It’s before Jade drugged me when Cole wanted the divorce.

Before he believed Lucy wasn’t his long enough for Jade to get me where she wanted me.

Before they took Lucy away from me and used her for spare parts.

There’s a resolve in my brain. This is my second chance. I don’t know why I got one but I’m not going to waste it. I’m going to make that bitch pay. I’m going to take Cole’s world apart brick by brick.

I stand there with Lucy heavy against me and the memory of hospital lights and a small body going still in my arms presses through everything like a fact I can’t deny.

I shouldn’t be standing here. I shouldn’t be watching her play.

My head is light enough to make me dizzy. I breathe shallow, counting in and out until the world steadies so I can think straight.

There’s no time to sit with the miracle.

There’s only time to act. I grab Lucy’s bag, jam my feet into shoes, shove a jacket on, pick up Lucy and leave.

It’s not like Cole will miss me. He won’t be home anyway.
