Chapter 1

I gritted through the stabbing pain and made it as far as the door before Carl Tillman called out, stopping me in my tracks.

"Wait."

My heart leapt. For one hopeful second, I thought he'd changed his mind about sending me home. Instead, without even looking up, he said, "Cover Susan's shift tonight. She wants to see the northern lights, so I'm taking her out to watch them."

The smile froze on my face. I turned back, certain I'd misheard him. "Carl, the injuries have already numbed half my body. I need to rest."

He paused, brow furrowing in irritation. "Still putting on that act? You dragged me through three days and nights during the avalanche. Don't tell me I don't know what kind of shape you're really in. Susan's naturally delicate. Don't go faking it just to copy her."

He took off his glasses and pressed his fingers to his temples like I'd given him a headache. "Naomi, you weren't always like this. When did you get so petty and jealous? Susan's the youngest one on the team, and a girl besides. Is it really so wrong that I look out for her a little more?"

Copying her? Jealous?

It hadn't occurred to me that risking my life to save him ten years ago would one day become proof that I was too healthy to need saving myself. I laughed bitterly.

Looking out for her. Right. He'd handed over his own glucose packet to Susan when my blood sugar crashed, and fobbed me off with a diet soda instead. He'd handed Susan his protective goggles during my snow blindness and told me to just tough it out.

Every single time, it came down to the same story: Susan Farrow was too delicate, and I was too healthy—healthy enough, apparently, that even my one chance to go home and save my life had to be handed over to her instead.

The pain was grinding through my nerves, and I didn't have it in me to argue anymore. Carl seemed to take my silence as defiance.

"Enough," he said, voice gone cold. "Quit walking around half-dead all the time. Who exactly are you putting on that face for?"

He crossed the room, grabbed my frostbitten arm, and scrubbed hard at the blue-black bruising.

"Susan showed us the other day how different shades of makeup can fake a bruise that looks completely real. I didn't think you'd stoop to copying her just to make a scene over me."

I hissed at the pain and yanked my arm back, and just like that, the urge to argue drained out of me.

"Carl, Institute regulations require every researcher to rotate home after three years. It's because the human body can't survive extended exposure to this kind of cold indefinitely. Did you not know that?"

His back stiffened for a second before he answered, voice mocking and impatient. "Other people are other people. You're you. How could their bodies possibly compare to yours? Susan especially—she's frail, she needs more time to recover at home, or she'll end up with permanent damage."

I swallowed hard, nails digging into my palms. "She's only been back three months!"

He froze. "So what if it's three months? She's weak and you're strong. Can't you just let her have this one?"

Let her have it. Let her have my rotation so she could go watch the northern lights while I covered her night shift. Let her have the newly issued cold-weather gear because she complained hers was too thin. Let her have my husband's concern too, apparently, since even that was too delicate for her to go without.

"Carl, I'm telling you the truth. I'm going to die out here."

He scoffed. "Susan called it exactly right—the second you found out I gave her the placement, you'd start threatening to die on me."

Something in me that had been holding on for years finally snapped. "Carl, are you my husband, or are you Susan's husband?"

He grabbed my arm in a bruising grip and dragged me out the door, and before I could even process what was happening, he shoved me down into the snow.

"You've completely lost it, going on and on like this. Sit out here and cool off."

As the helicopter climbed into the sky, something in Carl hollowed out completely."Naomi, come back!" he screamed, his face twisted. "You can't leave with him! You're my wife—if you need treatment, I'm the one who should be taking you! Why would you rather turn to a stranger than stay by my side?"The question was never going to get an answer. He stood there, watching the helicopter shrink into the distance, as if Naomi had vanished from his life entirely. In ten years together, this was the first time she'd ever actually left him.Carl couldn't wrap his head around it. While he stood there frozen, Susan couldn't help pushing at him."Captain, hurry up and put in my request to go home. I've only got two weeks after this infection. I don't want to die. Please, save me."Carl's eyes drifted to her face, slowly coming into focus. "I remember now. This is all because of you."Susan blinked. "What do you mean, because of me?""Captain, just call Derek already!"Instead, Carl explod

Susan's expression shifted from fury to sheer panic."Then what do I do? What happens to someone who's infected?"Carl gulped. "If it's left untreated, you'd be dead within two weeks."Panicked, Susan grabbed Carl's arm without a thought for who was watching. "Captain, I want to go home. Can you get me on another flight? Ask Derek to come pick me up right away. I don't want to die! Please, save me!"Carl didn't even spare her a glance, his eyes catching on me instead. His jaw dropped. "Naomi! What happened to you? How did you age this much in three days? Your hair's gone white!"I looked at him, almost amused. "I guess the complications must have sped things up."He froze, then reached out and grabbed a few strands of my hair. "The complications did this? Why didn't you tell me?"I laughed, louder this time. "Was it that I didn't tell you, or that you just didn't believe me?"He choked on the words, his voice shaking. "You could've told me more than once! If you'd said it again

My body felt like it had been filled with lead, too heavy to move."Don't worry," I said. "I'll think about what's best for the base."Carl nodded, satisfied. "Good." His gaze drifted to Susan, and only then did it seem to occur to him to ask, "Why are you back?"She stiffened for a beat before wrapping herself around his arm, pouting. "Can't a girl miss you halfway through a flight?"Carl glanced at me and pulled his arm away, embarrassed. "Not now. Let's be serious."Before Susan could spin another excuse, I cut in with a cold smile. "Leaving your post without authorization means ten days on mining duty underground. That's the rule. You're not planning on playing favorites again, are you? Even if I let it slide, do you think anyone else would? Do you think the Institute would?"Susan's face fell. "Why should I have to go dig in a mine? What's wrong with just not wanting to leave?"At the mention of the Institute, Carl's fingers curled. He raised his voice to stop her. "Susan,

Arthur and I exchanged a glance, and I shook my head at Carl. "Nothing important."His face darkened anyway. "Naomi, are you still upset with me over giving Susan the rotation instead of you? I already explained this—we're a team, and I have to prioritize whoever's weaker. Just hold on a little longer. I'll make sure you go next time, all right?"I stared him down. "I don't have a next time to wait for.""Still with this act," he snapped, impatient.I choked back my frustration and changed course instead. "Forget it. I won't make this difficult for you. Do whatever you want.""Really?" He studied me for a long moment, and once he was satisfied I wasn't being sarcastic, his shoulders relaxed and the smile came back. "Good, I'm glad you're not upset with me. Eat up. We'll head back to base once you're done."I'd meant to refuse, but the words changed direction on their way out, and I took the porridge from him and drank it down instead. The healthier I stayed, the better the odds f

I searched everywhere for my phone before finally grabbing it off the nightstand and scrolling through my contacts. It took a while to dig up a number I hadn't dialed in ten years, but I finally found it and called, my hands shaking with emotion."Gabe, does the offer you made me ten years ago still stand? To join your research team?" I asked the moment he picked up. "I need to get home. Can you help me?"There was a long silence on the other end, like he hadn't expected the call at all. I couldn't wait him out. "Well? Say something!"Gabe Malone led a rival research team. He was talented in his own right and came from a wealthy, well-connected family, which was exactly why he'd been assigned to stay stationed back home instead of out in the field. He'd tried to recruit me more than once, even offering a generous salary despite knowing I was Carl's wife. But back then, I'd been foolish, blinded by love, and I'd turned him down flat to follow Carl out to the Arctic instead.Ten ye

"Naomi! Naomi, what's wrong?""Wake up! Don't scare me like this!"Voices clamored around me from every direction. Irritated, I snapped, "Shut up, stop talking!" and jolted awake at the sound of my own voice.Carl, who'd been glaring daggers at me not long ago, leaned in with obvious relief. "Naomi, you're awake. You scared the hell out of me. I really thought something had happened to you."Disoriented, I glanced around the room. Arthur explained, his eyes rimmed red, "This is the hospital closest to the base. You collapsed and scared everyone, so we brought you here."I tried to speak, and my throat felt like it had been sliced with a blade. "Where's the plane?"The relief drained from Arthur's face. He held his breath and shot Carl a furious look. "It already left. With Susan on it."A wave of disappointment washed over me, tangled up with something that felt almost like resignation, like I'd known it would go this way all along. "Oh," I said flatly, and let my head drop. "
