreed to marry you. Now my mind is clear.”“Quit it, Kiara-”“No!” She snatched her arm away. “Maybe you should quit pretending as if nothing happened!”Killian gave her a murderous look as if he'd killed her right there and then. Veins popping on his neck, his eyes darted across their surroundings, to the people gathering around. “Is this what you want?” He gritted out. Well, Kiara wanted something more. She wanted an apology and an explanation about what the hell was happening. Killian looked ready to do none of that. With one last glare in her dir
