Chapter 3

Author: Cher
A sudden, searing pain tore through my chest. The mate bond tore at me, howling, demanding answers. My face went pale instantly, and my body swayed beyond my control.

"Kath!" Derek caught me immediately, panic flooding his face. "What's wrong?"

Nearby guests glanced our way with concern.

"I..." I clutched my chest, gasping for air. "I'm fine..."

"I'm taking you to the hospital!" His voice shook.

"No." I steadied myself with effort. "It might be... the moonstone's energy. It's overwhelming me."

"The moonstone?"

"Yeah." I took a deep breath. "Its power is too strong. My body needs time to adjust."

Derek hesitated, then pulled me close. "Let's go home first. If you still feel bad, we're going to the hospital."

I looked at his worried expression and found it almost laughable. He was such a good actor. Finally, I managed a weak nod.

In the car, I leaned back against the seat with my eyes closed. The gemstone pendant burned hot beneath my clothes, desperately suppressing the mate bond's furious reaction.

"Derek," I spoke suddenly.

"Mm?"

"I heard an old legend once."

"What legend?" He held my hand.

"Alphas who betray their mates have their power taken back by the Moon Goddess."

Derek's hand stiffened around mine. The air in the car froze for several seconds. A moment later, he laughed. "Then I'm perfectly safe."

He leaned closer, looking seriously into my eyes. "Katherine, I swear I will never betray you.

"You're the most precious thing in my life." He kissed my forehead. "How could I ever betray you?"

I closed my eyes and let his lies wash over me. If I didn't know the truth, I'd probably be moved to tears.

Halfway home, Derek's private phone rang. Only the pack's inner circle and his closest contacts knew that number.

He glanced at the caller ID, and his expression changed completely.

"Stop the car," he said to our driver, David Knight.

The car pulled over to the side of the road. Derek turned to me, apology written all over his face. "Kath, there's an emergency at the border."

"What kind of emergency?"

"Rival pack invasion. I have to get there immediately." He sounded anxious. "Go home and rest. I'll be back as soon as I handle this."

"Should I go with you?"

"No, the border is dangerous." Derek opened the car door. "Get some rest. Wait for me to come back."

I got out of the car, and he quickly flagged down a cab for me. I then watched his car disappear into the night.

"Ma'am, where are we..." the driver asked.

"Follow that car." I cut him off.

"But the gentleman just said..."

"Follow it."

The driver hesitated for a second, then pressed the gas pedal. We tailed Derek's car from a distance. It didn't head toward the border. Instead, it drove to the opposite end of the city.

Finally, the car pulled into a private airfield.

"Ma'am, this is..." The driver sounded surprised.

"Stop here."

I got out and hid in the shadows of the parking lot. Derek's figure appeared on the tarmac. That was when I saw her.

Her blonde hair whipped in the night wind, and she had a body that turned heads. She wore a fitted flight attendant uniform, the skirt short enough to show off her long, slender legs. Her heels clicked crisply against the pavement.

It was the woman from the livestream, Sheila Thorne. She ran toward Derek with a smile and threw herself into his arms. He didn't push her away.

He wrapped his arm around her waist and kissed her. Under the moonlight, two figures clung tightly together. Then they walked toward the private jet together, climbed aboard, and entered the cockpit.

The cabin lights turned on. Through the window, I saw two silhouettes tangled together.

Their bodies intertwined. Her hands climbed up his neck, and he pressed her against the control panel. I turned away and stumbled back to the car.

"Ma'am, are you alright?" The driver looked at me through the rearview mirror.

I didn't answer.

"Ah." The driver sighed. "Ma'am, rich men like that are all the same. They have one at home, but keep one outside. You just... Just put up with it, and it shall pass. Making a fuss over this kind of thing isn't worth it."

I clutched the cold gemstone pendant at my chest. It felt like ice, just like my heart in this moment.

"No." My voice came out hoarse but absolutely firm. "I won't forgive this."

Derek bought a small cabin deep in the forest on the border of Fesmington. The place was humble, with only basic necessities. But from here, he could see Moon Haven Sanctuary in the valley below. That was the pup sanctuary I'd established. It had become well known.Derek became a forest ranger. His daily work consisted of patrolling the mountains, protecting the forest, and occasionally helping lost hikers. He cut his hair short and grew out his beard. He wore plain work clothes. There was no trace of the Alpha he'd once been. For five years, he never approached the sanctuary. He only watched from afar and gathered bits of news about me from passersby. And I never encountered him. I had no idea he was there. One afternoon, three rogues attacked my sanctuary. My guards and I fought desperately to hold them off, but we were clearly outmatched.Derek didn't hesitate. He instantly shifted to his wolf form and charged out. His strength far exceeded those rogues, and he subdued all thr

Derek woke up three days later. He saw Grand Elder Fenrir sitting beside the bed, his aged face filled with exhaustion and worry."Grandfather, why are you crying?" Derek struggled to sit up."I contacted Katherine," Grand Elder Fenrir said directly. "She refused to see you."Derek froze, then shook his head. "That's impossible. She's just upset. I'll go find her. I'll explain everything myself.""Derek!" Grand Elder Fenrir stopped him sharply. "Listen to what she said."He played the recorded call. My calm and resolute voice filled the hospital room. When Derek heard me say his feelings for me were just an Alpha's obsession, his face went completely pale."She's doing well," Grand Elder Fenrir said meaningfully. "She has her own life now. Let her go."Derek stayed silent for a long time. Then he suddenly threw off the blanket and stumbled toward the door."I have to find her! I need to tell her face-to-face! I need to tell her I've really changed!"However, his body was too w

In the great hall of the Blackwood manor, 80-year-old Grand Elder Fenrir sat in a high-backed chair. His imposing presence filled the entire room with an oppressive atmosphere."Derek." Grand Elder Fenrir's voice was aged but still commanding. "Kneel."Derek dropped to one knee without hesitation."Do you know what you've done wrong?""I..." Derek barely started speaking before Grand Elder Fenrir raised his hand to stop him."You defiled a sacred mate bond and brought shame to the entire pack. Your stupidity and weakness nearly cost us dearly." Grand Elder Fenrir stood, his voice growing harsher."Most importantly, you hurt Katherine. That sweet woman didn't deserve any of this."Derek lowered his head, not daring to argue."William," Grand Elder Fenrir called for the butler. "Bring the family whip."William brought over a black wooden box with trembling hands. Inside lay a whip soaked in silver water, gleaming coldly in the moonlight.Silver water was deadly poison to werewo

"Alpha Derek, you need to return home immediately!"At 3:00 am, Derek was jolted awake by an urgent phone ringing.Roy's voice carried pure panic. "Sheila leaked our core secrets to rival packs. The company's stock price has already crashed 60%!"Derek shot upright, sleep vanishing instantly. "What? Give me details!""She sold everything! Dark Night Consortium is launching a hostile takeover of our shares! The board is demanding you return immediately to handle the situation!"Derek gripped his phone. His veins bulged. He never imagined the exiled Sheila would resort to such insane revenge. That foolish woman had actually betrayed the entire pack to get back at him."Book the earliest flight." "50 thousand dollars. This is the phone number Ms. Vance used when she checked into the hotel."A hotel staff member slipped a note into Derek's hand, greed glinting in his eyes.Derek accepted the note with trembling hands and immediately dialed the number. But all he heard was a cold, automated voice. "The number you have dialed has been disconnected."Derek refused to give up. He called over and over, but got the same result every time. In his desperation, he thought of another approach.Derek began posting an "Alpha's Confession Diary" online every day."Day One. Katherine, I know you can see this. Every day I regret not cherishing you.""Day Ten. I've dealt with Sheila. She'll never appear again. I want you to know how much I hate myself."These confession entries caused a huge reaction online. "Mr. Blackwood, we've screened over ten thousand leads, but most are false information."The private investigator reported the latest developments wearily. The desk was piled high with eyewitness reports from around the world.Derek looked pale, his eyes bloodshot. He appeared not to have slept in days."Keep looking!" His voice came out hoarse. "Increase the bounty. Make it 100 million dollars!""Mr. Blackwood, at this rate your health...""I said keep looking!" Derek roared and grabbed a stack of documents from the desk, hurling them at the wall.Just then, Roy rushed in."Mr. Blackwood, important news!" he said breathlessly. "Someone spotted Ms. Vance at an old church in Arcanum's Bellin City!"Derek shot up from his chair instantly. Hope reignited in his eyes."Are you sure?""They already sent photos. It's definitely Ms. Vance!"Derek immediately checked the photos. In the image, I wore a simple beige trench coat and stood in front of an ancient Gothic church."Prepare
