Chapter 2

작가: Gummy
The snow swallowed me whole. Wave after wave of bone-deep cold swept through my body until I felt the frostbitten patches go numb, one by one.

A coworker finally spotted me and hauled me out. My mind had already started to fog over—one more gust of wind and I might have died right there.

I pounded my chest, coughing violently, and Susan's startled voice cut through the ringing in my ears.

"Naomi, what happened to you?" Her eyes went red, like she'd been the one wronged. "Was this really necessary, just because Carl wanted to take me to see the northern lights? If you didn't want to cover for me, you could've just said so. You didn't have to torture yourself over it."

I shot her a cold look. "Drop the act."

Carl stepped in front of her protectively. "Susan only wants what's best for you. Don't bite the hand that's trying to help."

Susan grabbed my arm again, studying me with a suspicious tilt of her head. "Naomi, is that... frostbite makeup? Or is it..."

"Or is it what?" Carl asked her gently, lowering his voice.

Susan gave an awkward little laugh and shook her head, playing coy. "Never mind, I must be seeing things. You're his wife—why would you have filthy diseases?"

Something shattered. Carl had crushed the bottle in his hand, his eyes locked on mine.

"filthy diseases?"

Before I could get a word out, Susan's gaze darted nervously between the two of us. "Captain, did I say something wrong? Naomi looks upset."

Then, without warning, she pinched me, hard. "Oh, I must have been mistaken—a rash from a filthy disease wouldn't cover an entire arm like that."

The pain was blinding. I flinched and shoved her hand away on instinct. Instantly, tears welled up in her eyes.

"I already covered for you, and this is how you repay me? You hit me?"

Carl rushed to check her over, then turned to me, his voice flat. "I already told Susan she could have the placement home. Don't take it out on her. Apologize."

I clenched my jaw and glared back at him, refusing to budge. "I didn't do anything wrong. She's the one who pinched—"

"Naomi," Susan cut in, eyes brimming, "it's fine if I don't go home. Take the placement instead. I don't want to be the reason you and the captain fall apart..."

Carl's expression didn't soften. "Since you won't apologize, you can make it up to her instead. That jealous streak of yours needs to be dealt with. You're covering Susan's shift underground for the next two weeks. Don't bother coming back up."

I'd already told him I had frostbite, and he was sending me forty below anyway. Shaking with fury, I turned on him.

"Are you really that desperate to kill me off just to make room for her?"

His throat worked, but no answer came. Behind him, Susan shot me a taunting glance before stepping in front of him again. "The captain's not like that, Naomi. Don't jump to conclusions."

Whatever hesitation had flickered across his face vanished. His eyes went cold. "When are you going to learn to be as understanding as Susan? Is jealousy and suspicion all you're capable of anymore?"

I could have had a better life than this. Instead, I'd spent ten years by his side in the Arctic for this. A blast of frozen air poured down my throat and swallowed whatever I might have said back.

"As your captain," he said coldly, "I'm ordering you to go underground for shift duty."

Then he wrapped an arm around Susan and walked off without a backward glance.

As the helicopter climbed into the sky, something in Carl hollowed out completely."Naomi, come back!" he screamed, his face twisted. "You can't leave with him! You're my wife—if you need treatment, I'm the one who should be taking you! Why would you rather turn to a stranger than stay by my side?"The question was never going to get an answer. He stood there, watching the helicopter shrink into the distance, as if Naomi had vanished from his life entirely. In ten years together, this was the first time she'd ever actually left him.Carl couldn't wrap his head around it. While he stood there frozen, Susan couldn't help pushing at him."Captain, hurry up and put in my request to go home. I've only got two weeks after this infection. I don't want to die. Please, save me."Carl's eyes drifted to her face, slowly coming into focus. "I remember now. This is all because of you."Susan blinked. "What do you mean, because of me?""Captain, just call Derek already!"Instead, Carl explod

Susan's expression shifted from fury to sheer panic."Then what do I do? What happens to someone who's infected?"Carl gulped. "If it's left untreated, you'd be dead within two weeks."Panicked, Susan grabbed Carl's arm without a thought for who was watching. "Captain, I want to go home. Can you get me on another flight? Ask Derek to come pick me up right away. I don't want to die! Please, save me!"Carl didn't even spare her a glance, his eyes catching on me instead. His jaw dropped. "Naomi! What happened to you? How did you age this much in three days? Your hair's gone white!"I looked at him, almost amused. "I guess the complications must have sped things up."He froze, then reached out and grabbed a few strands of my hair. "The complications did this? Why didn't you tell me?"I laughed, louder this time. "Was it that I didn't tell you, or that you just didn't believe me?"He choked on the words, his voice shaking. "You could've told me more than once! If you'd said it again

My body felt like it had been filled with lead, too heavy to move."Don't worry," I said. "I'll think about what's best for the base."Carl nodded, satisfied. "Good." His gaze drifted to Susan, and only then did it seem to occur to him to ask, "Why are you back?"She stiffened for a beat before wrapping herself around his arm, pouting. "Can't a girl miss you halfway through a flight?"Carl glanced at me and pulled his arm away, embarrassed. "Not now. Let's be serious."Before Susan could spin another excuse, I cut in with a cold smile. "Leaving your post without authorization means ten days on mining duty underground. That's the rule. You're not planning on playing favorites again, are you? Even if I let it slide, do you think anyone else would? Do you think the Institute would?"Susan's face fell. "Why should I have to go dig in a mine? What's wrong with just not wanting to leave?"At the mention of the Institute, Carl's fingers curled. He raised his voice to stop her. "Susan,

Arthur and I exchanged a glance, and I shook my head at Carl. "Nothing important."His face darkened anyway. "Naomi, are you still upset with me over giving Susan the rotation instead of you? I already explained this—we're a team, and I have to prioritize whoever's weaker. Just hold on a little longer. I'll make sure you go next time, all right?"I stared him down. "I don't have a next time to wait for.""Still with this act," he snapped, impatient.I choked back my frustration and changed course instead. "Forget it. I won't make this difficult for you. Do whatever you want.""Really?" He studied me for a long moment, and once he was satisfied I wasn't being sarcastic, his shoulders relaxed and the smile came back. "Good, I'm glad you're not upset with me. Eat up. We'll head back to base once you're done."I'd meant to refuse, but the words changed direction on their way out, and I took the porridge from him and drank it down instead. The healthier I stayed, the better the odds f

I searched everywhere for my phone before finally grabbing it off the nightstand and scrolling through my contacts. It took a while to dig up a number I hadn't dialed in ten years, but I finally found it and called, my hands shaking with emotion."Gabe, does the offer you made me ten years ago still stand? To join your research team?" I asked the moment he picked up. "I need to get home. Can you help me?"There was a long silence on the other end, like he hadn't expected the call at all. I couldn't wait him out. "Well? Say something!"Gabe Malone led a rival research team. He was talented in his own right and came from a wealthy, well-connected family, which was exactly why he'd been assigned to stay stationed back home instead of out in the field. He'd tried to recruit me more than once, even offering a generous salary despite knowing I was Carl's wife. But back then, I'd been foolish, blinded by love, and I'd turned him down flat to follow Carl out to the Arctic instead.Ten ye

"Naomi! Naomi, what's wrong?""Wake up! Don't scare me like this!"Voices clamored around me from every direction. Irritated, I snapped, "Shut up, stop talking!" and jolted awake at the sound of my own voice.Carl, who'd been glaring daggers at me not long ago, leaned in with obvious relief. "Naomi, you're awake. You scared the hell out of me. I really thought something had happened to you."Disoriented, I glanced around the room. Arthur explained, his eyes rimmed red, "This is the hospital closest to the base. You collapsed and scared everyone, so we brought you here."I tried to speak, and my throat felt like it had been sliced with a blade. "Where's the plane?"The relief drained from Arthur's face. He held his breath and shot Carl a furious look. "It already left. With Susan on it."A wave of disappointment washed over me, tangled up with something that felt almost like resignation, like I'd known it would go this way all along. "Oh," I said flatly, and let my head drop. "
