Angela:

All the way here, I’d told myself I was doing the right thing. Now that I was outside Elena’s apartment, I wasn’t so sure.

She lived with her boyfriend, Brad. She’d offered to let me stay whenever things got difficult with Darren, but I’d never taken her up on it. Visiting was one thing. Asking them to make room for me when I couldn’t even say how long I’d be there was another.

I checked my phone, wondering whether I should call first. It was already late in the morning. Brad sometimes w

Well, so far we have baby Elena, but she is a baby, and we have Elena who we know. Friend Elena is the plot twist, hehe.

Yes to your question. So how many Elena’s do we have in this story? Angela should go back to Santo’s place.

  • Beta Santos    Chapter 13

Santos:I stared at Elena, wondering how many times I would have to tell her I was not interested in repeating the same conversation before she finally believed me.She stood inside my office with her arms crossed, blocking the door as though she intended to remain there until I agreed to listen. With a sigh, I placed my pen on the desk. “Elena, I have work to do.”“I understand that, Santos, but we need to talk.” She said, looking at me.“We already did.”“No, you became angry, said things you knew would hurt me, and told me to leave your apartment. That was not a conversation.” She snapped.I leaned back and studied her. There was a time when I would have admired her persistence. Elena was one of the few people who could disagree with me without turning it into a fight. She used to know when to push and when to give me space, and I had trusted her judgment more than I cared to admit.Lately, every conversation between us ended with one of us walking away hurt, and I was tired of it.

  • Beta Santos    Chapter 12

Angela:I kept watching the emergency room doors. Every time footsteps came close, I sat up, certain someone was coming to tell me El was okay. They passed, and I went back to staring. They'd taken her straight inside. When I tried to follow, a nurse caught my arm. “The doctors need room to work. You can wait out here, please.”A few hours ago, she'd been in my hotel room, complaining about Brad and telling me I was coming to breakfast whether I liked it or not. I'd argued. She'd laughed at me.I couldn't make that woman fit with the one the paramedics had lifted off the road. The engine kept coming back to me. That sudden roar. El's hand on my arm. I hadn't even understood why she was pushing me until I hit the ground. I pressed my palms over my ears, but that only made it easier to hear.“Please,” I whispered. “Please…”I didn't finish. I didn't know who I was asking, and I was afraid of saying the thing I wanted them to prevent.El had helped me leave Darren more than once. She'd f

  • Beta Santos    Chapter 11

Angela:Someone was knocking on my hotel door. I hadn’t even opened my eyes yet, and already I wanted them to go away.I lay still, staring at a water stain on the ceiling. Maybe if I waited long enough, they’d give up. The medication Santos had given me had taken the edge off the pain, but my head still throbbed. I felt as if I’d spent the whole night awake. The hotel was cheap, which was about the nicest thing I could say for it. When I’d arrived late last night, the receptionist had taken my money and handed over a key without asking questions. That had been enough.I had stayed here before.By now, I knew which rooms had dripping taps and which ones faced the noisy street. Every time things with Darren became unbearable, I ended up here. They probably should have offered me a loyalty card. The knocking came again. “Angela, it’s me, Elena.” She said, taking me off guard. “Please open the door. I know you’re in there.”I closed my eyes again. Of course, she found this place for me t

  • Beta Santos    Chapter 10

Santos:By the time I got back to the packhouse that evening, I knew I was in trouble with Nikolai.I’d told him I was staying out the night before. He hadn’t asked why. My personal life was mine, provided my work got done.Today, my work hadn’t got done.Elena had taken up most of my morning at the penthouse. Then there was Angela, the human waitress who insisted on leaving even though she could barely stand.Walking through the corridors, I remembered how she’d thanked me before leaving. The bastard who’d attacked her knew where she lived. She’d agreed it was dangerous, then insisted she would be fine. But I wasn’t spending my evening puzzling over a woman I’d met less than a day ago. Marco had confirmed she’d reached another residential building safely. He’d kept his distance and hadn’t seen Darren. She was safe. I should have been able to leave it at that.Folders waited on my desk, with a note reminding me that two reports needed urgent approval. I draped my jacket over the chair

Brad sometimes worked from home, and I had no idea if he was there. I didn’t want to interrupt anything, much less start an argument because I needed somewhere to stay.My head throbbed beneath the bandage.I’d planned to go home when I left Santos’s penthouse. But the closer I got to my neighborhood, the harder it was to ignore what he’d said.Darren knew where I lived. He knew my work schedule, where I bought groceries, and the routes I took home. He’d been in my apartment often enough to know which windows f

  • Beta Santos    Chapter 8

Santos:Elena stared at me for a long moment before shaking her head.“You’re going to regret treating me this way, Santos.”I didn’t respond, mostly because there was nothing left to say. I understood her reasons for rejecting my proposal, even if I didn’t agree with them, but that didn’t mean I had to pretend nothing had changed between us.She glanced at Angela, who sat quietly on the sofa, before turning back to me. “I hope you know what you’re doing.”“I do.” I said, crossing my arms over my chest as I did my best to ignore the clench that I felt.Elena scoffed. “Of course you do. You always believe you know what’s best for everyone.”I clenched my jaw. Elena never knew when to let an argument end. Usually, I might have argued back, but I’d barely slept and had no patience left. Whatever she felt about me, I wasn’t going to let her take it out on Angela again.“Goodbye, Santos,” she said coldly, and I nodded. She waited, perhaps expecting me to call her back or apologize.I did n
